The biggest thing this week has been the weather. We've had some really frigid. below 0 degree weather this week and given how bad it was, I know lots of you had it worse so I'm truly sorry and hope everyone is okay. We have snow today (as I'm typing this on Friday) but by Sunday we'll be in the 50s again. Who angered the weather gods?
So onto the rant part of the program π We were trying to find something decent to watch last weekend and I remembered "Polar" dropped on Netflix. We had seen the trailer and it looked pretty decent so I snuggled in with a drink and a blanket and prepared to watch. Within 20 minutes I was swearing and on the verge of tears and told Mr. Barb if he didn't turn it off I was going to start throwing things. Spoiler alert: MOST SENSELESS DOG DEATH EVER!!!!! Hitman is retiring and goes to the mountains, rescues a cute dog (looks like a Frenchie) along the way. Falls asleep in a cabin and has nightmares of killing people, pup is licking his foot, idiot wakes up and immediately shoots dog and then realizes what he has done. It was horrible and I'll never watch the rest of the movie. I know some people will like it and the sad thing is it may be decent but it will never get a second chance from me!
Rant over and on to better things. I did get some reading done this week and nope, The Passage is still not read. I hope to dig in this weekend and get the darn thing finished for once and for all. Of course, some other books might get in the way so here's what's up next on the stack. And of course, "The Passage." But let's be real - I'm as tired of showing it as you are of seeing it.
I did have a small haul this week as well. "The Lost History of Dreams" is a Gothic mystery I received for review and "Deadly Vows" is the second installment in a cozy mystery series. "Red Sister" and "Bill the Vampire - The Tome of Bill Vol. 1" are both library books I picked up on a whim when dropping some books off Thursday at lunch.
And finally, like I said, I'd like to showcase one freebie I grabbed each week and it's such a new part of this feature that I forgot last week. This week's find is "Lincoln, Fox and the Bad Dog." It has a dog so I couldn't resist.
Never heard of Polar, but it's getting some terrible reviews so I doubt I would have watched it even had I not known about the senseless puppy death. Ugh.

Well, now I feel like we didn't miss much by not watching the rest of it. Poor puppy.
DeleteI didn't really fancy Polar at all but now I definitely don't want to go near it! The last book I read had a dog death in it and it angered me so much I decided not to read the rest of the series. It's The Remaining by DJ Molles, in case you want to avoid it!
ReplyDeleteI know in real life it happens but to make it such a senseless thing, and the story is often fine without it. I still haven't fully forgiven Grady Hendrix for My Best Friend's Exorcism - even though I have liked his other books.
DeleteI remember that scene from Polar! Both my husband and I were like, did that really just happen? So pointless.
ReplyDeleteI know. Killing the humans, I can get that, but not the puppy!
DeleteOmg that’s awful ! I almost watched that movie last night but we were too tired glad we didn’t! Confession: I think it was me who angered the weather gods with my constant whining about winter and LOL!!!!! You sound like me with the Passage! I’ve been reading it for YEARS because the loan keeps expiring on me! Smh! I want to finish Grey Sister too in this lifetime! Why do they write these mammoth books??? WHYYYY??
ReplyDeleteI really like long books and The Passage is pretty good. This is why I'm normally a one-at-a-time reader. It takes forever when you mix in other books.
DeleteUgh! I am so sorry that happened to you with the movie. I don't like seeing that stuff either. I don't even like to watch wild life animal shows on National Geographic channel. I haven't since I was a kid. The first time I went to donate plasma, Anaconda was playing and I started breaking out in a sweat and got out of there. Enjoy your books. An Unwanted Guest looks creepy good.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way with wildlife show. Now snakes, the giant ones which are obviously fake are the only ones I can watch because the others scare me too much!
DeleteUgh, thanks for warning us about Polar. You would have lost me tooπ§ The weather has been crazy, but I can't really complain because I live in California. But we are get a lot of rain and it's leading mudslides because of all the fires last summer. Good times!
