What's Happening...(03-30-19)

So I'm doing things a tad bit differently this year and will be combining all of my regular weekend posts.  This will enable me to add more content on Fridays and it is just starting to make more sense.  I'll still be linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga's Reviews and Sunday Post at Caffeinated Reviewer.  Both blogs are awesome so make sure you check them out.

So I haven't ran away from home yet and it's looking like I might not have to use that option - although thanks to some of my followers who invited me to hide out with them.  Mr. Barb's shoulder seems to be healing.  Now don't get me wrong.  It's not healing as fast as he would like, but it is getting some better which means he's not as annoying (love ya babe).  

However, poor Booker T was under the weather earlier this week.  We've been noticing he's a little slower the past few weeks but it came to a head Monday and he was clearly in pain.  I don't know if he pulled something or what.  A quick call to our vet and they had us some meds to pick up which thank heavens are working.  Now he thinks he's super pup.  The downside though is that he may have to stay on them but if it's what he needs then it will be done.  He's our baby after all (well, one of them).

It seems like I spent all week trying to read "In the Valley of the Sun."  I'm not in a slump but I think I'm overwhelmed with good book options.  I have three on the go right now.  I am reading "The Lost Sisters" which is 1.5 in the Folk of the Air series.  Since I know I'm going to read "The Wicked King" I figured I might as well work in it.  It's under 60 pages though so it's gonna be quick.  I am also still working on "The Homecoming" and then there is "The River" which I want to get knocked out of the way.  And oh, there's a fourth.  I have read the first three chapters of "The Dark Game."  I'm hopeless I tell ya.

I got some GREAT review books this week.  I'm really excited about all of these.  "Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass" and "Something Borrowed, Something Mewed" are cozy mysteries and I LOVE the Bethany Blake one so I can't wait.  I've been seeing "The Luminous Dead" and "Wilder Girls" everywhere so I'm happy to jump on those bandwagons.  Finally, I featured "Deception Cove" as a Waiting on Wednesday feature a few weeks back and of course "The Hummingbird Dagger" has Jack the Ripper vibe going on. 

And last but not least I scored some good freebies this week.  I've wanted "Arsenic and the Azaleas" since I spied that cute Basset hiding on the cover.  My shark-loving self had to add "Mega" when I saw it and "Repo Girl" appealed to me because it's a mystery and cars - which I can't help but be drawn too since my dad and grandpa were both mechanics.  

And finally,  I want to send a shout out to Tammy of Books Bones & Buffy for sending me her extra copy of "Pariah."  She knows how much I love this series.  THANKS TAMMY!

Hey guys!  It's me - Booker T!  Boy has it been a while.  Mom has been pretty stingy with computer time for me and Cass lately but I finally just put my paw down, grabbed the computer, and ran upstairs.  So basically I spent a few days under the weather this past week and while doing so, I found some new puppy titles coming out that I can't wait to share with you.  So grab your favorite beverage (mine is water) and read on!

TITLE: Alaskan Catch

TITLE: No Ordinary Dog

I know Mom loves collecting/reading books about service dogs and seriously folks, that pup has the BEST EARS EVER! I wish mine would do that!

So this month Stormi and I chose a book that we've both put off for some time.  It was never intentional, it's just that other books got in the way.  We were both pretty excited for it so read on to hear my thoughts and they jump over to Stormi's at Books, Movies, Reviews! Oh My! and see what she thought.

MY THOUGHTS:  Man, I really don't know where to begin with this one.  I've had so many blogging pals love this one and many have commented they were so excited to see I was finally picking it up.  If you were one of those people, you might want to stop reading.

Okay, you were warned.  "In the Valley of the Sun" really didn't work for me.  Don't get me wrong.  It should have.  I love atmospheric reads and character-driven books.  I'm not a reader who has to have fast and constant action, although I enjoy that too.  I even love nasty, mean vampires so Rue, the mysterious vamp who turns and then haunts Travis should have been one of my favorites.  But nope, didn't like her either.  There were people I enjoyed in this book but they were pretty much limited to Reader, the ranger hunting for Travis and Calhoun, a family friend of Annabelle and Sandy.  Don't even get me started on how much Sandy bothered me.  That kid is destined for issues.

