Books to Bark & Crow About - Cass Is In the House!

So hello everybody!  Cass here.  I'm a tad nervous because this is my first post all by myself.  As you can imagine, I'm missing my big brother Booker T something fierce but I promised him I'd take care of Mom and Dad and he handed the blogging reins over to me when he passed so I want to make him proud.

I scoured the internet and I think I found some good cozy mysteries for you guys.  Since summer is coming up, I figured some of you might like to sit by the pool (I wish - hey Mom, I want a pool!), lounge on the porch or have a beverage of choice (is there anything other than water?) while delving into a quaint new mystery.  So here's some I found.

TITLE: Needled to Death (A Helping Hands Mystery)
AUTHOR: Annelise Ryan
PUBLISHING DATE: July 30, 2019

SYNOPSIS: As a colleague of deputy coroner Mattie Winston, social worker Clothilde “Hildy” Schneider is no stranger to unsolved murders at Sorenson General Hospital. Except this time, it’s up to her to crack the case . . .

Motivated by her own difficult past, Hildy has an unparalleled commitment to supporting troubled clients through grief and addiction in Sorenson, Wisconsin. But when a distraught group therapy member reveals disturbing details about her late son’s potential murder, Hildy goes from dedicated mental health professional to in-over-her-head amateur sleuth . . .

Alongside her loyal therapy Golden Retriever, Hildy stumbles through incriminating clues—and an unlikely partnership with Detective Bob Richmond, the irresistibly headstrong cop who shares her passion for helping others. With signs of foul play surfacing all over town, can Hildy and Detective Richmond pinpoint the deadly traits of a sharp-witted killer before another seat gets filled at grief therapy?

Mom loves a good cozy and the fact that this one has a therapy dog is definitely a plus!

TITLE: Pit & Miss Murder (Barkside of the Moon #4)
AUTHOR: Renee George
PUBLISHING DATE:  May 21, 2019

SYNOPSIS: When Lily Mason's uncle is accused of murdering a prominent Moonrise citizen, the amateur detective and her loyal pit bull Smooshie must dig out the truth and find the real killer.

Integrating isn't easy for a shifter in an all human town, but Lily Mason is finally making it work. She has love in her life, enjoys a great job, attends community college, and best of all, her fixer-upper house is nearly livable. She couldn't be happier.

Until her Uncle Buzz is accused of murder. A prominent member of the community has been found murdered in the parking lot of her uncle's cafe,The Cat's Meow. And thanks to a contentious relationship with the victim, Uncle Buzz is the number one suspect.

Now Lily, Smooshie, and the Moonrise gang must solve the murder before Lily's only family ends up behind bars.

Everyone knows Smooshie is my book girlfriend and Mom loves this series. It comes out soon so I hope she can read it and it will cheer her up some.

TITLE: What's Bred in the Bone (XK9 Bones Trilogy #1)
AUTHOR: Jan S. Gephardt
PUBLISHING DATE: May 22, 2019

SYNOPSIS: XK9 Rex is a dog who thinks too much—and it could get him killed.

He and his Packmates were bio-engineered and cyber-enhanced to be the most advanced forensic tools available to law enforcement. Transplanted to a habitat space station in the Human Diaspora and separated from his Packmates, Rex has only his human partner Charlie to depend on. Then Rex’s rookie mistake during a catastrophic explosion on the space dock sends Charlie to the ICU.

Now Rex is truly all alone. Without Charlie, he’s sidelined. Written off by the humans. But his keen senses picked up a vital clue on the space dock that the investigation needs know. He must get the humans to listen somehow!

Rex doesn’t realize that larger forces are at work. The XK9s are more than just forensic tools, and they’re more than their new owners, the Orangeboro Police Department, ever bargained for. When Rex accidentally unmasks a disturbing secret, he blows open an international conspiracy that could destabilize the entire System—and places himself, his Pack, and all XK9s everywhere in mortal peril.

This is a mix of science fiction and canines and for some reason, I found it really interesting. And since I love Star Wars, I may convince Mom to give this one a chance.

So there you have it guys.  I think I found some good books and hopefully made my brother proud!

  1. Hi Cass! I know you've had a rough few weeks, but you are such a good boy and I'm glad you're helping out with the blog with these doggie book recommendations. The last one I would never have pegged as something that would interest me based on the cover, but the publisher description sounds awesome and I do want to read more canines in space books after Greg Van Eekhout's Voyage of the Dogs!