ReplyDeleteOhh, I've been seeing some of those on the news. Stay safe!
DeleteNoooo! A senseless dog death?? Why?? Animal deaths in movies always hit me hard, too. I feel like they're usually unnecessary. Have you seen I Am Legend? UGH.
ReplyDeleteLindsi @ Do You Dog-ear? π¬
Yes, I Am Legend destroyed me!
DeleteI added Polar to my Netflix list. Thanks for the warning. That's one I won't be watching! You grabbed some good looking books. The dogs look like they'll be safe in those:) Red Sister has a great cover. I've not heard of it and look forward to hearing what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteYea, they definitely look like dog safe zones. I've heard lots of good thing about the whole Red Sister trilogy. It's a fantasy with assassin nuns!
DeleteLost History of Dreams - gothic - sign me up.
ReplyDeleteThat film sounds awful - I would have been so annoyed too - what the hell!
Lynn :D
Yes, Gothic gets me every time.
DeleteI don't watch any dog deaths in movies or sad dog movies where the dog dies. I heard that about Polar and will never watch it.
ReplyDeleteYou have to tell me how Who killed the Fonz is, I saw that a while ago and was so curious!
I hope this week is a great one for you Barb! Happy Reading!
Well, at least my mission to ruin it's run is taking hold. Gotta love my animal loving blog friends. I read Who Killed the Fonz this weekend - so much fun!
DeleteThanks for the heads up, we were debating Polar the other night but ended up watching stand up instead. The Lost History of Dreams sounds interesting. Hope you finish The Passage soon. Lol. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI hope I finish it soon. We watched The Hate U Give the other night. It was pretty good.
DeleteOh, I hate dog deaths!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed An Unwanted Guest. Hope you do, too.
Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
I'm looking forward to it.
DeleteEeek! Thanks for the Polar warning. That is not something I want to see.
ReplyDeleteI knew some of my friends would want to know about it.
DeleteYikes! I hate it when animals get hurt in movies. Thanks for the warning!!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Sunday Post!
Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog
Thanks for visiting. I've been sick this weekend so I'm trying to catch up with some of my blogs.
DeleteOh my re: Polar. Yeah that seems dumb and senseless and I won't watch it now, so thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteHope you like An Unwanted Guest!
So many of you guys have loved it so I have high hopes.
DeleteThe Polar Vortex seems to have lifted. Good riddance! ⛄
ReplyDeleteI started watching the movie The Butterfly Effect and I couldn't get the dog scene out of my head for a month. I didn't finish watching it, and I never will. π’
Have a wonderful week. π
I vaguely remember that movie. Dog deaths are so senseless.
DeleteOh for goodness sakes, Polar is off my lsit. I was wondering about it and almost watched it, but started watching something else instead. Thank goodness. UGH.
ReplyDeleteYou were saved in the nick of time!
DeleteI haven't heard of Polar but I wouldn't be happy with what happened to that poor dog. Who Killed the Fonz sound like so much fun. I hope you enjoy all of your new reads!
ReplyDeleteIt was such a great read. Not a hard mystery to solve but so much nostalgia.
DeleteThank you for the warning on Polar. I will never watch that movie. I still refuse to watch any of the John Wick movies after seeing the opening scenes of the first one. I am still traumatized!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I've only heard about the poor beagle and refuse as well.
DeleteI have an Unwanted Guest on audio from the library and I got Passages free at Audible. I LOVED Red Sister and will be reading and reviewing Holy Sister soon. I hope you enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteWe had some cold weather without snow, but now it's really warmed up. It's in the 70s really lovely. Have a good week! Anne - Books of My Heart
So glad to hear you loved Red Sister. I don't think I've heard anything bad about it.
DeleteI've never seen Polar but now I never will. Sounds awful and I don't blame you one bit for not watching the rest of it.