There were a few scenes I did enjoy and I don't have a problem with Davidson's writing.  He is definitely an author I will give another chance.  There was just something about this one.  Now being the snarky individual that I am I want to add that basically one should not "turn" an individual with  as many psychological problems as Travis.  Rue was just begging from trouble.  In addition, Travis is a prime example that not all murderers would make good vampires. 

And warning - rabbit violence.  That's all I'm going to say about that. 

So I'm not going to bother recommending this to people or warning people to stay away from it.  If it's somewhere on your TBR, I say go for it.  Hey, the odds are in your favor because some great reviewers LOVE LOVE LOVE Davidson's novel.  So many in fact that I often questioned what was wrong with me while reading it. 

If you've followed me for a while, you will fully understand when I say "Little Heaven" has been dethroned.

TTT - 10 Favorite Songs From One Of My Favorite Artists

The top 10 weekly meme used to be hosted by The Broke and the Bookish they  handed over the reins to ThatArtsyReaderGirl who can be found HERE.  Each week she will focus on lists which cover various topics related to books and reading.

This week is all about audio and I don't use audiobooks so I'm going the music route and sharing with you my 10 Favorite Songs from one of my favorite artists.....Stevie Nicks!  Come on, you thought it was going to be Prince right?  That's coming in Purple April folks.  I think Stevie is a perfect choice especially since she is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week on March 29th.

 Leather and Lace was our wedding song so it will always hold a dear place in my heart.

Landslide is such a beautiful song and always makes me think of my dad.

Did you know Stand Back was written by Prince? I had to work him in somehow.

Sorcerer was released twice.  Once in 1984 and again in 2001.  Sheryl Crow plays background guitar.

I remember hearing Rhiannon for the first time when I was on one of my first dates with Mr. Barb playing pool.  We were married about 9  months afterwards and this year will be our 28th anniversary.  So much for long courtships huh?

Gold Dust Woman was written by Nicks and originally performed by Fleetwood Mac.  It's been on several of her solo albums since its release in 1977.  Nicks has since said "gold dust woman" is a reference to cocaine.

A lesser known song, Nightbird has always been one of my faves.  It contains one of my favorite lyrics as well "And the summer became the fall, I was not ready for the winter, It makes no difference at all, 'Cause I wear boots all summer long."

 John Cocteau's 1946 french film Beauty and the Beast is one of Stevie's favorite films and the inspiration for this song.

Gypsy was written in 1979 by Nicks for Fleetwood Mac.  

Almost everyone has at least heard Dreams.  Such a classic that has actually been covered by several different artist including Bastille and The Coors.

So there you have it.  A little something different for today's post.  I would say that if Prince is my favorite male artist, Stevie is the female equivalent.  So are you a Nicks or Fleetwood Mac fan?  Will you be watching the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction?

I Guess I'm Just Trash for Riverdale

TITLE: Riverdale: The Day Before

MY THOUGHTS: I am such a sucker for anything "dark" Riverdale so when I saw this at WalMart a few months ago, there was no doubt it was going home with me.  Basically "Riverdale: The Day Before" is just that.  The day before the first season of the hit show happens - or more like a few days.  There are chapters told from the POV of all the characters and I have to admit they made me love Jughead ever more, question why Archie ever thought it was a good idea to have an affair with his teacher, and make Veronica even more unlikable - at least in the beginning.  I do question Betty doing an internship with a magazine in California because I don't know that I've ever heard anything about that in the TV show.

There is really no deep plot to this book and if you don't like the series, I can't really recommend you pick it up. It was a entertaining way to kill a few hours and I see there is a second one coming out soon that happens after the whole Black Hood incident.  And yep, I'll probably be trash for that one as well.

