A Long Overdue Farm News 03-30-24

It's been a while since I've had a general update and I basically have no excuse other than March has been a bit nuts.  Mr. Barb has had some health issues which we've had to get to the bottom of (nothing major thank goodness), my stupid uncle (for anyone that remembers that saga) sued my mom, plus March is the year anniversary of when we lost Cass and it's bringing back all kinds of memories about what we went through this time last year.  However, Apollo and Zeke are fine, Zeke is growing like a weed, and we now have more warmer days than cold (although they still exist) so I'll take all that as a win.

We've not had much luck with watching a lot of movies but I am hoping to make time for "Imaginary" this weekend.  We watched on called "Prey" which stars Ryan Phillip which was pretty good and I would highly recommend and a stupid horror film called "Night Shift" which does NOT involved vampires and which I do not recommend.  I am thoroughly enjoying "The Ones Who Live" on AMC though (aka - Walking Dead Rick and Michonne spin-off) but the last episode of the season airs this Sunday.

I have managed to do quite a bit of reading and am not TOO far behind on reviews.  I'm trying to figure out my April reading plans and honestly don't know where to start so that sounds like an April problem right now.  This weekend I hope to finish up at last one of my current reads.  I am about 45% into A Grave Robbery and I'm a tad disappointed I am not liking it more as it is one of my favorite series.  I also want to get a jump on Bless Your Heart which releases in April.

I have also acquired some really good books lately and am excited for all of them.

The Midnight Club: Margot Harrison
The Body Next Door: Maia Chance
The Hitchcock Hotel: Stephanie Wrobel
Nightmare of a Trip: Maureen Kilmer

I hope everyone that celebrates is having a great Easter weekend and as always, thanks for visiting Booker T's Farm!

Now THAT Was Interesting!

TITLE: That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf (Mead Mishaps #2)
AUTHOR: Kimberly Lemming
PUBLISHER: Orbit
PUBLISHING DATE: February 6, 2024
PAGES: 288
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS: Cheesemaker Brie has the world’s worst luck in love, which is how she ends up falling for a lactose intolerant werewolf, in this raunchy, laugh-out-loud rom-com fantasy by the genre’s freshest new voice, Kimberly Lemming.
Brie’s never been particularly coordinated…or lucky. Who else would accidentally throw a drink at someone’s head only to miss entirely and hit a stranger behind them? And who else would have that stranger fall madly in love with them because it turns out that the drink she threw was a love potion? Yeah, probably just Brie.…
Running her cheese business and dealing with a pirate ship full of demons that just moved into town was hard enough. Now on top of it, she has to convince a werewolf that she’s not really his fated mate. Though even she’s got to admit…having a gorgeous man show up and do all her chores while telling her she’s beautiful isn’t the worst thing to happen to a girl.

MY THOUGHTS: I was very excited to dive into this book after recently reading the first one so when my hold arrived on Libby, I grabbed it right away.  And I'm glad I did because this one so much fun.

This book takes place several months after the first one.  Cinnamon and her new demon husband have moved back to Cinnamon's hometown and brought their merry group of misfit monsters and demons with them. Brie is Cinnamon's best friend who is actively being pursued by the town jerk.  He obtains a love potion and when he attempts to use it on Brie, everything backfires and she manages to throw it away from her but hits Felix, a werewolf. Felix believes that Brie is his fated mate and imprints on her, but Brie feels it is just the influence of the potion.  She is afraid of falling for him and getting her heart broke when the potion wears off.

While that is the main jest of the take, there's still plenty of other action going on.  Young women are mysteriously disappearing and Felix, Cin, Brie and Fallon team up to figure out what is going on.  A weird cult is trying to take over where the last cruel princess took over, but can the gang stop them in time?

This book is best not taken too seriously.  I love all the characters, humans, demons and monsters alike, and it's a fun universe to lose yourself in for a while.  I will say this installment was a bit steamier than the first one but as stuff like that doesn't bother me, I didn't mind. Felix is so darn cute that I really wanted things to work out between him and Brie.

