Well Stormi and I did it!  We finished the Hope's Crossing series.  Go us!  It really feels good to have this accomplishment under my belt and for the most part, this one was a great one.  I will say it still isn't quite Virgin River, but if you love those books or shows (and they are two different things altogether), then this is a series you need to check out as well.  Read on for my thoughts on this last one and then hop over to Storm Reads to see what Stormi had to say.

TITLE: All is Bright Hope's Crossing #8)

MY THOUGHTS: It is so nice to have this series finally wrapped up although I know there is a companion series just waiting on my horizon.  Also, there is a pretty big jump in time between books six and seven, 8 years to be exact, and I believe the author did this one because her fans kept begging for a conclusion to Sage's story.  

Sage is heavily into her architectural career and is finally being recognized for her own accomplishments and not just the daughter of a world-renowned architect.  She is coming home to Hope's Crossing for the holidays and to put the final touches on a massive remodel she is completing for baseball star, Mason Tucker, and his daughter.  Mason's career ended when his family went down in a tragic plane accident which killed his wife and left him facing years of rehab and life adjustments. The same accident also made him a single father.  

Mason and Sage but heads from day one and it's obvious to everyone, even them I think, where it is headed.  Mason has some pretty heavy baggage and Sage is afraid to commit to someone who is settling down permanently in Hope's Crossing as she fears it will only lead to heartache.  As both characters' walls come down, sparks continue to ignite, but will either admit they see a future in each other?

I loved Sage from book one and I liked Mason, although he was pretty quick to judge Sage for some past decisions when he clearly did not have all the facts.  And of course, it didn't hurt that he had an adorable daughter. Surprisingly enough, I'm not a huge fan of kids in books (unless they are of the evil, horror genetics) but the kids in this series really do add a lot to them. Also, as a bonus, there is a little side story included in this one featuring Taryn and Charlie, who we met in a previous installment when they were teens.

This was a wonderful book to pick up during a July heatwave.  I was hoping it would help me channel feeling cooler and while I don't think that happened, it did allow me to forget about the outside for a while.  So long Hope's Crossing, I will miss you!

One more down and only one more left!  Stormi and I decided to read the next installment of Hope's Crossing this month as it leaves us with only one left.  That one happens to be a Christmas title, so we decided to celebrate Christmas in July next month with it.  So read on for my thoughts on this one and then hop over to Storm Reads to see what Stormi had to say.

After all, she'd managed to resist the handsome fire chief once before, but clearly the embers of their attraction are still smoldering…

MY THOUGHTS: While this book definitely wasn't my favorite of the series, it is still a strong contender and overall, I enjoyed Lucy and Brandon's story.

Lucy has lost her hi-tech job and returned to Hope's Crossing to get things back on track.  She inherited her Aunt's home when she recently passed and she plan on turning it into a bed and breakfast, a dream of both her aunt and cousin.  While Lucy couldn't wait to leave Hope's Crossing when she was young, she finds some comfort she didn't expect coming back.  However, she has to deal with Brandon. Brandon broke her heart when she was a teen and married her cousin.  When her cousin passed it childbirth, it left Brandon alone to raise the two remaining children.  He and Lucy never got along during his marriage but of course she wants to spend more time with the kids and that means seeing more of Brandon as well.

Brandon is one of the brothers of the large Caine family who plays a big role in this series.  Thus, seeing him also meant getting glimpses of other past characters as well.  While I felt this this story both dragged out in places and then rushed the romance too fast, it was still a quick read. I enjoyed the kids as well which isn't always the case in books.  

One extra thing I can't forget is that Lucy, Brandon and the kids end up rescuing two puppies from a dumpster one evening.  When it happens, Lucy has her troublesome young sister staying with her for a few weeks which was rocky to say the least.  But each family takes a puppy, and these cute balls of fur end up bring everyone closer together.

It's nice to be almost done with another series, although this one does have another spin-off series which ties in.  After a short break, I'm sure you'll eventually see me reviewing that one as well.  If you love small-town low-spice romances and family drama, this is assuredly a series to consider picking up.

