Weekly Reads (06/16/17)

So it's been a pretty hot week here at The Farm.  We've had some popup showers but nothing major and at least no real storms so I'm grateful for that.  Last Saturday we did some work in the backyard which needed done and then Sunday hauled some cut-down tree away and I'm glad to say that project is finished.  I've felt a tad under the weather and think my iron is low again so I'm trying to change that.  Also, I cut out soda this week (well, I'm limiting myself to 3 a week max) because I am pretty much a pop-a-holic.  So far so good. However, I have to drink flavor packets in my water for breakfast which have caffeine or I get a headache from caffeine withdrawal.

We finally managed to watch a few decent movies.  Now don't get me wrong, these aren't that awesome and I pretty much wouldn't go as far as recommending them, but they were at least entertaining.  We watched "The Drowning" which was a decent thriller. We mainly ordered it because I like Julia Styles.  I think Mr. Barb may have fallen asleep during this one.  Then we watched " Be Afraid" and I would have to admit that I may actually recommend that horror movie.  Never heard of it before but it's new and on the most part, well made.  Next was "Awakening the Zodiac" - another thriller. Finally we broke down and watched "Split."  Mr. Barb wasn't convinced we should watch it but neither of us regretted it and the main actor did an awesome job portraying someone with DID.  Oh and how could I forget, I watched "Jaws:Revenge."  I didn't really remember that one at all and actually wasn't cheering on the deaths of anyone in this one.

I finished some books over the weekend and have been knocking some graphic novels out of the way in preparation of COYER Summer Reading List Challenge.  That means I have a fresh stack of books on my choose-from list this weekend.  Here's what's up next.

And last but not least - YAY PENGUINS!!!! Back-to-back Stanley Cup Winners!

What are your plans for this upcoming week?  Have you read any of these books or seen any of the movies I mentioned? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Sounds like you had a pretty fantastic week! I've heard a lot about the movie Split and it definitely sounds super interesting; I might have to see it sometime. Good luck with the COYER challenge; I really loved it over the winter! ;-) #getsocial17

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I'm anxious to start my reading list. Need to finish a graphic novel tonight and then I'm picking up Rise of the Sea Witch first.

    2. Absolutely! Ooo, exciting! ;-)
By the way, I LOVE the font on your blog! It's beautiful!

  2. I actually liked all four Jaws films despite poor reviews on the third and fourth ones. It has sharks and death so I was happy! I'm basically reading again, trying to get through a few more books to get ahead on my Goodreads Challenge again. Next month might be a mixture of new to me authors and ebook blitzes to get the tbr moving!

    1. I'm hoping to get the last one watched sometime this week. It's the one that takes place at Sea World I think. I sort of skipped 3 and went directly to 4 so now I need to backtrack. Trying some new authors sounds like a solid plan. Can't wait to see what you pick up.

  3. I haven't seen any of the movies yet that you've mentioned but my daughter really wants to see "Split". She says the actor in it has been fabulous in other roles as well. Hopefully, we can see it soon. I don't recognize any of those books or titles but I hope you enjoy reading them. COYER sounds like a fun and chaotic experience. Good luck with it! - Mama Vicky

    1. It was a very decent movie. I wasn't sure about it at first, but really liked it and the actor is very talented.

  4. I hate yard work. I spent all last weekend doing cleanup and next weekend will be spent patching up and attempting to open our ancient pool.

I splurged and saw Split in the theater and didn't regret it. Now that the drive-in is open, I'm hoping they have a back to back horror night. They typically only do it once a season.

I keep seeing Unsub - I hope it's a good one for you.

    1. Hope you got your pool up. I onto Unsub later this week once Sea Witch is finished. It took me a while to get into that one but once I did, really liked it.

  5. I need Rise of the sea Witch for that cover alone. And I'm totally a popaholic so I feel your pain. :(

This week I watched Everybody Wants Some! (kinda sucked) and Mockingjay- the second one. So I've finally finished the movie series. I liked it. Other than that not too much. Always nice to see what folks are watching. :)

    Have a great weekend.

    1. I actually enjoyed all The Hunger Games movies. The Divergent ones - now that's a completely different story.

  6. I haven't watched any movies lately, so I can't even remember the last thing I watched. I don't watch a lot of horror or thrillers, so the only one that I've seen from your list is Jaws Revenge.

I would almost enjoy some hot weather up here. We had about 2 weeks of sunny, warm weather {a couple of days were almost hot} and then the rain returned last week and it's been rather dreary out.

A New Leash on Love looks cute!

    1. Today it's rainy and as long as it doesn't storm (which hate) we could totally use some rain.

  7. I want to cut out soda but the headaches are horrible. I cut back myself and think it is a step in the right direction. I liked Unsub and plan to read A New Leash on Love very soon. Happy reading!

    1. That's why I have to buy the water drink which has caffeine in it - at least for first thing in the morning. I actually think I'm feeling better and it's only been a week. I had a small drink a few nights ago and it almost made me ill. I'm not as hungry either.

  8. The heat here, too! Oh man! We're getting some tiny showers and it's threatening to be icky today but so far not too bad. Awesome on the yard projects! I need to get in gear and work on mine :) Hope you have a great week!

    1. I would like a nice day of showers and cooler temps - no major storms or downpours, just relaxing rain.

  9. Soda is not good Barb! So I’m glad you are cutting back even though I know caffeine withdrawal is not fun :( Hope your iron is getting back to normal levels too and you are feeling better :) Gotta watch " Be Afraid" !!!

    1. I am on my 9th day and I am starting to feel as if I don't even want it anymore. Also, I'm not really eating as much now that I'm not drinking pop. I was going to allow myself 1-2 a week and I didn't even want them so I skipped then altogether. Hope you like Be Afraid!

  10. I'm been so torn about watching Split!! You didn't regret it, so maybe I should? :/