If you love cozy fantasy books with a heavy helping of spice, then this is DEFINITELY the book for you.  I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the third one from Libby and can't wait to see what the author has in store for our next set of main characters.

FROM GOODREADS: I was mostly a Good Dog until they sold me out to animal control, okay?

But if it’s a choice between Oz, with its creepy little singing dudes, and being behind bars in gray old Kansas, I’ll choose the place where animals talk and run the show for now, thanks.

It’s not my fault that the kid is stuck here too, or that she stumbled into a tug-of-war over a pair of slippers that don’t even taste good. Now one witch in good eyeliner calls her pretty and we’re off on a quest? Teenagers.

I try to tell her she’s falling in with the wrong crowd when she befriends a freaking hedge wizard made of straw, that blue jay with revolutionary aspirations, and the walking tin can. Still, I’m not one to judge when there’s the small matter of a coup in the Forest Kingdom....

Look, something really stinks in Oz, and this Wizard guy and the witches positively reek of it. As usual, it’s going to be up to a sensible little dog to do a big dog’s job and get to the bottom of it.

And trust me: Little dogs can get away with anything.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  Anyone who knows me knows this sounds perfect for me!  In fact, I have already preordered a copy!

WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK???

Can't Believe It's Been a Year

A year ago today, I was forced to say goodbye to my best friend and soul pup, Cassius Gray.  His illness kind of blindsided us, but in retrospect, it explained a lot about his behavior his last 6 months.  I love all my dogs, and consider them my children, but I won't lie, Cassius and I had a special connection.  I was definitely his person and not a day goes by that I don't wish he was still here.  So, I wanted to honor him today by sharing some things I want him to know.

1. Sometimes Mommy and Daddy still cry when thinking about you.  However, they are tears of love and joy and it usually happens when we are discussing funny things you did like the night you got mad because we weren't paying attention and threw a tennis ball at the front door - HARD.

2. We forgive you for the few episodes when you went after your brother Apollo and ended up biting us.  You were sick and didn't know how to tell us and we weren't smart enough to catch on soon enough.  You felt threatened by Apollo but know he never could or would take your place.

3. We fondly call the bite scars special Cassius tattoos.

4. Every time I see a bird in the backyard, I know you're visiting us.  I remember how you used to birdwatch and "made" us fill the feeders each year so more would come around.  We always said you wanted to fly and I'm sure you are soaring high and having so much fun now in Heaven.

5.  Apollo mourned for months after you left.  We rarely saw him smile which told us how much he loved you and needed you.

6.  This leads to the next thing, we finally broke down and got Apollo a baby brother.  His name is Ezekiel but we call him Zeke/Zekey.  He is an absolute nut, but he has helped Apollo so much.

7. When Zekey crawls on my lap and looks up at me with his deep brown eyes, I can see the love in them just like I could yours.  Makes me think there is a part of you in there somewhere.

8.  Zekey loves playing with all the tennis balls you left him and enjoys rolling them under the couch again and again and again so Mom and Dad have to fetch them.

9. Apollo took over your "apartment" in the bedroom.  I'm sure he still feels your presence there.

10.  And finally, we love as much now as we did then and know we will see you again someday.

Love - Mommy, Daddy, Apollo and Zekey

2 Bloggers 1 Series - The Unseen (Krewe of Hunters #5)

This month Stormi and I decided to pick up another book in the Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham.  For those keeping track, there are three main series lines featuring various incantations of the Krewe and Stormi and I have started all three.  Luckily, they each stand pretty independently, but I need to figure out a good tracking system because I'm starting to confuse myself.  So read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Stormi's at Storm Reads and see hers!