2 Bloggers 1 Series - Christmas in Snowflake Canyon

 

Stormi and I had so much fun last month continuing on with the Hope's Crossing series, that we decided to do the same this month. Actually, I was able to fit this installment in as my last read of January and since it was Christmas themed, I'm glad I did.  It also helped that I was housebound due to a snow/ice storm. MY THOUGHTS: This series has turned into a real comfort read.  I know when I pick one up, I'll end up flying through it which is probably one main reason I decided to quickly work it into my January reads. 

Genevieve Beaumont definitely has a rep in Hope's Crossing.  Not only is her family pretentious and full of themselves, in one of the earlier books Genevieve was the bridezilla from hell. After her engagement fell apart, she ran off to Paris to live the highlife.  However, her parents think she needs to grow up and stop living off her trust fund, so she is summoned back to Hope's Crossing.  After being given yet another ultimatum by her father, she goes to the local bar to let off some stream.  She ends up punching an assistant prosecutor in the face for playing too many Christmas songs.  

It's a rare night out for Dylan Caine.  He prefers to stay holed up in his cabin with his dog ever since getting injured in the Army and coming home.  He is still learning to function well with the loss of an eye and an arm, and he carries the weight of what happened on his shoulders. He intervenes in the barfight and both he and Gen get arrested.  They both manage to get off on community service and are sentenced 100 hours at Warrior's Hope, a new rehab venture run by Dylan's sister and her fiancé.  Exactly where Dylan doesn't want to be.

Although Dylan and Gen are the unlikeliest of couples, I loved seeing their friendship and subsequent feelings for each other develop.  Gen really learns she wants to be different than everyone else sees her and realizes the negative influence her parents have had on her.  In addition, she starts to actually make friends with some individuals in town which I enjoyed seeing because hiding behind her snotty attitude is a lot of self-doubt. Of course, Dylan and his chip are not easy to get close to either so of course, them getting together was inevitable right?

This installment allows some characters from some of the previous books to show up and play small roles which is one of the things I love most about series like this and my favorite small-town romance, Virgin River. And of course, Tucker, Dylan's dog, is the added icing on the cake.  If you love smalltown romances which also have some heavy-hitting plotlines as well, this might be a series you want to consider.

2 Bloggers 1 Series - Peace Talks (Dresden Files #16)

 

Stormi and I keep moving along on our buddy read of the Dresden Files series and the end is almost in sight!  The newest installment, number 18, recently released so that means two more book and we are current and up to date.  So read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Stormi's to see hers.

MY THOUGHTS: I am still enjoying Harry's world, but sometimes Harry's world is a really wordy one, so I was thrilled this installment clocked in under 350 pages. 

A Supernatural summit is taking place in order to try to garner some kind of peace among all the entities and once again, Harry finds himself in the thick of things.  Because of his role as Mab's right-hand man, the White Council is becoming more distrustful of him.  Since this is book 16 and everything is considered a spoiler, I'll just say we get to see quite a few familiar faces including Molly, Thomas, Maggie, Mouse, Ebenezer and Butters.

There were quite a few things that made me unhappy in this book, especially pertaining to Thomas, but it didn't mean I didn't enjoy it.  I just question a few directions the author is headed toward but hey, he's the boss, right?  

Overall, I'm glad to have gotten this far and Stormi has warned me the next book is really going to tick me off.  I am struggling between a 4/5 or a 5/5 but my rating is reflective of my appreciativeness for a short installment this time around.

2 Readers 1 Series - Willowleaf Lane (Hope's Crossing #5)

 

Stormi and I do at least two buddy reads each month, sometimes three, and in 2026 we really want to try to wrap some of our series reads up.  So we kicked off the year with what we anticipated would be a quick read and continued on with the Hope's Crossing series.  While it will never be the same as Virgin River was for me, it is similar enough to fill the huge void that one left.  Read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads to see if Stormi liked it!

