Weekly Reads (03/24/17)

So it's officially Spring and I'm wearing more clothing now than I did in January and February.  Not only do I think the weather is confused, but it's confusing me as well.  The Farm has been very calm and serene this week and I hope this is the beginning of a new trend.  We have been planning some backyard projects and looking at a few things we want to do around the house this Spring and Summer as long as the weather cooperates.  Booker T and Cassius are doing great except I wish someone would tell them they don't need to wake Mom up in the middle of the night to go outside and see if the raccoon that visited a few weeks ago has returned.

We watched a few movies this past week which I think were pretty good or at least entertaining,  First we streamed "Passengers."  I don't think it got very good reviews but I have to be honest, I really liked it.  Mr. Barb didn't and I can see his point.  It's advertised as a space thriller (I think) and it really was 75% romance/love story.  If you like action, it's probably not the movie for you.  I liked the characters and the story though.  Then we watched "Brimstone" which I believe is a straight to streaming movie.  It has some fairly big names (Kit Harrington, Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce - and oh, did I mention Kit Harrington).  It's a suspenseful western with a really creepy Reverend (Pearce) and is told in 4 chapters.  Let me just tell you it confirms my belief that the scariest people in horror/thriller movies are people themselves and not monsters.

It's also looking to be a decent reading month.  I'm trying to catch up on my Goodreads challenge and at least making progress.  I've really enjoyed the last few books/graphic novels I've read so I hope the trend continues.  Here's what's up on this weeks stack and I think I may be able to get them done before March is finished.

I hope you all have lots of fun stuff planned this weekend/week ahead and thanks for stopping by.  I love hearing from my regular visits and enjoy new people stopping by and commenting as well.

  1. Wow, you had a raccoon visit you? I'm jealous - living in England I've never seen one before :(
I tagged you in the You're Not Good Enough book tag: I hope you'll rise to the challenge!

    1. They are really cute and usually mean as hell. I really don't want the dogs to stumble upon it in the backyard and I think my husband ran it off (didn't hurt it) so hopefully it's gone. I saw it earlier this week on the neighbor's roof across the street. I mentioned on your blog that I will be doing your challenge next week. Thanks!

  2. Dang it, I wanted to watch Passengers but if the love story content is that high then I'll be giving it a miss for sure. Not that I'm watching films right now. My nights are split between reading and watching Gold Rush dvds! I'm a race against time to finish up my month's reading. I don't think I'll complete my monster choices as I lost a few days to insomnia which is a pain. Still, the reading has been good overall this month so I'm not complaining!

    1. I hope I didn't steer you wrong. I don't like love stories really (unless there are dogs, and BTW, there are cute little robot machines that reminded me of dogs in this movie). And I enjoyed this one so the romance couldn't have been that disturbing. I just didn't expect it at all so that's why I felt the way I did. I sort of liken your movie preferences to Mr. Barb's and he didn't like it so there is that as well.

  3. We have raccoons and possums but we rarely see them, which is good because the dogs would be barking non stop! I have the day off work today and my husband and kids are going on a weekend road trip, so I'm thrilled to have the house to myself for a few days. I'm going to see Beauty and the Beast today!

    1. We had a giant possum once. I mean giant. Husband thought I was exaggerating until he saw it. I named him Otis and we ran him off. We live in the middle of town so that's why these critters are so unexpected for us. I grew up in the country though.

  4. It's pretty much spring here and we are getting the storms to prove it which is the part of spring I don't like. Though I think and hope the severe part is not going to hit us this time but it's rumbling out there and I have a house full of jittery dogs, including my two big ones from outside...ugh.

I am curious about the Karen White novel as it seems like a lot of people like her books but I haven't read her.

    Enjoy your weekend reading!

    1. Yea I don't look forward to spring/summer storms with Booker T. He still has some Xanax left and it does seem to help him so if I have to use some, it's well worth it but boy, it makes him tired.

  5. haha boxers DO NOT like Raccoons. Our boxer used to wake up us too :) Glad you enjoyed Passengers I did too! I reviewed it and gave it 4.2 stars :) Brimstone sounds good! I'll give it a try. You are 100% right the worse monsters in horror stories are people.

    1. I think we are in the minority with Passengers. However, I'm glad you enjoyed it too. Yep, I hate to think what my pups would do if they actually got hold of one of them.

    2. It's hard to imagine a boxer doing anything questionable :) but maybe they do have a dark side when it comes to raccoons :)

  6. Don't you love it when the dogs wake you up at night? So much fun...lol. The weather is crazy. I was hot on Monday and wearing my winter coat on Tuesday. Your movie descriptions make me want to sit down and watch a few. Have a great week!

    1. Yes the weather continues to be crazy. I can't believe it's come to this but I'm actually glad my pups only wake me up once in the middle of the night - sometimes they try it two times a night!

  7. Thanks for your thoughts on Passengers, sounds like I'll be skipping. It bothers me when books are sold as action/thriller and they turn out to be more about romance, so the same kind of frustration applies to movies that do the same :)