TITLE: The Unseen (Krewe of Hunters #5)
AUTHOR: Heather Graham
PUBLISHER: MIRA
PUBLISHING DATE: March 27, 2012
PAGES: 311
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS: 1800s. San Antonio, Texas: In room 207 at the Longhorn Saloon, in the long shadow of the Alamo itself, a woman renowned for her beauty was brutally murdered. Her killer was never found.
One year ago: In that same historic room, another woman vanished without a trace. Her blood was everywhere...but her body was never recovered.
Now: In the last month, San Antonio has become a dumping ground for battered bodies. All young women, many of them long missing, almost all forgotten. Until now.
Texas Ranger Logan Raintree cannot sit by and let his city’s most vulnerable citizens be slain. So when he is approached to lead a brand-new group of elite paranormal investigators working the case, he has no choice but to accept the challenge. And with it, his powerful ability to commune with the dead.
Among Logan’s new team is Kelsey O’Brien, a U.S. marshal known for her razor-sharp intuition and a toughness that belies her delicate exterior. Kelsey has been waiting all her life to work with someone who can understand her ability to “see” the past unfolding in the present. Now she has her chance.
Together, Kelsey and Logan follow their instincts to the Alamo and to the newly reopened Longhorn, which once tempted heroes with drink, cards and women. If the spirits of those long-dead Texans are really appearing to the victims before their deaths, only Kelsey and Logan have the skills to find out why. And if something more earthly is menacing the city’s oldest, darkest corners, only they can stop it—before more innocent women join the company of San Antonio’s restless ghosts....

MY THOUGHTS: I continue to really enjoy this series.  I had a minor setback with reading the first one of the connected Harrison Investigative series and really disliking the male MC, so I'm thrilled to say I love Logan Raintree.

This book takes place in Texas and is centered around historic Alamo and a missing diamond worth millions.  The reader gets a present-day tale as well as flashbacks to the historical incidents and I loved both timelines.  In addition, this book starts a new arc forming a spin-off Krewe team, so it was nice meeting all the new players and seeing how they come together.  Finally, I have to mention the ghosts in this one.  I really loved the Alamo ghost and I believe this book really relied on supernatural entities more than some in the past and it made it that much more enjoyable for me.

As I mentioned this before, this series is somewhat formulaic.  However, each book has its own tale to tell, and the romance is present but doesn't interfere with the action of the book, so everything is done with good balance.  I find them to be quick reads and am already looking forward to the next one.

Special Guest Interview - Lucius Valiant

1. I am so excited to welcome Lucius to Booker T's Farm. Can you share a little bit about yourself and your Thornhill Vampire Chronicles series?

I'm one of those authors who spent over a decade working on my debut novel. In retrospect, I'll put that down to the sheer terror of putting something creative that comes from your soul out into the world where others can judge it. In the end, the idea of not ever finishing my book and not putting it out into the world became much more frightening than the prospect of actually doing it. I'm relieved that I made it past that hurdle, because I've gone on to write two more novels in the series and I'm currently working on the fourth installment.

The Thornhill Vampire Chronicles is a dark fantasy series set in the UK where I live. It draws on a lot of well-known themes and uses set pieces that readers of horror and gothic literature will be familiar with - think vampires, haunted mansions, moldering crypts, a famous Victorian cemetery, dark family secrets. But the series is mostly set in the present, and the main protagonist, Harlan Thornhill, is a Gen Z Millennial cusp vampire hunter.

When I wrote book two, I made the main antagonist from book one the narrator. I've had quite a few readers message me (or mention in their reviews) after reading it that they really didn't want to like Gabriel Graves, but book two made them capitulate. That made me very happy, because I like surprising the readers by turning the tables on them. I like surprising myself when I write, and I don't believe that the main character has to be a nice guy to be likable.

Because I prefer it when characters aren't easily classifiable as good or evil, there are no purely good or purely bad characters in the series. Some characters are just a little deeper into the dark end of the moral spectrum than others.