 

TITLE: Willowleaf Lane (Hope's Crossing #5)

MY THOUGHTS: While I still enjoyed it, the last installment in this series fell a bit flat for me. I am pleased to say this one pulled me right back in and I loved Candy and Spencer's story.

When she was a teen, Candy had a huge crush on Spencer. They became good friends, but Candy's weight issues and her lack of confidence prevented it from becoming more.  Spencer went on to be a famous athlete but got into some trouble and is now back in town starting over.  Candy spent the last year addressing her health and getting in shape.  She has never forgiven Spencer for something he did years ago, and she is not happy to see him.  However, she does feel a kinship to his daughter who has recently lost her mother, just like Candy did when she was her age.  Can Candy forgive Spencer and act on the spark she is once again feeling when she looks at him, or is the damage already done?

I really enjoyed Candy as a character and this is basically an enemies-to-lover trope because when Spencer comes back to town, Candy definitely treats him like an enemy.  I think Peyton, Spencer's daughter, actually does a lot of bring down Candy's walls and as that relationship flourished, so did the one with Spencer.  I also liked how Thayne added the story of Candy's brother in with this one and I'm excited to see what comes from him in future books.  As always, there is an adorable dog named Tucker who Candy babysits for her brother from time-to-time and as always, I have to give him a shout-out.  Go Tucker!

As far as ratings go, the last book received a 4/5 from me but gained a whole rating point due to the dog.  This one also gets a 4/5 but it stands on its own and doesn't need an extra boost. If you love feel-good small-town stories, then this is definitely a series to consider.  I think we have two more books and this series will be complete, and I am looking forward to both of them.

Being the holiday month, Stormi and I decided to go with something "light" for a buddy read and we landed on the next installment of the Hope's Crossing series.  These books are pretty much quick reads for us, so it made total sense to work it into this crazy month.  So read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads and see what Stormi thought.

 

TITLE: Currant Creek Valley (Hope's Crossing #4)

MY THOUGHTS: When I first started this series, I was looking for something similar in tastes to the Virgin River series.  While that will always remain a favorite to me, this series overall is similar in theme and quite enjoyable.

This installment focuses on Alex, a sibling to some of the characters featured in the prior books. Alex is a trained chef and is getting ready to open a new restaurant in Hope's Crossing backed by her sister's husband. This is finally Alex's opportunity to have her own kitchen.  When the contractor gets delayed, Brodie calls upon Sam, a professional he has used for jobs in another city, to come finish the job.  Sam is thrilled as he is looking for a quieter town where he and his son, 6-year-old Ethan to settle down. When Sam and Alex meet sparks fly.  However, both have some previous baggage to overcome and while Sam is willing to take a risk, Alex isn't.  Can Sam and Ethan change her mind.

I have to admit this is probably my least favorite of the series so far, but it was still good. I loved Sam and Ethan and enjoyed some of the side characters, especially the elderly lady Alex checks in on daily to provide food and assistance. Yet Alex was rather annoying and while her behaviors made sense in the end, I wish I had an idea earlier what had happened to make her such a player with the men in her life. Also, early on in the book, Alex finds a stray chocolate lab she names Leo running loose in town.  She takes the dog in and tries to find his owners but has no luck.  Leo plays a pretty big role in the majority of the book, which was a pleasant surprise and let's be honest, definitely bumped my rating up a star/paw.  

There are four more books in this series and I'm hoping I can conclude this series in 2026.  They are great to throw in here and there among some of my heavier, darker reads and I look forward to picking them up.

2 Bloggers 1 Series - A Wonderful Christmas Crime (Christmas Tree Farm Mysteries #2)

 

I kind of talked Stormi into catching up on this series now that Christmas is moving closer. I know it just released at the end of October but I believe both Stormi and I have had an ARC for a while now. I adore this series but that being said, I also would not be upset of this was the last installment. I believe it was actually supposed to end a few books back but then the author was greenlit for some more.  So read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads and see what Stormi thought.

