Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books. It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.
FROM GOODREADS: In Havana, Cuba, a widow tries to come to terms with her husband’s death―and the truth about their marriage―in Laura van den Berg’s surreal, mystifying story of psychological reflection and metaphysical mystery.
Shortly after Clare arrives in Havana, Cuba, to attend the annual Festival of New Latin American Cinema, she finds her husband, Richard, standing outside a museum. He’s wearing a white linen suit she’s never seen before, and he’s supposed to be dead. Grief-stricken and baffled, Clare tails Richard, a horror film scholar, through the newly tourist-filled streets of Havana, clocking his every move. As the distinction between reality and fantasy blurs, Clare finds grounding in memories of her childhood in Florida and of her marriage to Richard, revealing her role in his death and reappearance along the way.
Filled with subtle but striking meditations on grief, marriage, art, misogyny, and the loneliness of travel, The Third Hotel is a singular, propulsive, brilliantly shape-shifting novel from an inventive author at the height of her narrative powers.
WHY I CAN'T WAIT: I can tell right now this one is probably going to be hit or miss for me. In fact, it's one I'll try to snag from the library. However, I am intrigued by her dead husband standing outside a museum and the fact that he is a horror film scholar.
WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK???
Count me in as this being hit or miss with no inbetween. Finding her dead husband certainly is intriguing, but the psychological reflection and metaphysical mystery sound.... intense.
ReplyDeleteYea, I don't know that I'm 100% sold on it but I'm willing to give it a try.
DeleteIt's a bit of a boring cover which seems a shame. It needs a creepier cover!
ReplyDeleteYes the cover could use some help.
DeleteInteresting. I agree, if done right this could be fantastic. The cover is just so so for me.
ReplyDeleteYea, you have to work really hard to tell what any of the elements are in the lettering. I do like that color blue though.
DeleteCan definitely see this as hit or miss. When I first saw the cover, it made me think of third eye instead of third hotel.
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteOooo that sounds so intriguing! Seeing your dead husband walking the streets would me out! Sounds like a great read.
ReplyDeleteI just hope he ends up being a ghost. If not, it might lose me.
DeleteOMG, Barb!! This is all kinds of AWESOME!! And you know what? It features my hometown! Yep, that's where I was born -- Havana, Cuba. My family left the country when I was 9, and I grew up in Miami, Florida. So I'm VERY interested in this book!!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the plot, too!! It's such a shame, though, that the cover is so ugly.... It should have been a more magical, mystical one. But I still want to read it! Hmmmm....maybe another buddy read? :) :)
Thanks for sharing!! Also, thanks for commenting on my own CWW post!! HUGS TO YOU AND THE WONDER PUPS, AND WOOF, WOOF TO THEM!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
Just found out, on Goodreads, that this book as classified as a horror novel....well, then maybe it will be a library read for me, too. I still want to dip into it, would you believe? LOL.
DeleteGood for you! It doesn't sound too much like horror so I think you'll be okay :)
DeleteThis definitely does sound like a hit or miss. Seems like an interesting read though. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashley and thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI am curious but I will let you try it first! :) ;)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how you like it.
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
I'm gonna have to wait until my library gets it though because I can't see myself buying this one.
DeleteThis does sound interesting. Could be an emotional read.
ReplyDeleteCould be, but I hope not.
DeleteI have not heard of this one before. The concept is interesting and I do see how it could go either way. I hope that it ends up being a hit for you! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch!
DeleteOooh, maybe a fake death? but then it says metaphysical. Hmmm.... Whichever, sounds like twit could be interesting, and I love that it's set in Cuba.
ReplyDeleteI prefer ghost over fake death but we'll just have to see how it plays out.
DeleteIt does have an interesting synopsis. Hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteKind of creepy and intriguing. I hope you end up liking it and it isn't a miss for you. :)
ReplyDeleteTressa @ Wishful Endings
Bring on the creepy!
DeleteYeah, I can tell this might be a hit or miss book for me too. Probably leaning towards not-for-me though, because of the metaphysical description, I don't tend to do well with those types of stories!

I know. I hope I'm not being jaded by the fact that he is a horror film professor.
DeleteThis one is completely new to me but I love the sound of it. I am wondering if her husband is really there or does she just think she sees him. (I saw my dad everywhere for years after his death.) I may have to check this one out myself.
ReplyDeleteI hope you do. I trust your judgement and would be anxious to hear your thoughts.
DeleteWell I hope your library gets it in right away for you to read and hopefully enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Eve.
DeleteThis sounds interesting! I would totally go to a Festival of New Latin American Cinema :) I hope you'll enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteMe too. It sounds like fun.
DeleteThis sounds pretty intriguing and I like that it's set in Havana. I hope you enjoy it when you get to read it!
ReplyDeleteYep, except whenever I read "havana" that song keeps popping into my head - in an annoying way :)
DeleteI'm also intrigued at why he was standing outside outside the museum. I hope it ends up being a hit for you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sara.
DeleteI haven’t heard of this one! It does sound good. I hope it will be a hit for you. I agree though, it does sound like it will be hit or miss.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how so many people are getting the hit or miss vibe from the synopsis?
DeleteOhh great CWW pick Barb I absolutely love horror books as well so I will see if I can check this one out from the library too when it comes out. It does looks and sounds great though but I do agree with you that it might be a hit or miss for some readers though.