2. Dark Roots features quite a few supernatural beings/characters (and one in particular I didn't see coming). What about the supernatural interests you so much?

I love this question, and I feel like it deserves a good, meaty answer. Unfortunately, I don't quite know why I love the supernatural so much, but I can tell you that I always have. I think it's something about the feeling of possibility and freedom that it gives you as an author.

I've got a folder on my Google Drive full of ideas I've accumulated for books I want to write in the future. All of them have the supernatural as an element. It's just what the Muse has got for me. Every time the Muse shows up with a new bag of inspiration, I know there is going to be something supernatural in there.

3. If you yourself could be a supernatural being (or maybe you really are), what would it be and why?

A vampire, beyond a doubt. I've always felt very connected to that archetype. I think that's why it's easier and more fun for me to write from the perspective of a vampire than, say, a regular guy who lives down the street and works in a bank. I just find vampires much more relatable.

4. Who are some of your writing influences?

I'm very influenced by classics of Gothic Horror like Dracula by Bram Stoker, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. If we're talking themes and subject matter, these three books alone go a long way towards explaining what fuels my creative imagination as an author.

My more contemporary influences include Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, Stephen King and Haruki Murakami.

5. Can you share three of your favorite books or authors? (Mine happen to be Stephen King - The Shining in particular, The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, and What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson).

Oh, this is a tough question. There are so many wonderful, wonderful books and authors out there that I could give the title of ‘favorite.’ Since I've already name-dropped my favorite author influences, I'll give you the titles of three of my favorite books and the names of the authors who wrote them.

The Witching Hour by Anne Rice, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami and Misery by Stephen King. The latter is particularly hard-hitting if you read it while recovering from surgery in hospital like I did.

6. Currently, there are 3 books in the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles. Are there plans for more and if so, do you have a definite plan for ending it after a certain installment?

When I started writing Dark Roots, the first book in the series, I had no idea that there were going to be others. But with each book I've written so far, I keep pulling up more new threads that have to be pursued. And I'm working with such a big cast of characters with overlapping histories at this point that I really can't say for sure where this is all going to go. I think there are going to be six books in the series in total, but that's not a promise. Writing this series feels like walking deeper and deeper into a haunted mansion that keeps growing around me as I move along. And I keep discovering new rooms, sudden trapdoors and secret passageways.

7.  Anything else you would like to add?

I’d like to say thank you so much for interviewing me. Trying to make my way as a new author, every piece of encouragement, every comment or message that a reader sends me, and every invitation like this is a huge encouragement. I don’t take any of it for granted, and I’ve decided that even if and when I grow to have a much bigger readership, I never will.

A Great Start to a New Series!

TITLE: Dark Roots (The Thornhill Vampire Chronicles #1)
AUTHOR: Lucius Valiant
PUBLISHER: Thornhill Publishing
PUBLISHING DATE: October 28, 2023
PAGES: 262
SOURCE: Author

FROM GOODREADS: Harlan Thorne is a professional Hunter. When a solicitor approaches him on behalf of a client facing an unspecified vampire problem, he cannot turn away. But from the moment he steps into the imposing Thornhill Mansion, perched above the hallowed grounds of Highgate Cemetery West, reality itself begins to warp. Harlan soon finds himself swept up in a cyclone of long-held secrets, ancient vendettas, ghostly whispers, and a looming resurrection that demands blood - in abundance. As Harlan unravels the mysteries of Thornhill Mansion and its inhabitants, he unearths buried truths about his own lineage. The deeper he digs, the more he his fate is hopelessly entangled with the Thornhills’.
“Dark Roots" is the debut novel from Danish-British author Lucius Valiant. Sumptuously dark with a wry twist of humor, it’s the first spine-tingling installment in the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles.

