Can't Wait Wednesday - Dog Days of Summer Edition

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books.  It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

So guess who's back?  It's me, Booker T!  And my brother Cassius is also helping out today.  Who better to preview some new "Can't Wait" dog books than us, especially since it's the Dog Days of Summer?  We hope you like our picks!

FROM GOODREADS:
When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building.

While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time. Isolated from the rest of the world, increasingly obsessed with the dog's care, determined to read its mind and fathom its heart, she comes dangerously close to unraveling. But while troubles abound, rich and surprising rewards lie in store for both of them.

Elegiac and searching, The Friend is both a meditation on loss and a celebration of human-canine devotion.

FROM GOODREADS:
Every dog has its day…

And for Lineker, a happy go lucky mongrel from Peckham, the day the world ends is his: finally a chance to prove to his owner just how loyal he can be.

Reg, an agoraphobic writer with an obsession for nineties football, plans to wait out the impending doom in his second floor flat, hiding himself away from the riots outside.

But when an abandoned orphan shows up in the stairwell of their building, Reg and Lineker must brave the outside in order to save not only the child, but themselves…

WHY BOOKER T AND CASSIUS CAN'T WAIT:  Mom found "The Friend" the other day and we're no fools, we know she's always secretly wanted a Great Dane.  Thank heavens Dad has some sense and realizes we can't very well accommodate  one.  We also know she's been waiting FOREVER for "The Last Dog on Earth" and with a tagline of "The world is going to the dogs..." we know she'll never resist this one.

  4. I'd love to read The Last Dog on Earth. I think The Friend may be a little too serious for me, but really these are both great choices.

    1. Sometimes it's a hard thing to do. In fact, I'm pretty much out until 2018 unless they come out with some cute ones around Christmas! Oh, and you can always count on Bruce Cameron to release some.

    1. One summer, I left post-its around the house in places my husband would find saying "Cooper wants a Great Dane" and "Get me a cow, Love Barkley." I always wanted a black and white one and would joke it could be my very own cow! Needless to say, the notes didn't convince him!

  7. Hey, there, boys!! I see you've taken over this post again!! Well, I KNOW Mom LOVES your picks!! And these two are no exception! They both look great, although I must sheepishly confess that they sound a bit too emotional for me....lol. Especially the first one. I don't think I could handle that one.... As for "The Last Dog on Earth", maybe I could, but I would have to know FOR SURE that it has a happy ending. :) :)

I remember reading "Lassie Come Home" and "Big Red" when I was a pre-teen (before my horse obsession hit!), and DESPERATELY wanting either a collie, or an Irish setter! Those are still my two favorite dog breeds, although I do prefer my horsies.... No offense, boys!!

Thanks for featuring these two books, and I hope you all enjoy them!! Also, please thank your nice Mommy for commenting on my CWW post!! Have a GREAT day, all of you!! WOOF, WOOF!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    1. I love Lassie. My Mom used to have a quarter horse and show it before I came along. When she got married, she kind of got out of it. I do love horses but I'm only 5'2" so they tend to REALLY tower over me.

  15. Both sound great, but The Last Dog on Earth sounds fab. Love that tagline, and the ideas of the guy hiding out and he and the dog risking all to rescue the kid.

  18. Oof, stories about dogs left behind when their owners pass away are tough for me to read. I don't know if I could do The Friend!
