This week's topic is favorite tropes but I thought it would be more fun to mix it up.
TROPES I ENJOY MOST OF THE TIME:
1. School settings - especially in fantasy or middle grade
2. Love to hate
3. The anti-hero
4. Person saves an animal (usually a dog) but the animal really saves them
5. The reluctant hero
TROPES I USUALLY HATE:
1. Love triangles
2. Did I mention love triangles?
3. The chosen one
4. The fake relationship
5. Insta-love
So do you agree? Disagree? Let the discussion begin!
I love "love to hate" romances and anti-heroes! I also usually despise love triangles, but every once in a while you come across a really good one if it's written well. But yeah I'm with you on insta-love, I'll always hate that one :P

I have also ran across a few that didn't bother me but I usually just try to stay away from them.
DeleteI agree with all of your hated tropes. Love triangles really set my teeth on edge. For me, they belong in romance novels where romance can be to the forefront over story, not wrecking my nice horror and apocalypse plots! I'm not a fan of school settings or love to hate though!
ReplyDeleteYea, I don't mind some romance but there are books where it's just not necessary and you have to question why it was even thrown in at all. As much as I love Hunter Shea, I keep thinking about his Orca book and how much that element irritated me in it.
DeleteInsta-love and love triangles are things I don't normally like, either!
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be a popular opinion.
DeleteReluctant heroes are such interesting characters to read about.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT
They make for a very interesting story a lot of the time.
DeleteI noticed that your hated tropes are mostly romance related...ha ha, have to agree with you. Although at times I do like love triangles. Don't shoot me!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...yes they are :) Hey, no judgement here!
Deletecritters add something extra to everything!!!!!

How true!
DeleteLOVE TRIANGLES lol. I do not like that trope. Someone always ends up getting hurt in the end and it just feels unnecessary. Great list :)
ReplyDeleteGood point and sometimes not all that extra drama is needed.
DeleteA lot of mine would match yours. Especially hating the insta-love. I didn't do a list today, but I have a teaser if you feel like checking it out. My Teaser
ReplyDeleteI will run over and look now!
DeleteI really like school settings, too. There's something about the drama of school that I like.
ReplyDeleteYep...and heaven knows schools are a great place for drama!
DeleteI put something similar to #4 on my list as well, although you phrased it better. I just mentioned pet adoption in general, but it's really quality when the animal is key to the character's story and growth. (she says, trying and immediately failing to come up with recs like this...although there was a rescue dog in Erin Celello's Learning to Stay that alleviated some of its wrenching sadness)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check that book out!
DeleteOh I hate love triangles so much. I mean, enough lol. Love school settings though, especially those ultra-exclusive academies, preferably with paranormal elements haha!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think my school would have been so much better with some paranormal elements.
DeleteI think there's only been one time where I enjoyed the love triangle trope, but it wasn't one of those messy ones where you don't know where the author is going to take it. I really don't like to be jerked around, which might explain why I don't like the trope.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great reason why.
DeleteI definitely dislike love triangles and insta love quite a bit - the latter I've seen done okay a few times, but I like to see some relationship development. I actually really love fake relationships though haha. Great list! :)

I believe people can have insta-attraction, and that it can turn into more, but insta-love. Please. Also, it seems to happen more in YA books.
DeleteI hate love triangles and instalove, too! Especially in YA books.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree!
DeleteOK I'm with you on some you enjoy. Although school settings are not my favorite because they act like children sometimes. I LOVE LOVE the fake relationship, and sometimes even love triangles. But I can't stand the insta-love.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart
Seems I can't find anyone to really argue a case for insta-love.
DeleteI usually like fake relationships. I could do without love triangles though.
ReplyDeleteSeems to be a popular opinion.
Delete1000% agree with love triangles. In any medium -- books or movies or anything. Hard no.
ReplyDeleteI second that hard no!
DeleteI can't resist stories with critters in them. Insta love and triangles don't usually work for me.
ReplyDeleteWe're on the same page then :)
DeleteIt's so funny I agree with the ones you like and disagree with a lot of the ones you dislike, which is kind of a tongue twister in my mind. No but for real. Love triangles are not it. I cannot with those. I've liked a couple in the past but those were the exception not the rule you know what I mean? Most of the time, they make me cringe. Also, yes to the person who saves the animal one! That's the one I'm going to single out but honestly? You save an animal and you're basically my favourite character and I want you to have the world hahaha
ReplyDeleteDefinitely - give them the world!
DeleteLove triangles and insta love - definitely on the top of my 'don't like' list.
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
Seems a lot of people don't like them but apparently someone's reading them :)
DeleteLOL fake mates are one of my favorites. Aw the herd babies who save the humans, too. Yes. So good.
ReplyDelete(and I'm done comment bombing ya, trying to catch up after way too long being a bad blogger friend lol)
I love school settings, too! I agree with all your hates, but "the chosen one" is really difficult for me to get around because I read a lot of Fantasy.🐉