MY THOUGHTS: Within the past six months or so, my love of all things vampire has really resurfaced.  For years I was obsessed with them, with my fascination of them starting the first time I watched Lost Boys. They sort of fell by the wayside, but it seems to me vampires are becoming popular again (I blame Twilight for their demise but don't get me started on that).  The only supernatural creature that comes close to vamps for me are werewolves and I'm so lucky this series contains both, making it the complete package.

Harlan is a professional hunter for the Van Helsing Society who has recently been suspended due to some trumped up allegations because the acting director of his agency has an ax to grind.  He ends up being approached to go investigate a vampire problem at the mysterious Thornhill mansion.  Harlan's parents were killed by vamps when he was young and he had always had issues with them but for some reason, he is drawn to take the job and check out the mansion. There Harlan meets Sebastian, a photographer also invited to the mansion who hopes to feature the Gothic location in a new book.  What unfolds makes Harlan and Sebastian question everything they know about their lives thus far and opens doors to a past they never suspected.

I loved Harlen.  He is a complicated character but very likable. He has a great relationship with Eli, the man who raised him, who also transforms into a werewolf several nights a month. Thus, Harlen has always maintained an open mind. He also has a sense of humor and wit which I really appreciate in my characters.  However, for some reason, Sebastian stole the show for me, perhaps because he reminded me of one of my best college pals.  The book did a great job of introducing other characters and creatures only making me more excited for the installments to come, while weaving in a mystery complete with action and adventure.

If you are looking for a Gothic tale and love supernatural stories, then I really suggest you pick this book up.  So far there are three books already released in the series and the author is working on the fourth.  I am excited to see what lies for the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles.

MY RATING: 4 PAWS

Feed Your TBR - I'll Be Waiting

OCTOBER 1, 2024

FROM GOODREADS: Nicola Laughton never expected to see adulthood, being diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as a child. Then medical advances let her live into her thirties and she met Anton, who taught her to dream of a future… together. Months after they married, Anton died in a horrible car, but lived long enough to utter five words to her, “I’ll be waiting for you.”

That final private moment became public when someone from the crash scene took it to the press—the terminally ill woman holding her dying husband as he promised to wait for her on the other side. Worse, that person claimed it wasn’t Anton who said the words but his ghost, hovering over his body.

Since their story went public, Nicola has been hounded by spiritualists promising closure. In the hopes of stopping her downward spiral, friends and family find a reputable medium—a professor of parapsychology. For the séance, they rent the Lake Erie beach house that Anton’s family once owned.

The medium barely has time to begin his work before things start happening. Locked doors mysteriously open. Clouds of insects engulf the house. Nicola hears footsteps and voices and the creak of an old dumbwaiter…in an empty shaft. Throughout it all she’s haunted by nightmares of her past. Because, unbeknownst to the others, this isn’t her first time contacting the dead. And Nicola isn’t her real name.

That’s when she finds the first body....

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  I have never read an Armstrong book I haven't enjoyed, and I've read a lot.  However, I still have a huge backlist and she keeps coming out with multiple news book every year.  Seriously, does this woman sleep????

Still Lovin' It!

TITLE: White Trash Zombie Apocalypse (White Trash Zombie #3)
AUTHOR: Diana Rowland
PUBLISHER: DAW
PUBLISHING DATE: July 2, 2013
PAGES: 320
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS: Our favorite white trash zombie, Angel Crawford, has enough problems of her own, what with dealing with her alcoholic, deadbeat dad, issues with her not-quite boyfriend, the zombie mafia, industrial espionage and evil corporations. Oh, and it’s raining, and won’t let up.
But things get even crazier when a zombie movie starts filming in town, and Angel begins to suspect that it’s not just the plot of the movie that's rotten. Soon she's fighting her way through mud, blood, bullets and intrigue, even as zombies, both real and fake, prowl the streets.
Angel’s been through more than her share of crap, but this time she’s in way over her head. She’ll need plenty of brainpower to fit all the pieces—and body parts—together in order to save herself, her town, and quite possibly the human race.

