To celebrate the close to halfway mark for Tammy's Summer of Horror event, I thought I would share my favorite horror books as of today. These aren't in any particular order because that would be too hard.
The Shining - Stephen King - This is one of the few books I've actually reread. I usually don't but I love it so much. I own the original cover, but this was a re-release version last year I would love to get eventually.
The Suicide Motor Club - Christopher Buehlman - I read this in 2018 and this is a no-holds-barred gritty terrorizing vampire novel. You would find any glitter in these pages. Luther Nixon remains one of the worst villains I've ever read about.
Certain Dark Things - Silvia Morena-Garcia - I think this quote from my 2017 review sums my thoughts on this book up perfectly - "This book pretty much has it all - gritty, mean and nasty vampires, drug lords, Mexican/Hispanic heritage, good cops and bad cops (and some who are both) and one of the most bad ass dogs I've ever ran across in a book in a LONG time." You simply have to meet Cuilli.
Rosemary's Baby - Ira Levin - Even though this wasn't a 5-star read for me, this one also holds a special place in my heart. When my mother was pregnant with me, my dad took her to the drive-in to see the movie. She IS NOT a horror lover and thought it was a romance story based on the title. Of course, as she was pregnant, Dad really played up the whole demon child thing for extra scares. I've always said my love of horror started in the womb.

ReplyDeleteThe Shining is one of the few King books I've read (along with Colorado Kid and On Writing). His brand of body horror tends to get to me, but I was able to stomach that one without problem.
Your poor mom LOL. But who knows, maybe her being exposed to Rosemary's Baby did play a role in your becoming a horror lover! 😂
I could have practically written this post! I love the story about your mom watching Rosemary's Baby while she was pregnant, lol. And Certain Dark Things, The Suicide Motor Club and The Shining are all time favorites of mine too😁

ReplyDeleteGreat list, I love The Shining and Doctor Sleep too. I have Rosemary's Baby on my shelves waiting to be read. That Bunnicula cover is so cute.
ReplyDeleteI've heard so many good things about The Shining but I'm a bit nervous about trying it. I have a feeling it'll freak me out. I need to try Certain Dark Things for definite though. One of my favourite horror books is Mexican Gothic by the author so I definitely need to see what she does with vampires. I don't know if my parents have ever seen Rosemary's Baby 🤔 I'd be surprised if my dad hasn't as he's majorly into horror. If you haven't read it I'd also recommend The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, another incredible vampire novel.
