FROM GOODREADS: If you were told the date of your death, how would it shape your present?
It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes.
Their prophecies inform their next five decades. Golden-boy Simon escapes to the West Coast, searching for love in '80s San Francisco; dreamy Klara becomes a Las Vegas magician, obsessed with blurring reality and fantasy; eldest son Daniel seeks security as an army doctor post-9/11, hoping to control fate; and bookish Varya throws herself into longevity research, where she tests the boundary between science and immortality.
A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth, The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.
WHY I CAN'T WAIT: I think initially the traveling psychic aspect of this book that got my attention - right after that cover of course. Plus, I'm curious how knowing the date of your death plays out. I personally think that would be a horrible thing to know, but there are some good aspects to knowing it as well. Either way, I'm interested in this one.
WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK???
Yeah I don't think I would want to know. If the psychic said you had only a few years left how would that feel??? *shudders* Hope you enjoy it when you read it!
ReplyDeleteI know..or even worse, what if they said you had days!
DeleteIt does sound like an interesting one.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover too - probably because it reminds me of fall.
DeleteIA, that is a wonderful cover, and highly intriguing blurb. The idea of a spoiler alert for the rest of your life is something I understand, but you're right, seeing how these 4 different individuals make sense of what they're told.
ReplyDeleteYea, I bet they all four respond in totally different manners.
DeleteI wouldn't want to know. It would alter how my life would go and would always be on my mind.
ReplyDeleteYea, it's not like you could forget something like that!
DeleteI love the cover! Also, the story sounds good. I like family sagas, although I would not want to know my death date!
ReplyDeleteMe either!
DeleteI'm not sure this one is for me. But I really hope you enjoy it! Have a great week!

Thanks Sandy.
DeleteI really like the sound of this, Barb, for exactly the same reasons you stated. I am adding this to my wish list.
ReplyDeleteAs a side note, my dad had a coworker years and years ago who claimed to have psychic ability. He had asked her about his future and she refused to tell him. I don't know if it was an ethical decision on her part, not wanting to give my dad bad news, or she was a fraud, but I think my dad came away from it thinking it was bad news.
I'm afraid if I was your dad I would thing the same thing. I think there is something to self-fulfilling prophecy. If you think something bad is going to happen, you'll see the bad in everything.
DeleteThis does sound intriguing. I'm split between would want to know and wouldn't. Definitely could go both ways. Plus, that cover is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThere are definitely pros and cons to each side.
DeleteThe psychic aspect is what drew me to it too. I can't wait to read it. :)
ReplyDeleteJenea's Book Obsession's CWW
That's probably why I want to read it.
DeleteThis sounds really interesting! Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're quite welcome Ashley - thanks for stopping by.
DeleteErgs. Yeah I don't know if I'd want to know that exactly, either. Would mess with your mind for sure. Hope you enjoy this one!
ReplyDeleteYep, that's one heck of a mind trip.
DeleteWow! This is the first time I have heard of this book. That beginning line in the synopsis really makes you think. Thanks so much for sharing this one. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
DeleteIt's an intriguing premise, but I'm not sure I'd want to know exactly either.
ReplyDeleteI don't think most people would.
DeleteI have a copy of this one and am really looking forward to it. I hope you enjoy it when you get the chance to read it.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear your thoughts!
DeleteI don't think I'd want to know the date of my death either, I just don't think a normal life would be possible with that doozy always on the back of my mind!
ReplyDelete~Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum
Not something you could easily forget.
DeleteThis sounds neat? Knowing the date of your date, you say? I wouldn't want to know. It's fascinating to think about though. I hope you enjoy this book when you get the chance to read it!
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous week. =)
Check out my WoW post!
It could be a pretty interesting book if done well. I'm excited to see.
DeleteOooh! This sounds like an interesting read! Thanks for checking out my WoW!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI don't think I'd want to know, but it would be tempting in a weird way!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I mean, if they knew you'd live to be in your 90's, it might not be so bad. But if they said you had a week, you'd be screaming "take it back! take it back!"
DeleteGreat pick this week. I want to read this one too and requested an ARC for it a while back but haven't heard back yet.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you'll get a copy!
DeleteThe last paragraph of the book description really got me. Great pick ~ Enjoy!

First of all, sorry for the late comment back....I've gotten behind again! :(
ReplyDeleteThis is certainly a thought-provoking concept, Barb. I'm not sure how knowing such a creepy thing as the date of one's death would affect most people (me, I'd become a basket case, I think!), but the idea is certainly interesting, from a philosophical standpoint. So I would definitely like to read this one! Thanks for putting it on my radar! :) :)
Hope you enjoy this book, too!!
Thanks as well for commenting on my CWW post!! HUGS TO YOU AND THE BOYS!! AND "WOOF, WOOF" TO THEM!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