MY THOUGHTS:  I am so glad I decided to join this 6-month series readalong because I'm having so much fun with these books and so far, have loved them all.  My only regret is that the discussions are on Sunday afternoons once a month which is usually when my mom visits us.  However, I look forward to visiting Angel and her gang once a month and if I didn't have other reading obligations, would have picked #4 up right after finishing this one.

Once again Angel finds herself in deeper and deeper with the whole "there are zombies living in town" thing.  Her relationship with her cop/boyfriend/zombie Daddy has slowed down but is still going strong, she is still living with her dad and trying to rebuild their tenuous relationship, and people are still trying to use her for experiments.  Oh, and she is also having confusing maternal instincts for Phillip, who she was forced to turn, even though it seems as if he is trying to kill her.

It's hard to go into much without giving a lot away but I can safely say this series continues to be action-packed and a lot of fun.  I love Angel and especially appreciated the growth and development of the relationship with her father.  I anticipated 2024 might be the year of my return to urban fantasy and so far, so good!

This Was a Disappointment I Didn't Expect

TITLE: Episode Thirteen
AUTHOR: Craig DiLouie
PUBLISHER: Redhook
PUBLISHING DATE: January 24, 2023
PAGES: 437
SOURCE: Own

FROM GOODREADS: Fade to Black is the newest hit ghost hunting reality TV show. Led by husband-and-wife team Matt and Claire Kirklin, it delivers weekly hauntings investigated by a dedicated team of ghost hunting experts. Episode Thirteen takes them to every ghost hunter's holy grail: the Paranormal Research Foundation. This brooding, derelict mansion holds secrets and clues about bizarre experiments that took place there in the 1970s. It's also famously haunted, and the team hopes their scientific techniques and high-tech gear will prove it. But as the house begins to reveal itself to them, proof of an afterlife might not be everything Matt dreamed of. A story told in broken pieces, in tapes, journals, and correspondence, this is the story of Episode Thirteen -- and how everything went terribly, horribly wrong.

MY THOUGHTS: I've wanted to read this book ever since I first heard of it and had a thrifted copy on my shelves for over 8-9 months. I was almost sure I would love it because one, it's horror and two, it's told in epistolary format.  Man was I ever wrong.

The book features a Matt and Claire who are married and host the first series of a ghost hunting TV show.  The season is coming to an end, and they hope to go out with a big bang and score an infamous site for their final episode of the year.  While Matt loves what he does, Claire is actually a scientist who spends all her time debunking paranormal activity when she would rather make her mark in the scientific world.  When the team actually starts to experience things they cannot explain, things start to shift.  Claire becomes obsessed with the house and its history, some crew members start acting odd, and one is running scared.  Can they secure a second season and if they do, will anyone still be around to film it?

I really disliked most of these characters but will admit it was fun cheering some of them on to their demise.  Claire was tolerable until she became weirdly obsessed with house and for some reason, I also liked the cameraman.  Kevin, a retired police officer in my opinion was a stereotype off a lot of bad things you hear about cops, and Jessica, the one real actress in the show, was ok.  Actually, not sure her name is actually Jessica.  I guess a found-footage book just didn't work for me like movies of this type usually do.

If you love horror, ghost hunting and creepy settings, this book will probably work for you.  Most of our book club liked it, I just wasn't one of them, which really stinks because I thought for sure it would be a winner.  I still have a few books by this author I want to read, and this one didn't put me off from trying additional titles in the future. Hopefully if you pick it up, it will work for you.

I Felt Like I Was Sinking on the High Seas!