 

TITLE: A Wonderful Christmas Crime (Christmas Tree Farm Mystery #6

The thief manages to escape, but after dinner, Holly spots their lifeless body. It’s clear that someone in town was keen to kill them. Evan is less than jolly to find his wife at the scene of yet another holiday homicide and asks her to promise that she’ll leave the investigating to the police. But Holly has never been one to turn down a challenge and has to get creative with the help of a few of her friends in order to find this killer. 

Will she and her friends be able to stop the killer, and uncover the motive behind the attempted robbery, or will the killer strike again and paint the town a bloody red?

MY THOUGHTS: I continue to enjoy the series and reading each new one is kind of like visiting old friends. This year's murder, because yes, they are a yearly thing in Mistletoe, finds a new Mistletoe business owner suspected of murder when someone dies during the theft of some rare Swedish goat figurines.  

Holly and her sheriff husband Evan have just learned Holly is pregnant.  While everyone is excited, they are also worried because the doctor expressed some concerns with Holly's blood pressure being high. Holly really tries to stay out of the mayhem this year but it she really likes the suspect, Alice, and wants to help. Will she be able to watch from the sidelines or end up in the middle of another Christmas caper?

It is always fun visiting the crew from Mistletoe and see all the reindeer games going on at the farm. There are so many likable characters in this series and Frost does a great job of working them all in. This year, they may even be an appearance from Santa himself, but you'll have to read it yourself to find out.  The addition of an antique road show going on provides a new backdrop and intensifies the latest investigation. 

I have gone back and forth between four and five stars for my rating.  It is one of my favorite cozy series and it was just the Christmas vibe I was looking for.  The mystery was good and threw in a few surprises along the way.  There is also a side plot that really pulled the heartstrings (yes, I have some) as well. My only issue is that since each book happens at Christmas time, we miss a whole year of happenings and have to be caught up through the author's narration.  I would love to see one set at a different time, maybe even a Christmas in July event, just to switch things up.  

If you are looking for a light Christas read and love cozies, I can't recommend this series enough.  It's become a yearly tradition to read the newest and if there is another one next year, I will be right there reading it as well.

2 Bloggers 1 Series - The Unholy (Krewe of Hunters #6)

 

I had to go back in the archives to see when Stormi and I last buddy read a book in this series.  I came up with March 2024. Wow!  That was a long time ago.  We actually have several Heather Graham series on the go so it's not surprising that I've started to get some of them mixed together.  I will say I am glad we picked this one up this month.  So, read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads to hear Stormi's opinion.

 

TITLE:  The Unholy (Krewe of Hunters #6)

MY THOUGHTS: I have to admit I think this is my favorite of the series thus far.  Madison works at special effects studio who has been tasked to help remake an old horror film.  The studio is attached to the historic Black Box Cinema and one evening, following a personal screening session, the girlfriend of the owner's son Archie is murdered.  Archie is the only suspect, but his father Eddie knows he is innocent.  Not believing the local police will look any further than his son, he calls in Sean Cameron, and FBI agent who used to work for him.  He links Sean with a current employee, Madison, because he suspects she has a special talent, not unlike Sean, which can help the investigation.  Madison can see and speak with ghosts.  Maybe the newly departed girlfriend can help the Krewe exonerate Archie and find the real killer.

I think one reason I found this installment so appealing was the old movie lore and setting of the current mystery.  It was nice hearing about Hollywood history, and the mystery elements really sucked me in.  Although it looked as if no one but Archie could have created the murder, there ended up being tons of suspects and it was fun guessing as I read along.  As the books are somewhat formulaic, I knew Madison and Sean would eventually hook up, but I liked both of them so much that it was enjoyable witnessing them getting to know each other better as they worked together to solve the case. Also, Madison has a ghostly roommate who is a lot of fun and made the book even better.  His name is Bogie and yes, he is THAT Bogie.  

Overall, this was the perfect time to read this paranormal suspense book.  I am sure I will continue on with this series sooner rather than later but since there are so many in this series so far, the verdict is out on if I will ever complete it.

