Top 10 Books for Readers Who Like Horror

Thought I would mix it up and do something different this week so I am participating in the Top 10 weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week they focus on lists which cover various topics related to books and reading.  This week is the top 10 books for readers who like_______ and I picked horror. These are in no particular order because while I like making lists, I am horrible at placing them in any certain order.

1.  Wither (Wendy Ward Trilogy): J.G. Passarella.  This is the first in a trilogy about witches and not the cute, glittery type.  I actually would recommend all three and I plan to re-read them sometime next year.

2.  The Policy: Bentley Little.  Little is a wonderful horror writer and while I have only read 3 or 4, there are many more waiting on my TBR.  A definite for anyone who like Koontz's older stuff or Stephen King.

3.  Dark Corner: Brandon Massey.  Wonderful gothic-like horror.

4.  Heart-Shaped Box: Joe Hill.  I love this book.  Joe Hill definitely learned a thing or two from his Daddy.

5.  The Good House: Tananarive Due.  This is a wonderful haunted house tale that combines a haunted house, African American heritage, and curses.  A long book at 597 pages, but one which is definitely worth picking up in my opinion.

6.  The Birthing House: Christopher Ransom.  Another haunted house tale.  Looking at my list, I guess I have a thing for reading about haunted places.  Although I read this in 2009, I still recall it giving me the creeps.  It doesn't have very good ratings on Goodreads, but I still consider it worth a try and I have it 4 stars.

7. So Cold the River: Michael Koryta.  Another great writer.  A story about a long-forgotten evil in an old restored resort.

8.  Plague Town: Dana Fredsti.  This is probably more of an urban fantasy, post apocalyptic book but it has zombies - scary zombies - and I love it so I am counting it :)  Great trilogy although I need to read the last one.

9.  The Shining: Stephen King.  Another haunted residence.  I definitely see a pattern going on here.

10.  It: Stephen King.  I saved the best for last and could probably include almost all of King's book on here which I have read.  Honorable mention would have to go to Salem's Lots because get real, those are real vampires and not the sparkly things you read about today.

Do you agree or disagree with any of these?  Leave a comment and a link to your blog so I can check out your lists.

  1. I got very excited when I saw your list title as I love horror! IT is my all time favourite horror and I also very much enjoyed Heart Shaped Box. I have a pile of Bentley Little books on my tbr that I picked up last year but haven't tried yet and Plague Town is in the house somewhere. My horror reads tend to be more connected to monsters than haunted places. Have you tried Adventureland by Steve Harris and Carnival of Fear by JG Faherty? I love those books!

  2. I saw you recently had Carnival of Fear posted on your blog and I thought it looked great. I will have to look it and Adventureland up and see if I can get them for my Kindle. I really enjoy Bentley Little and should read more of his stuff. Plague Town is great if you like snarky female characters with attitude.

  3. I think IT scarred me for life! I don't trust clowns anymore, that's for sure. Heart Shaped Box FREAKED me out! I had to put it in the freezer more than once. Talent sure runs in that family! Great list! Thanks for stopping by Michelle's Minions!

  4. I plan on re-reading IT this year as part of a Hail to the King challenge and hope to re-read Heart Shaped Box as well. I don't do many re-reads so a book is pretty special for me to want to read twice.

  5. I must admit, I haven't even heard of most of these... with the exception of the Stephen King books, of course. I guess I don't read a lot of horror. I've never even read a Stephen King novel! (I want to change that, though.)

    1. I am doing a challenge called Hail to the King where I plan in reading/re-reading 8 King novels or stories this year. He is my favorite author of all time and probably why I started reading so much in the first place.

  6. Excellent list! You can't go wrong with Stephen King or his son! Have you ever read Horns? :)

    1. I read Horns and really loved it. Then I watched the movie a few months ago and was slightly disappointed. Daniel Radcliff did a good job, I just didn't care for the adaptation. Still have NOS4A2 on my TBR.

  7. Lovely list. Read those Stephen King books long, long ago and can still remember them. I discussed SO COLD THE RIVER with my mystery book group a few years ago. Such a good discussion. Good job here!

    1. I am so glad to find someone else who likes So Cold the River. I have read another book by Koryta but I can't recall which one right now. Thanks for visiting.

  9. I am not much of a horror fan myself, to be honest. I will read the occasional horror book, but it has to have a REALLY great plot to drag me in. The weird part is, I often like them after I DO read them, so I should probably check some of these out! Great list :)
