Can't Wait Wednesday (189)

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books.  It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

FROM GOODREADS:  A dark, romantic YA suspense novel with an SF edge and plenty of drama, layering the secrets we keep and how appearances can deceive, from the New York Times bestselling author.

In this tiny, terrifying town, the lost are never found. When Araceli Flores Harper is sent to live with her great-aunt Ottilie in her ramshackle Victorian home, the plan is simple. She'll buckle down and get ready for college. Life won't be exciting, but she'll cope, right?  Wrong. From the start, things are very, very wrong. Her great-aunt still leaves food for the husband who went missing twenty years ago, and local businesses are plastered with MISSING posters. There are unexplained lights in the woods and a mysterious lab just beyond the city limits that the locals don't talk about. Ever. When she starts receiving mysterious letters that seem to be coming from the past, she suspects someone of pranking her or trying to drive her out of her mind. To solve these riddles and bring the lost home again, Araceli must delve into a truly diabolical conspiracy, but some secrets fight to stay buried...

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  I'm going to be honest and admit I almost skipped this one because of "...romantic YA..." but the rest of the synopsis was just too good to pass up and it doesn't scream of too much romance. Plus I've had great luck with this author.

SO WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK????

  1. Yeah, the "romantic YA" description put me off a little too, especially since one of the main issues I had with her last mystery YA was that it focused too much on the romantic drama and not enough on the actual mystery. I will wait to see what you think!

  2. I think 'truly diabolical' won me over with this one -- now I want to see if it holds up to that!@

  3. I'm afraid the romantic YA is where my interest would stop! I just can't be bothered with that at all after Twilight and all its copies!

    1. I hope it's not much romance. And don't even get me started on Twilight. If I ever fell for a vampire, I would probably want him to be scary and ruthless - but then I'm weird, and I'm definitely no Bella - thank God!

  4. An old Victorian house, strange lights in the woods . . . it's like a Gothic ghost story!

I joined Goodreads yesterday. I can't wait to see what kind of suggestions their algorithm and other readers give me.

  5. Sounds good to me and the synopsis doesn't mention romance so it sounds like that won't be a big part of the story.

  6. I just saw this recently and it does sound good. Hopefully the romance will take a back seat to the rest of the stoey😊

    1. I don't know why all YA thinks they need some romance. It's not a necessity.

  8. I almost skipped it because of that first describing paragraph too, but you're right! The rest sounds pretty fascinating. I think this needs to go on my list. :)

    1. I know. I think by adding that line they are causing people not to give it a chance. The rest of the synopsis sounds great.