TITLE: Hunt on Dark Waters (Crimson Sails #1))
AUTHOR: Katee Robert
PUBLISHER: Berkley
PUBLISHING DATE: November 7, 2023
PAGES: 320
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS: Evelyn is a witch with a perfect storm of impulses: terrible taste in bed partners, sticky fingers, and a lust for danger. After she steals from her vampire ex and falls through a portal to another realm, she’s fished out of the waters by a band of seafarers and their telekinetic captain. She’s immediately given a choice—join their group or die.
Bowen has no memory of his life before he became one of the Cŵn Annwn. He and his pirate crew are bound by vow to patrol through Threshold, the magical sea in between realms, keeping the portals to other worlds safe. When he rescues Evelyn, he doesn’t expect to be attracted to the unflappably brassy pickpocket. The longer he spends in her presence, the more he begins to question if his heart is the next thing she’ll steal.
But as tension heats up between Bowen and Evelyn, danger escalates as well. Because Evelyn has no intention of keeping her vows to the Cŵn Annwn, and if she betrays the crew, both she and Bowen will pay the ultimate price....

MY THOUGHTS: This freaking book took me over two months to read.  For a 320-page book that isn't non-fiction, that's unheard of in my world.  But hear me out, I don't think it was the book's fault.  It was a physical loan from the library and one that I picked up here and there between other things. I'd read a chapter or two, sit it down and move on.  This past week it was making me feel slumpy, so I made a commitment to finish and I'm glad to report the overall result was really interesting read that definitely has me interested in the next installment.

Evelyn is a witch who is having a fling, for lack of better words, with a powerful vampire. Things go wrong one evening and to escape Lizzie's mother, Evelyn jumps through a portal and lands in Threshold, a completely different land.  The only problem is she took many of her lover's precious and expensive jewelry with her.  Evelyn lands in the middle of the sea and is rescued by Bowen, captain of the Crimson Hag.  Sparks fly and soon Evelyn has Bowen questioning his purpose in Threshold, which centers around killing mythical and magical creatures on demand without question.  Evelyn is trying to get back to her world while managing to stay alive.  Can she do so without leaving her heart behind and what will happen when Lizzie catches up with her.

I really liked Evelyn's character.  She is pretty carefree and reckless, but she has heart and spunk.  She is also quite comical at times and a expert thief, which sometimes gets her into a lot of trouble.  Bowen is don't-ask-questions kind of guy who takes orders from the
Cŵn Annwn without thinking of the overall consequences or why he is being asked to do certain things.  Evelyn makes him start questioning this which in my mind was a good thing.

This book has some fairly spicy scenes, and it was definitely interesting to see magic infused into them.  I've read another book by the author, so I knew what to expect but I think her scenes throw some people off. There are tons of pirate action throughout and never a dull moment which really makes me question why it took me so long to finish. Basically, that alone took away one rating paw but overall, I loved Hunt on Dark Waters and am looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Feed Your TBR - Long Live Evil (Time of Iron #1)

July 30, 2024

FROM GOODREADS: When her whole life collapsed, Rae still had books. Dying, she seizes a second chance at living: a magical bargain that lets her enter the world of her favorite fantasy series.

She wakes in a castle on the edge of a hellish chasm, in a kingdom on the brink of war. Home to dangerous monsters, scheming courtiers and her favorite fictional character: the Once and Forever Emperor. He’s impossibly alluring, as only fiction can be. And in this fantasy world, she discovers she's not the heroine, but the villainess in the Emperor's tale.

So be it. The wicked are better dressed, with better one-liners, even if they're doomed to bad ends. She assembles the wildly disparate villains of the story under her evil leadership, plotting to change their fate. But as the body count rises and the Emperor's fury increases, it seems Rae and her allies may not survive to see the final page.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  I love a good villain and the idea of entering a new world through a book intrigues the book lover in me.

WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK????

