TTT - Why I Would Want My Children to Read Horror

This top 10 weekly meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and can be found HERE.  Each week they focus on lists which cover various topics related to books and reading.

Today's topic is 10 books I want my future children (nieces, nephews, etc) to read.  Since my children are of the 4-legged variety, I thought I'd share why any kid of mine should read horror and then share what 5 horror books I'd want them to definitely read. (Are you clued in that I'm not really a kid person - kids reading horror is probably a dead giveaway.  I do  like kids and worked with them for years, but as an only child in a small family, my exposure has been limited).

WHY KIDS SHOULD READ HORROR:

  • Because it will prepare them for the real world - which is rather scary
  • It will teach them good problems solving skills - if you can defeat evil clowns, you got it made
  • It's an under-appreciated genre and needs more love
  • Scary tales tend to bring people together - there's safety in numbers
  • It can teach them to confront their fears

5 HORROR BOOKS EVERY KID SHOULD READ:

A modern classic I think EVERYONE should read

A dog named Merlin in the middle of a horror novel - awesome!

So I could tell them about their Grandfather and how he scared the crap out of Grandma and they would understand.

This would teach them that people are much more scarier than monsters.

So they would know what NOT to look for when purchasing their first home.

So there you have it and yes, my kids would probably be scarred for life!

  1. I love this list! Some I've read, some I've seen in the movies. I'm not sure about kids reading them, but I'm like you - my only kids are fur babies.

  2. I love this list! I also love your reason why they should read those books. :)

  3. It's funny, I read a lot of Stephen King when I was a tween/teen, and the horror factor never bothered me, but I shy away from horror books now as an adult! I guess younger me was more courageous!

  4. I can't stand kids so you'll correctly guess I'm not doing this topic at all! I agree, if you can deal with killer clowns, there is little in life you can't deal with!

  5. Great list, Barb! I still remember buying a paperback copy of The Amityville Horror years ago (or trying to convince my mom I had to read it!)

  7. Yes! My favorite genre. I’ve only read The Shining, but this is so cool! And horror stories will definitely teach you what NOT to do lol!! Great list 🙂

  8. This is so great! I especially love you reasons why kids should read horror ;) Though I never read horror nowadays, as a kid I did weirdly love creepy stories...

  9. I started reading Stephen King when I was a kid, so I wouldn’t be surprised if my future kids love horror. Horror is the only thing I’d read as a teenager.

  10. I carried a copy of The Shining around like a security blanket when I was little. I turned out fine. :D

  11. Books are definitely a good way to introduce a kid to the genre. Personally, I was a bit of a wimpy kid and horror movies would keep me up at night, but horror novels were a way for me to enjoy the genre without being too creeped out :)

  12. If I have kids, I would want them to share my love of scary stories. I have nephews that don't like any kind of scary stuff, but my best material is scary stuff. A wasted gift...

  13. Honestly, I'm not opposed to children reading horror when they're at a maturity level to handle it (like I wouldn't let my 8 year old read any of the books on your list, but I might when he's 12). My 8 year old actually wants to read scary books (like Goosebumps) because he's easily scared at the moment and he thinks that will help him be more brave.

Have a great week. - Katie

  15. I love it. I think that kids should be able to read just about anything they want. I may not be a kid but I need to get started on some of these!
