This week I am sharing some of my favorite books which take place in another country.
Winnie the Pooh - A.A. Milne. The "silly ole' bear" hails from England.
A Hundred Piece of Me - Lucy Dillon. Another England book.
Akata Witch - Nnedi Okorafor. A wonderful MG book set in Nigeria.
The Prey of Gods - Nicky Draden. I loved this science fiction tale set in South Africa.
A Treacherous Curse - Deanna Raybourn. I love the whole Veronica Speedwell series (they've all gotten 5/5 from me) which takes place in London, England.
A Study in Scarlet Women - Sherry Thomas. Another wonderful take set in London.
Christmas at the Dog & Duck - Jill Steeples. I loved this book and really need to continue on with the series. It takes place in....yep, you guessed it, LONDON!
Certain Dark Things - Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Mexico City and I loved every minute of it!
The Skeletons of Scarborough House - Kitty French. Another England books. This cozy was so wacky and cute that I simply must continue on with it. I love that little pug Lestat!
Into the Dim - Janet B Taylor. Scotland
So basically I confirmed my suspicions. If a book I've read isn't set in the US or some supernatural place, then it's likely that it probably takes place in England. I was just glad I was able to find a few other locations so this list wasn't so one-dimensional.
I can't wait to see your lists so I can be like "Yea, why didn't I include that one." Anything to make me thing most of my books don't take place in England.
Most of what I read is set in the US so I had to go back to books I read years ago!

DeleteThose first two picks brought such a smile to my face, Barb. Such beautiful covers! I've already gone "Yeah, why didn't I include that one" already, a couple of times already today. I realised all the thrillers I read are usually set in the US or more oftne the UK too. But I managed to find a good few that aren't though, so I was happy about that lol

DeleteOoh I absolutely loved Akata Witch! It's kind of crazy to think about how few books are set outside of the United States.

DeleteHa, I think I read a lot of books set in England, too! France would probably be high up there, too.

DeleteI tend to read a whole lot of books set in the US, England, Scotland, or some place completely fictional. I really need to branch out a bit.

DeleteOoh Winnie the Pooh! The Hundred Aker Wood would definitely have a place on a fictional settings list, right? But I seem to read a lot set in England too- I never seem to get tired of there.
ReplyDeleteYea I was torn about adding it but when I looked into, it said it's setting was Essex England so that worked for me :)

Into the Dim was good. I don't know why I've not read the sequel...oh yea, too many books not enough time.

DeleteOh this is a great list! I liked the setting of Into the Dim a lot. And Akata Witch and Certain Dark Things sound pretty great, I am going to have to get to those soon! And I feel you- England is definitely one of the easier ones to find!

DeleteI have a lot of books on my read list that are set in the United Kingdom too...or Australia (which is not that far removed in my opinion either). And there's nothing wrong with reading a lot of books set in either of those places.