I must have known I would need something light this month because I suggested to Stormi that we continue our series read of the Hope's Crossing series, or maybe it was her suggestion.  Either way, it was the right one and I devoured this third book in the series.  Read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads to see hers.

MY THOUGHTS: It sure doesn't take long for the drama to start with this book.  Preparing for the Christmas holidays at her bookstore, Maura is expecting her daughter to return home from college for a break.  What she didn't expect is that her daughter's father, who Sage had no idea about the identity of, would be with her.

Maura now has to deal not only with the first Christmas without her youngest daughter, but with a whole lot of stress, questions and unresolved feelings that range from anger to resentment to mistrust.

Add in some side happenings in the town of Hope's Crossing, including Jackson dealing with his own estrangement from his father Harry, and a new puppy and the author created an intriguing read that once again had me hoping for a wonderful outcome.

This book was a wonderful installment.  While it starts around the  Christmas holiday, it wasn't overly focused on it and actually spanned a good many months.  I loved how Maura and Jackson worked through the problems that led to their breakup as high school sweethearts, and how they both navigated the issues with Sage and her feelings about being kept in the dark.  And one of my favorite characters turned out to be Harry, Jackson's grumpy and often-mean father.  It was nice to see Harry's character development and the small sliver of his heart which led him to open up to Sage. 

This is a wonderful series I would recommend to fans of Virgin River and I can't wait for the next one.

2 Bloggers 1 Series - Changes (Dresden Files #12)

  I can't believe I'm still reading The Dresden Files.  I actually faltered and Stormi and I took off a month and I actually crammed one in right before I read this one (don't tell Stormi) but I feel like I'm back on track and I am finding myself excited to continue on once again.  So, check out my thoughts and then hop over to Stormi's at Storm Reads to see hers.  I will warn you though, a lot of this book is a spoiler for major things happening in Harry's world, so I may not actually be sharing that much.

MY THOUGHTS: I actually left the last sentence of the synopsis off because it is a major spoiler. Stormi recommended I start this installment blind.  I did and I have to agree, it's the best way to go into it.

Once again, just like usual, Harry finds himself in the middle of a mess.  And even I have to admit this book seems messier than usual.  The Red Court is planning an attack that may alter not only the presence of the White Council, but also seriously alter the world as we know it.  Harry finds himself working with his ex-girlfriend Susan, who he hasn't seen in years.  A lot of old familiar faces show up to eventually assist and while I felt the previous novel, Turn Coat, was a bit slow, this one was fast-paced and thrilling from start to finish.  

I can't give a review without mentioning my favorites.  Mouse, Harry's best canine, plays a big role again and even Thomas is in this one more than I thought given the events in the last installment.  Sanya, the Russian Knight who has assisted in the past, also shows up and he provides such comic relief that I can't help but love him.  Finally, there is Murphy.  I have managed to avoid spoilers but if the author doesn't put her and Harry together as a romantic couple soon, I might just scream.

So overall, a wonderful addition to the series.  Some pretty serious things happen, along with some pretty serious decisions made, which make me very interested to start the next book.  However, there is a short story collection which falls between this one and the next I will be picking up next.  If you aren't reading this series, why not?

2 Bloggers 1 Series - Cursed at Dawn (Blackbird Trilogy

 

This month Stormi and I finally up the Blackbird Trilogy although I think there are now three more so who knows what the official title is anymore.  This one was probably my least favorite, but I do have a sense of accomplishment knowing that we got the trilogy done.  So read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads for Stormi's.

 

TITLE: Cursed at Dawn (Blackbird Trilogy #3)

MY THOUGHTS: As I mentioned, this was my least favorite of the trilogy and while I found it interesting enough, I also had a few issues with it.

When the book opens, Stephan Dante is escaping from prison and leaving plenty of carnage in his rearview mirror.  Della and Mason, part of the elite group of FBI known as Blackbird, as well as the rest of the group, end up following him to Scotland, where Dante is once again convincing people he can give them everlasting life.  This time around though Dante has a bigger vendetta.  He wants both Della and Mason dead and will not stop until his plans are finalized.  

