What's Happening at the Farm (01-05-19)

So I'm doing things a tad bit differently this year and will be combining all of my regular weekend posts.  This will enable me to add more content on Fridays and it is just starting to make more sense.  I'll still be linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga's Reviews and Sunday Post at Caffeinated Reviewer.  Both blogs are awesome so make sure you check them out.

So I've been enjoying my second week of vacation and really need to get a few posts done before I start back to work Monday.  We had a great holiday and I'd like to say we watched some great movies but other than the new Halloween, there's not been much to see.  I will say that I did enjoy it and it was nice to see Jamie Lee Curtis take on her iconic role once again.  The ending does leave me wondering though if Michael Myers is in fact truly dead - again.  I've also been gaming some and completely started and finished "Until Dawn" and am now working on "Shadow of the Tomb Raider."  I forgot how much fun it was to kill people 😏

The boys are doing fine but they've been spoiled with having someone home with them most of the time.  The weather has been fairly good though so they have been enjoying the outside some.  I have been doing some reading and managed to finish a couple of books before the year ended.  All of the reviews are up except for one so watch for it Monday - it's a good one.  I started "The Passage" New Year's Day and am really liking it but it's so dense that I feel like I'm not making progress.  I'm going to take a break from it this weekend and try to work something else in. I think I'll squeeze in "And the Ocean Was Our Sky."  It's a library book and fairly short - plus the art is awesome.

And finally I did get a couple of books for review this week.  "Never Contented Things" is a book I featured on Can't Wait Wednesday a few months back so I'm thrilled for it.  And Flame Tree Press, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite publishers, sent me copies of "Will Haunt You," "Second Lives" and "The Dark Game."

So how was your week?  Anything excited and did you add any new books for this brand new year???

  1. I read the blurb on Janz's The Dark Game. It sounds terrifying!

  2. I'm really keen to get my hands on the Halloween film as soon as possible as I alreay have the companion novel! Glad to hear that the boys are doing well. I'm not allowing myself to add any more than three books to my weekend post so I have a chance to keep reducing the pile a little each week-let me see how long that lasts!

    1. That's a great idea. Three is a good number. You have more restraint that I do :)

  3. I have never seen any of the Halloween movies! Crazy huh? The only scary movies I have seen is the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. They terrified me as a kid. Glad you had a great break. I had to go back to work on Thursday. It was exhausting! Good luck next week.

    1. Those Elm Street movies were quite terrifying back then. We had a girl in my high school class who was rather prissy and scared easily and she lived on Elm Street so one night at midnight, a group of us walked to her house and started jumping rope in the street outside her window and singing the Freddie song. Yes, it was kind of mean but it was hilarious!

  8. My pups have been spoiled by having us home, too. I'm starting to feel guilty about going back to work Monday. I hope you wind up loving The Passage. I thought it was so good!

    1. I am loving it so far but am mixing other books in with it or else my January wrap up would be mighty short.

  9. I ended up with two weeks off for the holidays. My boss had company come in town and they went to the hunting camp so I got the rest of this week off. Nice surprise but I'm ready for work again. Getting lazy and restless. LOL My dog loves it though. He's been getting lots of extra treats. The rascal follows me to the kitchen and sits there, waiting for me to reach in the treat jar. Then he pulls the same thing with my son. LOL

  10. I haven't had a chance to see the new Halloween movie, but I heard it was wonderful having Jamie Lee Curtis again. My fur babies are use to having someone home with them all the time, when I do leave and can't take them I usually turn on the radio for them. Have a lovely week ahead.

    1. We always leave a TV on for ours. I think they enjoy the extra noise.

  11. I've seen Never Contented Things around a lot, I confess I'm kinda curious though I did not have much luck with the last book I read by the author. I'll keep an eye out for your review!

  12. Happy New Year! It sounds like you had a very nice holiday - and that is so necessary every now and then, isn't it?
I enjoy combining my weekend post into one as well - not that we always post something on the 'free' day, but it just makes more sense to me.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading!

  13. I haven't seen the new Halloween movie yet. There really haven't been too many movies lately that I really want to see. Your books look good. I hope you enjoy them. Have a great week!

  14. I love the sound of Never Contented Things and I think I saw it on your WOW or someones since I now want to read it. :)
I binge watched everything I have seen already, I was hoping to start something new, only MST3K new one. I had started before Christmas and finished it today. Now I want to get into some new series.

I hope you have a great week, Barb! Happy Reading! xx

    1. I spent Sunday catching up on Riverdale and only have one more episode until I'm done. I also see a new season of Black Lake started on Shudder. I like that but it's foreign and subtitled so I actually have to pay attention when watching it.

  17. Lots of bloggers do multiple memes and features on their weekend posts now. I think it's more common than not, and it certainty saves some time. 👍✨

I'm glad the boys are doing well, and that you all had good holidays. Happy New Year. 🎉

You know, I have only seen the first Halloween! 😱 How many did there end up being?

    1. I'm not even sure. And then Rob Zombie threw a wrench in things by remaking 2 of them so I really got lost. His versions were awesome though!

  18. Glad to hear you've been enjoying your vacation! I started "The Passage" New Year's Day too! I started it two years ago but got distracted with something else but I do want to read it before the shows stars! I agree it's dense!

  19. I am glad you had a nice time off. I know my cats will likely be unhappy with us now that my daughter is back in school and the last of our house guests are gone. They like having someone there all day.

I feel like I need to make time for The Passage soon. I hope you end up loving it, Barb. I know the size intimidates me a bit.

Enjoy your new books, and have a great week! Happy Reading!

    1. They are very slasher and we usually stay away from that type of horror a lot but they don't cross over to what Mr. Barb calls "Slasher Porn" so we do tend to enjoy them.

  22. Uh I don't watch or read horror. BUT Audible is currently giving away The Passage by Justin Cronin for free. I just grabbed it, so if you like audio I would do it. If you don't have Audible, you would probably create an account and it would be your freebie. You could also get something else as a freebie and then grab this one for free. You can always cancel after 30 days and you'd still have the 2 free audios. I posted the deal link on Books of My Heart facebook page. (I'm not an affiliate, I get nothing from this) I'm glad you had a nice holiday and hope for some great reads in the new year! Anne - Books of My Heart

    1. Thanks for the head's up. While categorized as horror, I think non-horror readers could easily read The Passage (at least I do 300 pages in). It reads a lot like a thriller.
