Some Locke & Key Additions

TITLE: Locke & Key: Heaven and Earth
AUTHORS: Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriquez
PUBLISHER: IDW Publishing
PUBLISHING DATE: August 15, 2017

FROM GOODREADS:

Three never-before-collected additions to the series the A.V. Club called a “modern masterpiece,” showcasing the depths of depravity and the beautifully heart-breaking heights New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez have to offer.

This special deluxe release finally reprints the oft-requested and long-denied Eisner-winning one-shot, “Open the Moon!” Plus the other long-sold-out one-shot, “Grindhouse!” PLUS, the even more hard-to-find IDW 10th anniversary Locke & Key tale, “In the Can!” And additional covers, behind-the-scenes photos and more.

MY THOUGHTS: So I've read the first five volumes of the Locke & Key series. I don't know why I've not picked up the sixth and I really need to make some time for it.  It wasn't until I saw the Netflix trailer that I got to looking to see what else might be out there.  I stumbled across this edition and grabbed because I wanted to visit that world again.

There are three different tales in this edition which take us back to look at some original Locke family tales.  "In the Can!" was interesting enough but I really enjoyed "Open the Moon!"  It was quite sweet and very entertaining.  "Grindhouse!" wasn't bad but I will mention a trigger warning for rape and brutality.  However, this is a graphic novel and I can't say it really bothered me much.

On one hand I'm glad I picked this up but on the other, I didn't find it overly spectacular.  The artwork was great as always and if you are a die-hard fan of the series, this is one you're definitely going to want to read, if nothing but to fill in some backstory.

RATING: 3 PAWS

  1. I still haven't read this comic. I tried to do the audio awhile back but I was so confused.

    1. The graphic novel can be confusing at times too so I can't even imagine it on audio!

  2. I don't think they are as good as everyone seems to think they are but at the same time I am curious so I keep going...lol.

    1. There's just something about them that pulls them in. When they first came out, I don't think graphic novels were the rage they are now. I think that made a big difference.

    1. Me too. Mr. Barb isn't interested for some reason so I have to find time to watch it myself.

  4. I picked up a Locke & Key freebie audiobook a long time ago and was surprised to find out it was originally a graphic novel. There were a few of us disussing this on my music Twitter account and one of them had listened to the audiobook and said it wasn't too bad. I'll have to listen to it next year. ๐Ÿ‘✨
