What's Happening (04-23-21)...

So once again I'm going to try to make this a regular feature.  I got really bad about updating at the end of 2020.  Hopefully I'll get better at checking in regularly.  As always, I'm linking up with Stacking the Shelves at  Tynga's Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Reviewer.

It's been a busy few weeks.  The job is going really well but there's so much to learn.  I'm having flashbacks of being a Pre-Law major in college as I research WV rules and statutes and see how they apply to  the work I'm doing.  Besides the first three days, I've worker the remainder of the first five weeks at home and have to say that is definitely a plus as well.  I do have to make myself go out into the real world though or I sometimes find myself feeling closed in and stressed.  You could say I'm a work in progress - haha.

On Wednesday I also got the first of my COVID vaccines.  I get the second one in 4 weeks.  I felt kind of odd the first night and my arm really hurt for three days but I wouldn't NOT get it.  Grandpa is back in the hospital.  Tuesday myself and a family friend tried calling him all day and after a few hours of not getting him on the phone, I finally called my Aunt and told her to go lay eyes on him.  Three hours later and she hadn't made it there (it was a REALLY far mile and a half I guess) so I called Mom and she left work to go.  He had barricaded himself in the house, moved the couch and loveseat to the middle of the room, turned on a flood light and took all the lampshades off the lamps and crawled down inside the couch.  They thought he had actually passed because the house was close to 100 degrees inside because it was almost 80 that day and he had the heat cranked up.  Luckily he was physically fine but he no longer recognizes any of the family.  I thought it might pass and we might get sparks of him back but so far, nope.

I have still been reading and watching.  I'm hoping tonight to watch Godzilla vs Kong.  But I don't want Kong to die so I'll have to look up spoilers first.  I've been purchasing a few books here and there.  I keep telling myself it's a treat for my new job but it's probably more like retail therapy.  Needful Things is for a buddy/retro read.   This month Stormi and I are actually reading the same book.  I had a hardback somewhere but I think a few boxers ago it might have gotten eaten as I can't locate it.  I love the New Orleans setting of Ruby so grabbed it at Wal-Mart on a whim and I've been hearing great things about the Theodora Goss series.  And isn't Moon Dog adorable?

And I received some great books for review. I snagged a copy of Feral Creatures and I was in Wal-Mart (no, I don't live there) when I got the email notification.  I think I danced in the aisle.  I've read a few books by Chizmar so I'm very curious about Chasing the Boogeyman.  Just One Look promises to be an exciting thriller and finally, after falling in love with Glenn Rolfe's Until Summer Comes Around last year, I knew I had to read his newest release, August's Eyes.

So Cassius and Apollo want to wish all who celebrate a wonderful Easter and as always, they thank you for stopping by Booker T's Farm!

  1. Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandpa. That's gotta be so tough.

I saw Godzilla vs Kong last night! It's not a great movie, you know, writing wise or anything, but the battles are great and it's totally a Kong movie- he gets WAY more screen time and development, if you will.

Did you start a new job? I was pre- law too in college. And congrats on the vaccine!

    1. Yea I started about 5 weeks ago. I'm working for the state in the Inspector General's office - but from home. I'm really enjoying it. I think my degree ended up being in Criminal Justice with a pre-law focus. Man, those were the days.

  2. It's good to hear that loads of bloggers that I follow got their vaccine. But it's also frustrating because The Netherlands is lagging behind SO HARD. And since I'm 29, healthy and not in a medical job I won't get it for so long. Maybe till September or even later.

Sometimes it's frustrating because I see all other countries give a vaccine to teachers. We'll I'll just be patient and I'm really happy for people who did get it!

Have a great week ahead with loads of good books and sunshine :)

    1. I hope you can get your vaccine soon. My state has really opened up qualifications so I was really lucky. My husband has had his for months because he works in a correctional facility and they were in the first round.

  4. Sorry to hear about your grandpa😥 But I'm glad you're enjoying your new job. I think the biggest disappointment of all my years blogging was having my request for Feral Creatures declined😭😭😭 I'm seriously baffled as to how that happened.

    1. WHAT! How did that happen? I'm pretty sure YOU are the reason I read it. Sometimes I'm so confused at how those things work!

  5. Sorry about your Grandpa. It's so hard to watch loved ones decline like that. But I'm glad to hear your new job is going well. Yay for small blessings. Hang in there!

    1. Yes, I'll take a blessing any way it can come. He actually remembered enough to have the nurse call me Saturday night and even though I couldn't really understand him, it was nice hearing his voice.

  6. I'm glad you're getting settled into your new job and got some good arcs. I got a couple of K-9 freebies this week and thought of you. We get the second shot this week but I don't think we will be going out much anyway.

    1. Ah man, I'm off to check out the freebies! I'm in no hurry to start "socializing" as we never did that much anyway. I'm just happy to fell a tad bit safer.

  7. I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. It must be very hard but I imagine the hospital is safest for him for now. I can't imagine him in that house in that heat, I would have feared something had happened too. Onto book news, I see Feral Creatures on there which deserves a big yay! And also Happy Easter to you as well :)

  8. I am so sorry to hear about your grandpa. Dementia isn't kind. My mother in law has been in a nursing home and gets her family so confused. Covid has not helped since we were not allowed a real visit for so long. She got up and walked out after 10 minutes when my husband was finally able to see her after probably a year. I can imagine how challenging it must be to learn a new job. I was so excited to be approved for Feral Creatures. I cannot wait to see what ST is up to!

  9. So sorry to hear about your grandpa. That's always so hard when they get to the point they don't remember. I read Ruby way back when it first came out, and haven't read it in a long time. So I can't decide if I'll watch the tv movies they've made of that series. New jobs are always stressful at first, but hopefully they work out in the end, like I hope mine does next school year!

  10. I'm sorry that your grandpa has been taken over with the dementia. I remember when my mum's mind went with the cancer and she had no clue who I was. It was very upsetting. I'm sorry you're going through it.

I can't go near Kong films unless I know the monkey survives. I think he survives Skull Island so I can maybe watch that. Let me know which Kong ones you check for monkey death!