This book felt too much like a history book for my liking.  While Graham is known for working historical elements into her books, this one had page after page of tales behind almost everything Della and Mason encountered.  At a certain point, it became too much for me, and I found myself skimming at times.  Also, I found the pacing to be a bit off.  It took forever for the book to pick up speed and when it finally did, it was quickly over.  Finally, as much as I like Della as a character, she makes some really stupid decisions, in part because she is over-confident that she knows Dante better than anyone else.

I really am glad to have this trilogy behind me and because I am a bit of a completist when it comes to series, I will probably continue at some point if Stormi wants to.  However, I am really in no hurry at the moment and wish I had enjoyed this installment better.

It's hard to believe Stormi and I are still managing to read a Dresden Files book each month.  Even harder to believe is that we are already up to #10.  I am still enjoying the series and haven't considered quitting yet.  So read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads to see what Stormi thought!

And everything was going so well for once….

MY THOUGHTS: Well, let's get the important thing out of the way first.  Mouse wasn't in very much danger this installment so my anxiety about him (and the numerous times I would message Stormi asking, "Does Mouse die?") was much less.  

Once again Harry is in the middle of a hot mess which all started out with a fun snowball fight with his friend Michael's kids.  Soon they are being attacked by Billy Goat Gruff and his family and Harry soon learns that's just the tip of the iceberg for all the problems brewing. Marcone, the Chicago mob boss, has been kidnapped, Mab is more off her rocker than normal and is calling in a favor from Harry, and someone is after the Archive (a young child who has the power of knowing everything ever written or documented in the whole universe.  

This book was a lot of fun as normal, and I love how Butcher will pull past characters in from time to time and weave them into a new adventure.  My favorites, besides Mouse, Mister (the cat), and Harry include Thomas and Murphy.  I also enjoy how Harry now has Michael's daughter as an apprentice and is teaching her how to use her natural strengths and powers.  I will admit I wouldn't mind a book which opens with Harry being on vacation somewhere and getting some peace.  I think he has earned it.  I'm also a bit upset about Harry's new relationship interest.  I'm tempted to deduct a star just because of that but I won't be petty.

I can't praise this series enough and if I'm still interested after 10 months, Butcher is definitely doing something right.

Well Stormi and I are at it once again. I can't believe I have been reading this series consistently for nine months now.  It's both exciting and overwhelming as there are still many more to go.  So read on for my thoughts on this next installment and then hop over to Stormi's for hers.

MY THOUGHTS: Harry, Harry, Harry.  Sometimes I don't know what else to say. I'm amazed that we are already done with book nine and he isn't dead yet.  In fact, I am amazed more of his cronies and sidekicks haven't been murdered, blown up or zapped permanently into the Nevernever yet.  Oh, I am utterly amazed that Mouse, the amazing dog sidekick/assistant has lived this long.  If Mouse dies, I will riot!

In this installment, someone is basically going around several states killing supernaturals and primarily witches. Some think it's Harry, Harry fears it might be his brother, and Molly, his new young apprentice just wants in on the action.  Harry ends up teaming up with Murphy (can we kiss already please!) an ex-girlfriend, Elaine and Chicago's leading crime boss to find out what is really going on and what vampire order is behind it.  Because seriously, there always seems to be a vampire order behind things.

Once again, I found this to be a fast-paced read full of action, wonderful banter between Harry and about everyone at some time or another, and interaction with some of my favorite side characters.  Molly is trying to learn everything she needs to in order to stay alive, Murphy wants to help because she and Harry have become solid friends and fears for the state of her city and Harry's life, and Thomas, Harry's half-brother and vampire.  The mysteries in the books seem to get more and more complex as the books continue and I am never bored. In fact, each book just makes me more and more exciting to pick up the next book. 

If you are a fan of urban fantasy, please give this series a shot.  Be ready for a long commitment if you find yourself loving them but they are definitely worth the ride.