What's Happening...(03-23-19)

I can't believe that March is almost over.  March Madness has started and while I'm not a huge college basketball fan Mr. Barb and I always play a bracket against each other.  After the first round, we've each won 24 games.  I've already done better this year than last.

So hold on for a vent.  Mr. Barb's gall bladder has healed nicely and he has been able to eat some foods he has missed without an issue.  That's all great but darn it, he's hurt his neck and shoulder muscles somehow and then made the injury worse by using too much heat.  We went to a medical express place today and he got a prescription which will hopefully help but man, I'm about to either run away from home for a week (and take the dogs - maybe) or lock myself in a room and ignore everyone.  I'm a caretaker by nature but between my Mom and her dating madness, Mr. Barb and Gpa, I'm running on fumes!  Okay, rant over and I still love them all.  

We've not found too many new movies to watch this week so we started watching an older series - Sons of Anarchy.  We really only watched the last 3 or so seasons so we missed a lot.  It's giving us something to fill the time during the evenings when we would normally stream new releases.  Of course Season 2 of Sabrina starts in 2 week and next week Season 3 of Santa Clarita Diet starts so I'm excited about that.

I've got two books I'm focusing on this weekend.  Stormi and I have both started out second buddy read of the month, "In the Valley of the Sun," which I'm about 23% into and then I'm about 24% into "The Homecoming" by Andrew Pyper.  I'm actually liking "The Homecoming" better at this point but there's still plenty of book left in both so my opinion may change.

I managed to pick up two holds from my not-so-local library (which is still less than 5 miles away) on Thursday.  I can't wait to pick up "A Curse So Dark and Lovely" especially since Stormi really liked it and it is a Beauty and the Beast retelling.  I am also curious about "The Dead Queens Club" since it's a mix of Mean Girls and The Tudors. 

And finally, I grabbed a few books from Penguin's First to Read program the past few weeks.  I'm excited for them all but don't know when I'll find time to read them.  But I will!  "The Den" was already on my wishlist so I couldn't resist.  I'm not sure I'll like it but it's fairly short so we will see. "Waiting for Tom Hanks" is not a type of book you normally see here but I do have a fondness for the man and grew up with his rom-coms in the 90's so I do think I'll enjoy it quite a bit.  "The Affair of the Mysterious Letter" has tentacles on the cover so need I say more?  And finally, I've been wanting an early copy of "The Department of Sensitive Crimes" so when I saw my chance I took it.

So I hope you all got lots of good books this week so you can share them with me.  I may need more if I plan an escape.  Of course, I may need bail money too :)

Creepy Old House + New Pregnancy = Disaster

TITLE: The Chrysalis

Then he finds the thing in the basement. It makes him feel like a winner even as it scrambles his senses. A new job soon has him raking in the big bucks--enough that Jenny can start making her entrepreneurial dreams come true. 

The Deckers' dream home conceals more than one deadly secret. As Tom's obsession with the basement grows, Jenny realizes that to save her family, she must expose everything. Before it destroys them all. 

No one ever really wants to grow up...but sometimes behaving like an adult is the only way to survive. 

MY THOUGHTS: I've basically wanted to read this book since it first came out so I finally cracked down and decided to make time for it.  Boy am I glad that I did. So Tom and Jenny are your basic millenials.  Tom is a bartender and Jenny basically hangs out with him at the bar when not working her job as a personal trainer.  One day they receive a notice that their rent is increasing and they will no longer be able to afford it.  They start house hunting and are shocked when they score a huge old house outside city limits.  Soon after moving in, Jenny learns she is pregnant and both of them are forced to grow up.  However, the glowing blob in the basement has other ideas.

I really enjoyed "The Chrysalis" and pretty much read it in a day.  Every time I put it down, I would quickly pick it back up and convince myself I'd read just one more chapter.  I don't know that I ever fell in love with either Jenny or Tom as characters, but they were likable and I wanted to find out what was happening to them.  As the story unfolds, Tom's obsession with the chrysalis he discovers in the basement takes over and boy does it take a toll on the relationship.  Add that to the red stain on the kitchen floor which never quite disappears and you just know the book is headed down a road toward disaster.

