Book Discussion - Booksnake I Hate You!

Well once again it's time for another book discussion here at Booker T's Farm.  And this time the topic is something that has been on my mind for a while.  I don't know what else to say except

BOOKSNAKE I HATE YOU!

It seems like for the past few years ago, there has been a growing trend in book covers, especially YA.  And I affectionately, or as you may soon learn, not so affectionately, call Booksnake.  Personally, I'm terrified of snakes.  When I was young, maybe 4 or 5, I stepped on one.  I didn't kill him and he didn't kill me so we called it even (of course it was green snake so technically it couldn't have killed me but a heart attack is a heart attack.  And then a few years back, one holiday season, we had some neighbors who were struggling.  We decided to surprise them with some food and things and when I took it over, the woman opened the door with a ball python wrapped around her shoulders.  I screamed, dropped the food and ran.  Boy was I glad when they moved. And now, my favorite hobby is being infested.

First they started out small.  I believe there are tiny snakes on the cover of each book in this series.  I have never read them but really do want to someday because I've heard how dark it it.

Then Booksnake started to grow.  You can see him getting bigger here.  I actually read this book and this chick on the cover had snakes growing out of her hair.  I managed to read it and actually enjoyed it (Medusa retelling - yea, she's not my favorite person either, imagine that).

Then apparently Booksnake grew even bigger.  And apparently he has siblings because they all started looking the same!  I actually bought Ninth House and yep, it's still in the box, and I'd like to read the other two as well.

And finally, I think the new trend is Albino Booksnake.

Seriously, all kidding aside.  I'm not trying to offend anyone who like snakes.  I know some people dearly love them.  Honestly, I actually wish I wasn't so terrified.  I've done somewhat better with it as I've gotten older but not much.  So for now, I'll not-so-patiently wait for the trend to die.  And in the meantime, I'll keep looking for cute furry animals on book covers which will always make me happy.

Is there anything on book covers you despise?

  1. Funny you should make this post, because this year I've noticed there have been an explosion of snakes on covers of books too! They definitely weren't as common before, and I know because not long ago there was a Friday Face-off where the theme was snakes and I had a trouble finding covers to feature. It would not have been a problem in 2019, that's for sure! A few more I can think of just off the top of my that aren't on your list are Dark Age by Pierce Brown, The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman, and Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin.

    1. Yea, for some reason I always forget The Remaking even though I just read it. It's easy with the physical book to see it consists of film which makes me forget it's a snake :) Also the Serpent & Dove one blends in much better.

  2. I had no idea that there were snakes on the cover of Three Dark Crowns but there they are! I am with you. I avoid books that have snakes on the covers but have bought a few recently since you can't seem to avoid it. I bought hardcovers though so I can remove the jacket and not look at the snake while I am reading the book. I'll put it back on when I'm done.

I grew up in the country and we had a lot of snakes. I wish my parents had taught me how to tell the difference between good and bad snakes but they went with all snakes are evil. We did have a large copperhead in our front yard but most were not dangerous unless you want to count my heart attacks. I did have a snake coiled up and ready to strike once and my dog put herself between me and the snake. I only realized it was there because of how she was acting. Tiger was a very good girl. You can see why I grew up knowing dogs were good and snakes were bad.

    1. Awww, very smart doggy. I always said they didn't have to strike me to kill me because just seeing one close up gives me a heart attack.

  3. Spiders! I always feel that if there is a spider on the cover it could crawl onto my hand while I'm reading it! A big huge mutant spider on the cover is ok because it isn't real but realistic spiders really bother me!

    1. I've never been bad with spiders although Mr. Barb is and once sprayed one with an entire bottle of hairspray so he wouldn't have to get close.

  4. This post is so funny! Sorry, it's probably not funny to you. Yes, this was definitely the year of the snake cover. I wonder what next year will be? For me, I don't want to see anything with ants on it. My hatred of ants goes very deep...

    1. Ants huh? Some of them can be real pests and I'm glad I've not ran into any of the stinking kind. I also kind of wonder what next year's trend will be.

  5. The snake trend is a bit creepy for me, too. I live in the woods, so snakes are a regular occurrence for me. But, the more I see them, the more nightmares I'm bound to have.

    1. Yes, nightmares would abound for me too! Stay safe.

  6. There really are a lot of YA books with snakes on the covers, aren't there? Huh. Who knew.

    1. Me too. I remember my Dad used to tell me they were more scared of me than I was of them - I STILL doubt that.

  8. I'm the same with spiders. Even the tiniest ones make my skin crawl. Though I don't run screaming from them now that I'm older. LOL We have some huge spiders here in the south and I'm always watching for them whenever I go outside. Got a lot of snakes too. Some of them are also huge. I've made it a point to learn how to recognize the deadly ones.

  9. I hate bare-chested muscle men on book covers. Ha! I really do. It's even worse if they have a beard. 😛

I had a pet corn snake when I was little, so I guess that kept me from having a fear of snakes, well... except for venomous snakes... yeah, because who wants to get bitten and be in excruciating pain and/or die. Ha ha. 🐍

I guess tarantulas and scorpions would be my run away screaming encounter. I don't like them on books either. 😱

The cover for King of the Rising is beautiful. 😍

    1. Yes dying is quite an awful side effect. You know what, I can't stand bare-chested me on covers either! Beards don't bother me but too many of them give me Fabio flashbacks!

  10. Hahaha! I knew where you were going to go with this. It's so true. The book snake is hot right now. I hadn't thought about people who are terrified of snakes. I'd die if the book spider became a thing.

    1. I know. It's totally not fair to us snake fearing people!

  11. LOL! I love this. I'm not a huge fan of snakes either. Spiders get me more though... eek!
