This week's topic is books I'm avoiding reading and why. I decided to just go with five this week too as I can't really think of a lot off the top of my head.
So I started this book twice and got to about the second chapter. I loved the series so much I bought this beautiful 20th anniversary edition (does anyone know if the others will be out in this edition ever?) But right now I'm refusing to start because George R.R. Martin refuses to publish the remainder of the series - well, maybe not refuses, just hasn't done it!
Because I know I'm just going to sob. However that hasn't stopped me from buying the series, often numerous copies of each.
So I adore this series. But then I hated to read this because I knew it was the last one and I didn't want it to end. Then the companion series came out so that excuse was out the window. So then it became an issue of not wanting to lose Meg and Sam. Either way, it's been too long with no resolution in sight.
I received this edition as a gift because I had to have it. But it's LONG and the font is so TINY. #overwhelming
Have you seen the size of this sucker? I really don't mind big books but I know they really cut into all the other things I want to read. Good thing Stormi and I have a plan for attacking this one soon.
So there you have it. Well now, that was easier than I thought!
Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how many doorstopper epics I have on my nightstand that I need to read, but their pagelengths are just so intimidating! And yes, The Stand is massive, and I read the uncut version which was even bigger - I don't recommend that edition, there's definitely a reason why so much was edited out, lol!

Oh no, I think I have the uncut version!
DeleteYeah, big books intimidate me too. I need to be ready to handle a huge tome. And yes, books that I know will break my heart -- I would avoid too. However, I didn't realise just how sad the Cameron series is, and the book I read just broke my heart. :(
ReplyDeleteI know they have to be good reads and there is a whole series, but I don't know if my heart can take it.
DeleteI loved Game of Thrones, but I can understand not wanting to start a series when it might not ever be finished!
ReplyDeleteYep. The way I see it is when it's finished, I'll start.
DeleteThe Stand was a great book. Since the size is too much for you, have you considered watching the 90s miniseries based on it? It was very good and pretty faithful to the original story.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT.
I've seen that series and did you know they are making a new one for it? I'm just sure the book is so much better and I love King. Stormi and I actually have a plan to divide it across 3 months.
DeleteOh wow, you and Stormi are doing a buddy read of The Stand? That will be fun! Curious to hear what you think. I think it's become a little dated these days, but hey, its Stephen King😁
ReplyDeleteYea we are starting it in November!
DeleteYeah, I should have tried to stick with the theme - I just went with the old 'haven't had time' excuse and chose 10 books I bought a while ago.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not wanting a series to come an end is one of my issues and why I sit on a book. Sometimes I also have an issue of loving the first book in a trilogy so far that I'm almost scared to pick up the second. Then there's the size issue - particularly when you blog and review a weighty tome feels like a hurdle and the other one is negative reviews so if I see other people I trust not enjoying a book I've bought it definitely puts that book to the bottom of a pile of already overlong and overripe for reading books.
Lynn :D
Yea I agree with all of your points. I love long books but they interfere with so much. I try to focus on one when I'm off on vacations at least.
DeleteDid you know there is another book in the A Dog's Purpose series coming out soon? It is called A Dog's Promise.
ReplyDeleteYep, already got it on my wishlist. That way it can sit next to the other unread ones in the series :)
DeleteSuper long books with tiny print? I have a couple of those sitting on my shelf, too. And I don't know if I'll ever get around to reading them. ;D
ReplyDeleteYou definitely have to be in the right mood for them.
DeleteThat's why my son is in no hurry to finish the Song of Fire and Ice books that are out so far. He's read two and has the third one, but hasn't picked it up yet. 📚
ReplyDeleteI have a beautiful slipcase edition bind-up of the A Wrinkle in Time quintet and the print is ultra tiny, I would never attempt to read it, but it's just nice to have. The His Dark Materials trilogy goes on ebook sale every now and again for around $4. I'll let you know when I see it on sale again. 👍✨
Thanks, maybe ebook is the way to go!
DeleteI don't know why Martin just doesn't publish what he has for the next book. I know he likes to put out 800 page plus tomes, but after all these years- I mean, if it's 2/3 done, publish THAT so the fans can read the next installment, and seems like it would take pressure off him too. I don't understand. :)
ReplyDeleteHow true Greg. I think he enjoys all the attention. If you've ever watched "Younger" which is great BTW, they have an author who I know is a spoof of Martin because he has an unfinished fantasy season as well.
Deleteyup same reasons here why I was ever pass the first chapter of GoT or finish a King book. I only have to think of all the many books I'm not reading in the meantime LOL
ReplyDeleteKing is usually worth the time except for Under the Dome. I STILL wish I hadn't finished that one.
DeleteI can understand why lots of people don't want to start the GoT books. I've read all of the published books and they are so good that I'm wailing and screaming for the final books! I loved The Stand! The first section with the spreading virus I just loved and then you get caught up in the characters and the good v evil stuff!
ReplyDeleteI know I'd love the GoT books but I'm being stubborn because he is :)
DeleteI can understand the Bishop one. I've still not started it but hard to have a series come to a close or semi-close.
ReplyDeleteYou need to pick it up - it's awesome!
DeleteGOT is one I've been avoiding as well. I want to read it, I'm just nervous!
ReplyDeleteI don't feel so bad about not starting it now since it's taking the author so long to finish!