"The Chrysalis" isn't what I expected.  Initially I thought it was a haunted house tale but instead I ended up with more of a haunted individuals tale.  And it worked.  I was even pleased with the ending and was glad that the author wasn't afraid to take some chances.  I will warn people who have little tolerance for whiny character that they might find Tom annoying.  When he basically had what equates to a mid-life crisis because he had to get a full-time job and cut his hair, I felt no sympathy.  However, on the whole, I think any horror lover might want to give this book a try.  In addition, I think someone new to horror might even like this because I kind of consider it "horror-lite."

2 Bloggers 1 Series - Magic Strikes Review

I am pleased to announce that my and Stormi's experiment into buddy reading a series has been going very successfully.  We both are enjoying the series we picked and are already looking ahead to 2020 (although neither of us can believe we were talking 2020).  This month we read "Magic Strikes," the third book in the Kate Daniels series.  Read on for my specific thoughts and then make sure to hop over to Stormi's at  Books, Movies, Reviews! TITLE: Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels #3)

AUTHOR: Ilona Andrews

MY THOUGHTS: So this installment throws us into an illegal underground fighting tournament, the Midnight Games.  Kate ends up attending with Saiman to help get Derek out of some trouble and has no idea for the epic crap-storm it sets off.  Derek is critically wounded and Kate and some other rogue shifters end up going underground to find out what is going on and help Derek before Curran finds out.

I can't stress enough how much I am enjoying this series.  Everyone keeps telling me the books just keep getting better and better and there are absolutely right.  So far all of the various plots have been action packed and besides Kate and Curran, there are so many side characters to love.  I'm really growing quite attached to Julie, Derek, Andrea and Raphael - even Dr. Doolittle.  Now of course that's not to say that I don't love Kate and Curran - together and individually.  Kate is smart, strong and snarky, and boy do I love snark.  Curran is strong, sexy and bossy.  Together they are like a powder keg and I am thoroughly enjoying the hate-to-love trope we have going on.

 Now honestly, I've never gotten on the whole book-boyfriend train.  I kind of feel like I'm past that point in my life.  There are several characters in books I would find myself attracted to in the real world if they existed and I wasn't happily married.  That being said, those that know me will not be pressed to understand that Curran comes pretty close to a book boyfriend.  I mean, seriously, he has fur and paws.  What more could I ask for?  (well, maybe a wolf instead of a lion but hey, you can't be picky). 

So overall, yes, I loved every minute of reading "Magic Strikes."  I've given all the books I've read so far 4/5 paws and this one is no different.  I kind of find myself wondering what will make a 5/5 paw rating for me with these books but all I can say is my gut is telling me I will just know.

This week we are sharing books on our Spring TBR.  Well, I love making lists and my TBR is constantly growing, evolving and changing so I wanted too mix this up a bit.  I'm gonna share with you 10 newer releases and then 10 backlist books I need to make time for as well.  

As usual, you will see a more than average amount of dog books and horror.

So I think this is a nice variety of horror, mystery, dogs and science fiction.  Hopefully I will get to some of them this spring.

Spring Into Horror Readathon 2019

So last year was the first year I participated in the Spring Into Horror Readathon and had a lot of fun so when I saw the post for it again this year, it was really a no-brainer to jump on board.  I mean really, like I need an excuse to read horror anyway and it's fun to see what everyone else is picking up.  You can find the complete explanation and rules HERE so if you too are interested, then check it out.  As you can see, this is being hosted by Seasons of Reading.

I'm only sharing three titles which I would like to complete horror-wise in April.  I know I have several other books I need to get but I'd be thrilled to get these horror titles knocked off the stack!

So I've been meaning to read "NOS4A2" for years and finally feel like I have the motivation I need as I want to read it before the AMC series starts this summer.  I am part of a blog tour for "The Dark Game" the middle of April so I know I have to get that one done.  And finally, I'm on my second go-around with getting "Strange Ink" at the library and I'm sure they might like to have it back for more than a week at a time.
