FROM GOODREADS: A story of girl meets bear.
Nora has bad luck with men. When she meets an (actual) bear on a hike in the Los Angeles hills, he turns out to be the best romantic partner she’s ever had! He’s considerate, he’s sweet, he takes care of her. But he’s a bear, and winning over her friends and family is difficult. Not to mention he has to hibernate all winter. Can true love conquer all?

MY THOUGHTS: I do tend to like the odd title now and then so when I saw this graphic novel is the "new" section at my local library, I couldn't resist. In the beginning Nora is in a very bad relationship. Well, it's not so much bad as it is he's an idiot. They go camping one weekend and on the trip, she meets Bear. She leaves and returns home but when the local campground catches fire, Bear shows up on her porch.
Bear turns out to be everything Nora wants. He's attentive, hard working and he loves her cat. He also likes to cuddle. There only a few problems. She has to convince her parents and friends that Bear is the perfect "man" for her and she also has to deal with that little problem known as hibernation.
This book is so far fetched yet I found it fun. I couldn't help root for Bear and if there's some deep dark meaning beneath the surface, I really didn't find it. However, the book does showcase individuality, self love and acceptance so I guess maybe there is a deeper meaning. I really wanted Nora to get her happy ending. I also found the artwork to be fun. It was bright and colorful and really meshed well with the outlandish subject matter.
I doubt there will be a sequel but if there is, I'd probably pick it up. I wonder how Nora and Bear will deal with the concept of kids and family. If I were Nora, I'd consider a surrogate because honestly, the idea of cubs appeals to me much more than the idea of kids anyway.
RATING: 3 PAWS
Oh my, I am not sure what to make of this. I can definitely see that it's a fun read, but I am also stuck on the bear!
ReplyDeleteIt was kind of hard to get over the fact that yea, she was living with/dating/and sleeping with a bear.
DeleteHahaha lol what :D I opened your blog, and I'm like, I HAVE TO read this review :D :D it looks adorable, although decidedly weird :D
ReplyDeleteThe artwork made it super cute. Her friends were really funny too.
DeleteThis sounds a little strange, but it's actually a fun idea! And I like the artwork on the cover😁
ReplyDeleteYea, so colorful and fun. But yes, also VERY strange.
DeleteI love impulse reads, especially when they turn out so enjoyable.

Yea, every time I go to the library I always try to grab at least one impulse read. I've found some true gems that way.
DeleteA bit odd sounding and probably not one for me although I loved that the character is called Nora - it was my gran's name.
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
I think Nora is such a pretty name...and perhaps why I've been on such a kick with Nora Jones music lately.
DeleteI can see why you couldn't resist giving this one a read. I'd've checked it out, too. :D
ReplyDeleteI love that you would have grabbed it also.
DeleteThis definitely sounds like an odd one. It does, despite it's unconventionality, sound fun. Looks like you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteYes I did. Thanks!
DeleteThis one is strange enough that I would have to pick it up as well. Glad it turned out well for you.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you just have to embrace the strange.
DeleteI remember seeing this book on NG, I think, and almost wanting to read it cuz it looks so strange that it's fun lol. Glad it was an enjoyable read! And yeah, cubs would be more appealing to me than kids too lol.
ReplyDeleteCubs all the way!
DeleteThis sounds really fun, Barb. I didn't realize at first it was a graphic novel and wasn't sure it would work, but as a graphic novel I think it probably does! I don't often read graphic novels since I don't always understand them...lol. But this sounds like a good one. I like the cover!
ReplyDeleteYea, I don't think it could have worked any other way - without being super odd.
DeleteI'd probably root for the bear-he sounds like a better bet than any man I was ever involved with! Go Bear!
ReplyDeleteI love it! You made my morning :)
DeleteI like weird things like this, ha ha. If I see it around anywhere, I'm going to pick it up and give it a whirl. 🐻
ReplyDeleteYay! I love it when I can sway people to read "weird" books.
