TITLE: Betrayals (Cainsville #4)
AUTHOR: Kelley Armstrong
PUBLISHER: Sphere
PUBLISHING DATE: August 9, 2016
FROM GOODREADS: When Olivia's life
exploded--after she found out she was not the adopted child of a
privileged Chicago family but of a notorious pair of convicted serial
killers--she found a refuge in the secluded but oddly welcoming town of
Cainsville, Illinois. Working with Gabriel Walsh, a fiendishly
successful criminal lawyer with links to the town, she discovered the
truth about her parents' crimes in an investigation that also revealed
the darker forces at work in the place that had offered her a haven. As
if that wasn't enough, she also found out that she, Gabriel and her
biker boyfriend Ricky were not caught in an ordinary sort of love
triangle, but were hereditary actors in an ancient drama in which the
elders of Cainsville and the mysterious Huntsmen who opposed them had a
huge stake.
Now someone is killing street kids in the city, and
the police have tied Ricky to the crimes. Setting out with Gabriel's
help to clear Ricky's name, Olivia once again finds her own life at
risk. Soon the three are tangled in a web of betrayals that threatens
their uneasy equilibrium and is pushing them toward a hard choice:
either they fulfill their destinies by trusting each other and staying
true to their real bonds, or they succumb to the extraordinary forces
trying to win an eternal war by tearing them apart.
MY THOUGHTS:
I
literally couldn't get enough of this book over the weekend and now I'm
so bummed that it's finished. I can honestly say I have never disliked a
Kelley Armstrong book. Of course I've never read her YA stuff, and I
haven't started "The City of the Lost" and hey, I also need to pick up
the Nadia Stafford series (oh my gosh, how does this woman write so
much?????), but I am current on the Cainsville series and I've read all
of the Women of the Otherworld series so that's saying something.
Once
again Armstrong grabbed hold of me and pulled me into the Cainsville
world. Lamiae are turning up dead in the city of Chicago and once
Olivia's beau Ricky is implicated in the mess somehow, she, along with
him and Gabriel, set out to find out what is going on. In my opinion,
this book introduces us to the supernatural elements of the story more
than its predecessors. There is a lot of Fae folklore to explore in
"Betrayals" and we learn more about The Hunt and the Hounds (thus the
awesome dog on the front). All the main characters also learn more about
their destinies in this mixed up fae world.
I love love love the
characters in this book. And even though this book features a love
triangle which usually annoys the heck out of me, Armstrong does it
SOOOOO well. The relationships between Ricky, Gabriel and Olivia only
continue to evolve and because there is so much folklore and history
embedded in the triangle, it really makes so much since that it exists.
I
don't want to give too much away because you really need to read the
first three books in order to have an understanding of this one. And by
the way, if you haven't already started this series, why not????? Even
though I like Ricky, I LOVE Gabriel and after reading this am all the
more convinced that Gabriel and Olivia belong together. However, I guess
like everyone else I'm going to have to wait a long, painful year to
find out what eventually happens.
If you love Anne Bishop's
Others series, I think picking this one up is a no-brainer. And Kelly,
if you ever see this review by chance, can I just say TEAM GABRIEL
please!!!!!
RATING: 5 PAWS
I just read the first one recently, and I have to admit, the idea of a love triangle just robbed me of all the excitement around it. I've been tossing up whether to go back to it. Hm. Your review is making my decision harder! :)
ReplyDeleteI would say give book 2 a chance. There is so much legend and lore around why the triangle exists that if I recall, isn't explained until further in the series. I recall feeling the way you did as well initially.
DeleteI really need to read this author and this series is one I want really bad. The book gods need to send me a gift card so I can...lol. I have read one of her YA books and it was okay but then it got overshadowed by all my other books that I forgot to continue it...lol. I watched Bitten on Syfy and loved it so I got the first book Bitten in the Otherworld series but I just haven't read it...lol. I bad. :( :)
ReplyDeleteHey, if COYER does the Secret Elf thing again, now you know what to ask for :)
DeleteI am obsessed with Kelley Armstrong. Love everything she writes. I love this series so much. Definitely read City of the Lost. It was so good.
