What's Happening...(03-23-19)

So I'm doing things a tad bit differently this year and will be combining all of my regular weekend posts.  This will enable me to add more content on Fridays and it is just starting to make more sense.  I'll still be linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga's Reviews and Sunday Post at Caffeinated Reviewer.  Both blogs are awesome so make sure you check them out.

I can't believe that March is almost over.  March Madness has started and while I'm not a huge college basketball fan Mr. Barb and I always play a bracket against each other.  After the first round, we've each won 24 games.  I've already done better this year than last.

So hold on for a vent.  Mr. Barb's gall bladder has healed nicely and he has been able to eat some foods he has missed without an issue.  That's all great but darn it, he's hurt his neck and shoulder muscles somehow and then made the injury worse by using too much heat.  We went to a medical express place today and he got a prescription which will hopefully help but man, I'm about to either run away from home for a week (and take the dogs - maybe) or lock myself in a room and ignore everyone.  I'm a caretaker by nature but between my Mom and her dating madness, Mr. Barb and Gpa, I'm running on fumes!  Okay, rant over and I still love them all.

We've not found too many new movies to watch this week so we started watching an older series - Sons of Anarchy.  We really only watched the last 3 or so seasons so we missed a lot.  It's giving us something to fill the time during the evenings when we would normally stream new releases.  Of course Season 2 of Sabrina starts in 2 week and next week Season 3 of Santa Clarita Diet starts so I'm excited about that.

I've got two books I'm focusing on this weekend.  Stormi and I have both started out second buddy read of the month, "In the Valley of the Sun," which I'm about 23% into and then I'm about 24% into "The Homecoming" by Andrew Pyper.  I'm actually liking "The Homecoming" better at this point but there's still plenty of book left in both so my opinion may change.

I managed to pick up two holds from my not-so-local library (which is still less than 5 miles away) on Thursday.  I can't wait to pick up "A Curse So Dark and Lovely" especially since Stormi really liked it and it is a Beauty and the Beast retelling.  I am also curious about "The Dead Queens Club" since it's a mix of Mean Girls and The Tudors.

And finally, I grabbed a few books from Penguin's First to Read program the past few weeks.  I'm excited for them all but don't know when I'll find time to read them.  But I will!  "The Den" was already on my wishlist so I couldn't resist.  I'm not sure I'll like it but it's fairly short so we will see. "Waiting for Tom Hanks" is not a type of book you normally see here but I do have a fondness for the man and grew up with his rom-coms in the 90's so I do think I'll enjoy it quite a bit.  "The Affair of the Mysterious Letter" has tentacles on the cover so need I say more?  And finally, I've been wanting an early copy of "The Department of Sensitive Crimes" so when I saw my chance I took it.

So I hope you all got lots of good books this week so you can share them with me.  I may need more if I plan an escape.  Of course, I may need bail money too :)

  1. Good luck with Homecoming! I thought the first half was really good, but then second half kind of fell apart. Overall reminded me of the way I felt about Cabin at the End of the World.

  2. Waiting for Tom Hanks! I adore his rom coms as well (him and Meg Ryan, that is!) I have read one or two reviews of The Dead Queen's Club so I am very curious about your take on this one. (Also, I vote for you locking yourself in a room and giving yourself some TLC. YOu sound like you need a time out!)

  3. I know how you feel-I just wanted to hide under the duvet all week and just not come out! I hope Mr Barb recovers from the pains soon. My dad has just been diagnosed with migraines which is getting him down.

    1. Oh no. Help Dad gets some help. I used to suffer from migraines every once in a while but think they must have been linked to my birth control because I haven't had one in several years.

  4. What I loved about In the Valley of the Sun was Davidson's lyrical prose.

I am reading The Vampire, the Hunter, and the Girl by Martin Lastrapes. It's scary and a bit funny at the same time.

  6. Hang in there, Barb. Caregiving is so draining, right? I just read a negative review for The Homecoming, and I've also seen a bunch of positive ones for In the Valley of the Sun, so now I'm curious to see where you fall!

    1. Well, I don't think I'm gonna fall into the raving opinions of In the Valley of the Sun. My review will be up Thursday but it's not working for me. I may have my next Little Heaven!

  9. Ah that's cool you're doing well with your bracket! Hope Mr. Barb is feeling well soon. Caretaking can be hard. :)

I am not watching anything right now (other than Riverdale- sporadically) and I really need to find new shows.

  10. I was tempted by a few of the more recent First to Read offerings but decided to not add any until I get a little caught up with my older review copies. I am sorry to hear that Mr. Barb has hurt himself. I hope he is a good patient. My husband can be a bit of a baby :) Enjoy all of your new books and have a great week!

    1. Good patient - not really. It's hit or miss at times :) First to Read has had some good choices lately but they offered so many so close together. I like it when they space them out more.

  11. So many tempting books! I'm curious about The Dead Queen's Club, and also Waiting for Tom Hanks.

I LOVED Green Book. I will probably watch it again, as it's now in my Video Library on Prime.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  15. Sorry to hear about your hubby's back and neck. I hope that feels better soon. I had my gallbladder out a few years back and that s**t hurt. Hope this week is better for the both of you. I did pre-order A Curse So Dark and Lovely. I have to read that one soon. Have a good week.
