Can't Wait Wednesday (109)

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books.  It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

FROM GOODREADS: Killing isn’t supposed to be easy. But it is. It’s the after that’s hard to deal with.

Nate was eight the first time he stabbed someone; he was eleven when he earned his red laces—a prize for spilling blood for “the cause.” And he was fourteen when he murdered his father (and the leader of The Fort, a notorious white supremacist compound) in self-defense, landing in a treatment center while the state searched for his next of kin. Now, in the custody of an uncle he never knew existed, who wants nothing to do with him, Nate just wants to disappear.

Enrolled in a new school under a false name, so no one from The Fort can find him, he struggles to forge a new life, trying to learn how to navigate a world where people of different races interact without enmity. But he can’t stop awful thoughts from popping into his head, or help the way he shivers with a desire to commit violence. He wants to be different—he just doesn’t know where to start.

Then he meets Brandon, a person The Fort conditioned Nate to despise on sight. But Brandon’s also the first person to treat him like a human instead of a monster. Brandon could never understand Nate’s dark past, so Nate keeps quiet. And it works for a while. But all too soon, Nate’s worlds crash together, and he must decide between his own survival and standing for what’s right, even if it isn’t easy. Even if society will never be able to forgive him for his sins.

Like a teen American History X, S.F. Henson’s Devils Within is gut-wrenching, thought-provoking, no-holds-barred look at the plague of white supremacy in contemporary American culture that may have you examining your own soul.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  I have a hard time even fathoming the concept of white supremacy but I know it's out there. It's totally not something I've ran into in books before so while this may be out of my comfort zone, I'm anxious to see how the author handles it.  I also can't wait to learn more about Brandon and his interaction with Nate.

WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK???

    1. I originally thought it was horror when I first saw it and you know I love horror. After reading the synopsis, I think it's so different from other stuff and that's why I want to read it. Plus, we know people are often scarier than monsters so technically I guess it could be horror!

  3. Could be a tough line to walk but if pulled off I could see this book being very good. American History X was so tough to watch!

    1. American History X was tough but I think it was well done. This is the first time a book synopsis has reminded me of that movie.

    1. Brave or crazy...fine line. Mr. Barb works in corrections so he's run into some characters like this. I don't know how he does it.

  19. Well, the first few words of the first sentence say it all, for me: "Nate was eight the first time he stabbed someone...." Not my type of book at all.... My little chicken heart just can't take it! Lol.

I do hope you'll enjoy this book, though, when you get it! :)

Thanks for commenting on my own CWW post!! Please thank the boys for the WOOFS, and tell them I send WOOFS right back!! HUGS FOR THE THREE OF YOU!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    1. P.S. Well, I was a bit too hasty. I read the rest of the synopsis, and the theme of the evils of white supremacy is definitely one I'm interested in. But the book still seems to be a harrowing read. Maybe, later on down the line, I will see if I can get it from my local library. So thanks for sharing!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

    2. I sort of thought you might be interested in this one. It looks like straight up horror until you really read it. However, we all know people can be more scarier than monsters!
