Can't Wait Wednesday (271)

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books.  It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

FROM GOODREADS: A gorgeously gothic, deeply romantic YA debut fantasy about two enemies trapped inside a crumbling mansion, with no escape from the monsters within.

Honor your oath, destroy your country.

Wren Southerland is the most talented healer in the Queen’s Guard, but her reckless actions have repeatedly put her on thin ice with her superiors. So when a letter arrives from a reclusive lord, asking Wren to come to his estate to cure his servant from a mysterious disease, she seizes the chance to prove herself.

When she arrives at Colwick Hall, Wren realizes that nothing is what it seems. Particularly when she discovers her patient is actually Hal Cavendish, the sworn enemy of her kingdom.

As the snowy mountains make it impossible to leave the estate, Wren and Hal grow closer as they uncover a sinister plot that could destroy everything they hold dear. But choosing love could doom both their kingdoms.

Allison Saft’s Down Comes the Night is a snow-drenched, gothic, romantic fantasy that keeps you racing through the pages long into the night.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  Well let's see.  A snowy setting, a Gothic take and a gorgeous cover.  That's enough for me.  It is a rather long wait though.

CASSIUS'S PICK:

SYNOPSIS: From the Introduction by Tabatha Wood: "What follows is a varied collection of dark canine tales that will excite, thrill and captivate readers, while supporting a truly worthwhile cause. And above all else, you know the dog won’t die."

From the Foreword by Alan Baxter: "As the stories in this book point out, dogs are the best, and we should all try to be a little bit more like them. Except the butt-sniffing. We don’t need that. Unless it’s your personal kink, in which case, enjoy! Meanwhile, read this book, be transported by the dark tales, and enriched by the wagging tails. And remember, you are awesome."

17 short dark fiction stories, some poems, some illustrations. featuring dogs that you know won't die...

WHY CASSIUS CAN'T WAIT:  I already went ahead and preordered this one for Mom because I think she deserves a treat.  Plus the proceeds go to mental health charities in New Zealand so it's  a good cause.
I always get scared when there's dogs in horror books so I'm glad that I could assure Mom that all the dogs in these tales live!

WHAT BOOKS CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK???

  1. Down Comes the Night lost me with "deeply romantic". 😅

Great choice, Cass! A guarantee that no pups die in the end is a huge selling point for me. I will be checking it out. 🐾✨

  10. Ooh, love the sound of the first one. Not so sure about the YA romance tag, but I'm definitely in for "Gothic" and "snowy setting!"

    1. I'm hoping the romance in minimal. As long as there are other things going on, I should be fine.

    1. I've actually been having nightmares more often now that the whole COVID-19 thing has happened. I'm hoping some horror will at least change their direction :)

  15. There should be a rule that any book featuring a dog needs to state in the blurb whether the dogs survives or not. Nods. Cassius pick has me really excited for something that looks so disturbing given the cover lol

  17. Huh. I wasn't prepared for Down Comes the Night to be a fantasy story. The cover looks more like a historical fiction/thriller book. Interesting choice. Hope you enjoy it!

  24. Down Comes the Night sounds absolutely fabulous, but I think I'm gonna wait for reviews to come in before deciding whether to read it. If the focus is on the romance, it's probably going to be a pass for me. It sounds like it'd be really good, though!

Oooh, Black Dogs, Black Tales sounds great, and perfect for you! I hope you enjoy it.

    1. I don't mind romance as long as it's not the primary focus so I'll definitely have to see about this one.
