Weekly Reads (06/01/18) - Bring On June!

Wow, I can't believe it's June 1st!  I hope everyone had a wonderful week. Memorial Day weekend was quite busy.  On Saturday I took my Gpa to the country so he could honor his family graves.  Since he is 96, you can imagine how old some of them are.  I enjoy taking him but since seeing a snake 2 years ago, I'm always overly cautious.  We then stopped and ate at a new roadside country restaurant which I think was previously a garage - like previously as in 2-3 weeks ago!  Then on Monday he wanted to go pick strawberries at a farm about 40 minutes away.  I knew he would go without me so I went and it didn't take too long and we went early which was good because it was in the 90s all weekend. The strawberries were awesome though.

I managed to finish both "Meg" and "Undead Girl Gang" and loved them both.  I need to get some more reviews up this weekend so hopefully you'll be seeing them soon. I'm three behind and it's killing me.  My list of books I hope to get to this weekend hasn't changed.  I'm about half through with "The Coffin Maker" and LOVING it!  It's such a fun town and I can't wait to tell you guys all about it.  Here's a hint, the whole town library is horror books (and thrillers and mysteries).  Can I move there?  The sci-fi readathon starts today so I want to work "Obscura" in too but since you can read fantasy, "To Kill a Kingdom" also counts.

We watched "Annihilation" the other night.  Really pretty movie but man, I think I was lost.  The ending???  It wasn't a bad movie but it left me with more questions than answers.  I also finished binge watching "13 Reasons Why -Season 2."  I'm not sure why I like this series but I do and Season 2 was good as well. I wasn't sure the direction Season 2 would take but it totally made sense once I watched it.  However, lots of things in it ticked me off!

The pups are fine.  They haven't been out much this week because it's been so hot and Booker has a smooshed face so it's easy for him to get overheated.  A few weeks back, my Gpa threw out the opening pitch for the WV High School baseball playoffs because they wanted to honor a vet and he is a Purple Heart WWII vet.  Here is a picture that ran in the local paper.  Not too shabby considering he'll be 97 next month.  Next to Mr. Barb, he is my best friend and I'm so proud to be his granddaughter.

So I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.  Thanks for stopping by Booker T's Farm!

  1. Your grampa looks great for 97! Wow, what is his secret? It sounds like you've had a pretty great week despite the heat. My pets get so lazy when it gets that hot but we only had one hot day so far so the A/C's are NOT going in yet! How was the food at that garage restaurant?

    1. Well, he's worked his whole life, doesn't know how to sit still and pretty much rarely eats meat. Plus I think he inherited some because his Gpa lived to be 101 and was still getting around at that age as well. Heat makes me lazy and the dogs would still go out in it but I tend to be cautious because Booker T has a smooshed in face and it effects his breathing when it's hotter.

  2. We went strawberry picking last weekend too, it's one of our family's yearly activities around this time of the year. The fields opened a bit late this year though because of the wonky weather, but the strawberries were sweet and gorgeous. And that's awesome your grandpa threw the opening pitch. Thank you for your service, Barb's grandpa!

    1. Yea, there were tons that weren't ripe yet but and it was the first week they were doing it but we didn't have any trouble picking what we wanted. Just yesterday, they dropped the game ball off to him. All the team wanted to sign it for him. I think that's pretty cool for high schoolers. Sometimes they can be pretty self centered.

  3. Your grampa looks amazing for his age! I think I'd be cautious about the snakes too! I have real worries about the book and the film for Annihilation. It just sounds like both go weird and I'm not a fan of that. Gah!

    1. I can honestly say that the movie was weird. It was done well and really pretty effects but I can't say that I understood a lot of it.

  6. Your Grandpa is awesome, Barb! He is so active and seems like he enjoys life. I hope I am throwing out pitches when I am his age. I want to see Annihilation but think I might want to read the book first. Have a great week!

    1. Yep. Sometimes I'd like to slow him down because I worry about him but I've pretty much decided he's lived that long and he can make his own choices.

    1. Yep and it even made it over the plate - which I think he was secretly worried about.

  8. Thanks for sharing your grandpa. :) It's wonderful that you've had so much time with him. I'm a little frightened by the image of the garage restaurant, though.

    1. I was too! It was clean, but a tad disorganized. The hot dogs were pretty good but I wouldn't want to eat there regularly.

  9. Hey, I see that LOTS of great things have been going on for you and your family!! :) :)

Your Grandpa looks AMAZING!! And he's a Purple Heart-decorated WWII hero!! I know how proud you must be! And I only hope I will have his stamina when I get to be 96! (Crossing my fingers that I get there....)

Of course, I would stay FAR AWAY from that town library full of horror books! LOL. (An image of hiding under the bed just popped into my mind....)

I'm glad you enjoyed your reads! No comment on the genres...... :)

Gee, I can't BELIEVE how hot it was up there last weekend!! I thought that temps only got into the 90s in Florida and Arizona. Lol. I forget that they that high up north, too..... Yeah, even in NYC! I HATE it when it gets that hot!! And it's SO humid down here! Maybe it's not that humid up in WV, huh? But still, the pups had to stay indoors.

Thanks for sharing!! Glad you guys had a GREAT time! HUGS TO YOU AND THE BOYS, AND WOOF, WOOF TO THEM!!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