Who Knew I'd Enjoy a Golf-Centered Book

TITLE: Fangirl Down (Big Shots #1)
AUTHOR: Tessa Bailey
PUBLISHER: Avon
PUBLISHING DATE: February 13, 2024
PAGES: 380
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS: Wells Whitaker was once golf’s hottest rising star, but lately, all he has to show for his “promising” career is a killer hangover, a collection of broken clubs, and one remaining supporter. No matter how bad he plays, the beautiful, sunny redhead is always on the sidelines. He curses, she cheers. He scowls, she smiles. But when Wells quits in a blaze of glory and his fangirl finally goes home, he knows he made the greatest mistake of his life.
Josephine Doyle believed in the gorgeous, grumpy golfer, even when he didn’t believe in himself. Yet after he throws in the towel, she begins to wonder if her faith was misplaced. Then a determined Wells shows up at her door with a wild proposal: be his new caddy, help him turn his game around, and split the prize money. And considering Josephine’s professional and personal life is in shambles, she could really use the cash…
As they travel together, spending days on the green and nights in neighboring hotel rooms, sparks fly. Before long, they’re inseparable, Wells starts winning again, and Josephine is surprised to find a sweet, thoughtful guy underneath his gruff, growly exterior. This hot man wants to brush her hair, feed her snacks, and take bubble baths together? Is this real life? But Wells is technically her boss and an athlete falling for his fangirl would be ridiculous… right?

MY THOUGHTS: I absolutely could not get into the first 50 or so pages of this book so imagine my surprise when I ended up loving it.  This is exactly why I have such a hard time DNF'ing a book.  I considered it with this one and if I had, I would have missed out on something I really loved!

Joey has always worked at her family's golf pro shop in Florida and secretly has dreams to amp it up to being the best in the state.  She lives, eats and breathes golf and loves following her favorite golfer, Wells Whittaker. Wells is the resident bad boy of golf and his negative attitude is quickly tanking his career.  He finds his number one fan extremely irritating until a hurricane ruins her shop and she lands in a predicament that only he may be able to help her with.  Together they team up and Joey becomes Wells' caddie.  She wants to help him revitalize his career and save her shop, as well as her health insurance.  Wells doesn't know what he wants from Joey, but he soon finds out it's much more to her than her annoying behavior.

While I thought Wells was a grade-A jerk, he quickly grew on me once the author helped me understand what made him tick.  And overall, this is a grumpy sunshine trope at its best.  I think what helped sell me on this book is how the author handled Joey's Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis.  The book really showed everything Joey did to manage her health and some of the decisions she had to make regarding it on a day-to-day basis.  Add in Wells' response to finding out Joey's diagnosis and everything just seemed to click. Of course, I also loved the banter between the two.

This book contains quite a bit of spice so if that isn't your thing, then you might bow out of this one.  Of course, if you've read Bailey's past books, you probably know what to expect.  I also think Wells comes across pretty cavemanish at times which might make some people hesitant but rest assured, it all plays out in the end. I would recommend this to any rom-com lovers as well as the tried-and-true Bailey fans.  Book #2 features hockey but I sure hope there is a football one planned somewhere because golf isn't the sport for me, but I loved this one, nonetheless.

Reading "Firsts" for 2024

I saw this tag over at Books, Bones & Buffy this week when Tammy did.  She credits girlxoxo for creating it.  I thought it looked fun so I'm jumping in with me answers as well!

First Book Read in 2024

I am glad I held off and didn't read this one until AFTER Christmas.  It really isn't a Christmas read as it advertises and that's probably one of the reasons it worked for me.

First Review of 2024

This technically isn't my first review of the year but I didn't want to feature the Tessa Bailey book twice so here is the second one!

First Debut Read in 2024

I just read this one over the past weekend and will definitely be looking out for what this author writes next.

First "New to Me" Author of 2024

Reading this Kimberly Lemming book was so much fun.  And my hold just arrived for the second one last night!

First Book of 2024 that Slayed Me

When I say this book broke me, I mean I sobbed!

First Book of 2024 That I Wish I Could Get Back the Time I Spent Reading It

Is anyone really shocked here?  I'm not.

First 5 Paw Read of 2024

This book was so good it deserves to be mentioned twice.

So how has your reading year been so far?  If you decide to do this, let me know so I can check out your answers!
