Pretty Much What I Expected

TITLE: You May Now Kill the Bride (Return to Fear Street #1)
AUTHOR: R.L. Stine
PUBLISHER: Harper Teen
PUBLISHING DATE: July 24, 2018

FROM GOODREADS: Two sisters, divided by time. Each with a terrible resentment she can barely contain.

Two Fear family weddings, decades apart... Each bride will find that the ancient curse that haunts the Fears LIVES ON. It feeds off the evil that courses through their blood. It takes its toll in unexpected ways, and allows dark history to repeat itself.

MY THOUGHTS:  I never actually read any Fear Street books when I was younger and they were popular.  I think I would have enjoyed them, but I kind of delved straight into adult horror - even as a child.  That being said, I was curious when I first learned of this book and was glad my library gave me the opportunity to read this without losing anything.

This book goes back and forth between two time periods which is a format I really enjoy.  It portrays two families each where a young woman is getting married, and the curse that spells death and destruction for the families when she does.

There's not a lot else to say about the plot.  "You May Now Kill the Bride" is a quick read but I never felt attached to any of the characters.  I actually didn't care if they lived or died.  And there was only a smidgen of witchcraft and I can sort of sum the book up as "blah."  That being said, I'm sure people who have been fans of this series since kids will enjoy this resurgence and it was a decent enough way to spend a rainy Sunday while watching football.

RATING: 3 paws

  1. I read one Fear Street book when I was younger, but I was excited to see that it was continuing. This does sound like a light, fluffy read when I'm in the need for a horror fix. Great review!

    1. It's a decent one to grab from a library if you have one you use regularly.

  2. Yep, couldn't have summed it up better myself! It was pretty much what I expected as well, but I think I enjoyed it slightly more than you. I'm a huge sucker for the nostalgia factor.

    1. I think if I had read them when I was younger, that factor would have bumped it up for me too.

  3. I skipped things like Goosebumps and kids horror and went straight into Stephen King! I don't generally bother with kids horror but I have my eye on the odd one with scary covers!

  4. How you feel about this one is how I feel about most of these books when I re-read them. They're so fun to pick up though! :)

  5. I just wasn't the right age when Stine was popular, so I just have no interest at this point.

  6. I have a bin full of these. My son and I used to read them together. Lots of easy fun reading.

  7. I haven't read much RL Stine. Like Tammy, I wasn't the right age. I tried to read one of his adult books, but I hated it. :)

  8. That's a shame but frankly if you don't care if the main characters live or die then it's failed to work it's magic really.
    Not for me.

  10. It sucks that something with such a cool cover is basically blah :(
