This week I'm sharing my 5 favorite books I liked as a kid. I've never been a real traditional reader and started reading adult books rather young, but these are the children books that I recall the best (I read a lot of Anne Rice and Stephen King the minute I hit the 6th grade).
I loved Bunnicula so much growing up that just last year, I bought the complete box set. This book was a perfect match for "Child Barb." It had animals and vampires - who cared if he sucked carrot juice.
I also loved Black Beauty and remember reading it several time. I also collected horse figurines because my mom used to raise and ride quarter horses.
I had a whole collection of Nancy Drew books as a child. I remember belonging to a subscription where I was sent two each month. I couldn't wait to get them in the mail and then I would quickly devour them. Probably where my love of mysteries started.
It has to be no real surprise that I loved Clifford the Big Red Dog.
I remember getting the box set of this series one year for Christmas and I was thrilled. I loved reading the books but for some reason, always liked Mary more that Laura.
Did you read any of these books or have any other favorites?
How cute is the bunny with the fangs! I've never seen that one before! I never did read Nancy Drew though my mum loved the books. I watched Little House on the tv every Sunday but never read the books for some reason.
ReplyDeleteOh you should check him out. He's a vampire bunny who lives on a farm but drains carrots instead of people. I bought the whole box set last year!
DeleteI love Bunnicula!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHe's so awesome isn't he?
DeleteI Loved Nancy Drew as a kid. My library didn't have all of them so they had to borrow them from other libraries for me. I also love the Little House books. I just recently re-read Farmer Boy. I have been to a couple of the the sites where Laura lived.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool that you've been there. That would be awesome to have seen those places. It was such a great show back then. Not a whole lot out there like it now - man, I feel old.
DeleteMy sister and I read a lot of Nancy Drew when we were kids, too. My grandma had kept a lot of my aunts' old books, so we read those. But like you, I also started reading "adult" books pretty young; I remember reading a lot of Stephen King when I was a teenager!
ReplyDeleteYes, another early Stephen King reader. I wonder if he is truly aware of how many young kids he "corrupted?" I remember my paternal grandmother would freak out that my parents would let me read that "crap."
Deleteomg I'm SO sure my daughter would have a BLAST with Bunnicula!! Off to find it NOW Thanks for sharing this list! :) I'll check out the Hidden Staircase too! My daughter is like us Barb, she likes dark and mysterious LOL
ReplyDeleteHow exciting she likes dark and mysterious huh? You definitely have to get her Bunnicula. There is a whole box set you can grab pretty reasonable on Amazon if you shop there.
DeleteI've heard good things about Bunnicula, but never read it. I think I picked up a copy at my thrift store somewhat recently though, so I may have to check it out. Great list. - Katie
ReplyDeleteIt was a fun series and I want to reread it soon.
DeleteI shared Bunnicula with my niece and nephew. I hope they liked it as much as I did growing up!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT is along a similar path. https://nashvillebookworm.wordpress.com/2017/09/12/top-ten-tuesday-books-i-loved-growing-up/
Me too!
DeleteI also read a bunch of Nancy Drew when I was a kid! I was a big sucker for The Babysitter's Club too. lol
ReplyDeleteDo you remember the Bobsey Twins? They went around solving mysteries too and I liked them as well.
DeleteI loved the Laura Ingalls books but Nancy Drew as my main love! I still like them! I somehow missed Bunnicula growing up but after Stormi introduced me to it a few years ago my then 6 year old and I listened to it on a road trip and both fell in love with it. I got the tshirt on Outofprint.com!
ReplyDeletePS - I saw your note about the SodaStream on my blog. As long as you follow the directions they're pretty great. Mine only exploded because I decided I knew better than the directions!
I'm gonna have to look for a t-shirt and thanks for the advice on the soda stream!
DeleteAhh, Nancy Drew and Black Beauty = fond memories.
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
Such classics!
DeleteI was obsessed with Nancy Drew and Little House. They were the best!
ReplyDeleteBoth series had special places on my shelves growing up.
DeleteClifford!!! Yes! <3
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I couldn't understand why there were no red dogs!
DeleteBunnicula kinda scares me lol. And I read some of the Nancy Drew books, along with a ton of Hardy Boys!
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteAwww, Little House and Nancy Drew. Those were the days. Nostalgia overload!
ReplyDeleteI know. However, this topic also made me feel old!
DeleteWonderful list! I also loved many of these books! Another of my favorites was Corduroy. I recently re-read it, and my god, I still love it! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've read that one. I'll have to look it up. Is Corduroy a bear?
DeleteYes, he is! :) I think it's a he... Could be wrong though! :)
DeleteI loved my Little House box set. I think it is sitting on my daughter's bookshelf right now. I remember being so proud when I had finally read them all. Great list!
ReplyDeleteHow cool you still have it. I don't know what happened to my childhood books!
DeleteGreat list! I loved reading Bunnicula when I was little! I need to read that series again!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my TTT!
Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog
Seems many people remember that crazy rabbit.
DeleteOh my goodness, Bunnicula! I remember loving that one as well, when I was a kid. I can't wait til my kids are old enough so they can read it for themselves too. For now, Clifford will probably do for my older daughter, that big red pooch was a favorite of mine too growing up :)
ReplyDelete~Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum
Such good memories huh?
DeleteBlack Beauty was one of my favourite books as a kid too!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT: https://jjbookblog.wordpress.com/2017/09/12/top-ten-tuesday-124/
I also had the Black Stallion collection too.
DeleteOh, great list! ALthough I never read Bunnicula, but somehow that doesn't surprise me that that's on your list. :) I had 2 others I loved - Just Only John (a little known book that is SO darn cute with a great message; and includes some magic!) and How Fletcher Was Hatched about a dog who is worried his girl doesn't love him anymore because she's obsessed with some baby chicks. So cute!
ReplyDeleteI recall How Fletcher Was Hatched now that you mention it. Cute book!
DeleteI thought about doing this exact same topic. :) Bunnicula would have definitely been on my list as well.
ReplyDeleteYou know what they say about great minds.
DeleteI didn't read "Black Beauty" but I loved all the others! I read through all the Nancy Drews one fabulous summer, and I LOVED "Bunnicula" (I was *mildly* obsessed with rabbits as a kid). I actually re-read that one a couple years ago and it was totally adorable!
ReplyDeleteRabbits are cute. We saved a bunch of baby bunnies once after the mom got killed when I was a kid.
