FROM GOODREADS: Lou did what the children of parents with back-breaking, poor paying jobs are supposed to do; pulled up her bootstraps, went to college, and got an office job with coworkers who won’t stop talking about their multi-level marketing scheme disguised as self-betterment.

Determined to lift her ill mother out of poverty before it's too late, and in the spirit of climbing the corporate ladder, Lou accepts an assignment in the rural hills of Ohio. She quickly finds herself stranded in the middle of nowhere with a sabotaged truck, a dog she’s determined to keep safe, and something stalking her through the ancient Appalachian woods.

If she can’t escape the woods in time, she’ll come face to face with the fact that her job isn’t the only thing that wants to eat her alive.

Morsel is a chilling testament to the burden of generational poverty and the all-consuming nature of capitalism, where the monster and the monstrous, in the end, are not the same.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  I'm very curious about the Ohio/Appalachian wood setting, seeing as how I live in the middle of the Appalachian area.  I am a bit worried about the dog she is trying to keep safe, but I have a feeling I will admire her efforts to do so.

Is a Witch Without Powers Still a Witch?

TITLE: The Late-Night Witches
AUTHOR: Auralee Wallace
PUBLISHER: Ace
PUBLISHING DATE: SAugust 19, 202\5
PAGES: 400
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS: Cassie Beckett’s life is anything but magical. With a wild younger sister, three unruly kids, and an absent husband, she’s really not looking forward to the witching month of October. At least the gorgeous, foggy Prince Edward Island is always quiet.
That is, until the vampires arrive.
As the creatures sink their teeth into Cassie’s tenuous grip on normalcy, she’s forced to come face-to-face with long–disregarded family secrets. The legacy gifts her with power, but also a lofty rid the island of vampires, or let them win. (Both options suck, in more ways than one.)
Armed with her family, newfound friends, and a baby in a spectacularly garlicky onesie, Cassie must learn what it is to be a witch and how to fight for what she loves before time runs out. Because on Halloween night, the stakes will be higher than ever before...and it’s up to Cassie to finish what the witches that came generations before her started.

MY THOUGHTS: I thought this would be a cozy read as we move into spooky season and I wasn't wrong. I also know this author has a cozy mystery series centering around witches which I have always been interested in so I figured it was about time to give her a try.

Cassie and her three children live on Prince Edward Island.  Her husband is overseas working with Doctors Without Borders and her days are spent trying to keep her family together and raise her sister Eliza - even though she is a full-grown adult.  Cassie's mother died when Cassie was young and the two entered foster care when her aunt Dorcas, refused to care for them.  Or at least that's how Cassie remembers it.

Now strange things are happening in Cassie's neighborhood and one night, Eliza's boyfriend shows up sick, or is he?  Cassie comes to realize that there is actually a vampire curse which comes to fruition on Halloween Night, and she is actually the "Witch of Her Generation." She is tasked with killing the vampire who has recently broken his bondage and failure to do so with certainly mean the end of life as she knows it on the island, and possibly the whole world.

This book really tries to do a lot and although not perfect, I think it does it fairly well.  Cassie is dealing with single motherhood, questioning her marriage to a man who always wants to do good - elsewhere, an aunt she hasn't spoken to in years, tingling hands and a burning coin in her pocket.  Her sister Eliza is a fun yet hot mess who leaps before she thinks and Cassie is really sick of bailing her out.  There is also a sexy neighbor next door who recently took on the responsibility of raising his infant niece after her mother took off.  Together, all these individuals find themselves coming together for one cause. Even though Cassie is struggling to figure out if she does have witchy powers and honestly believes she will die rather than kill the Vampire King, she is determined to find her lost memories and hopes her powers show up along the way.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book.  I only had two small concerns.  One, there is an element of infidelity and even though it really doesn't play a big role in the plot, it's a pet peeve of mine and something I don't like at all.  And secondly, I found the pacing to be a bit slow.  There is a lot to unpack in the novel and there were times I found myself setting the book aside and not really picking it up for a few more days.

This book STRONGLY gives off "Practical Magic" vibes, so much in fact I wonder how much it was an inspiration to the author during her writing.  There is definitely a found-family element as well which I always seem to enjoy.  Halloween season is quickly approaching and if you want something that fits the mood without being full blown-out horror, look no further.

And I Thought I Had a Headache...

TITLE: Head Like a Hole
AUTHOR: Andrew Van Wey
PUBLISHER: Greywood Bay
PUBLISHING DATE: September 30, 2022
PAGES: 382
SOURCE: Kindle Unlimited

FROM GOODREADS: When you bury your past make sure that it’s dead.
It’s the mid-nineties. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online.
And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.
For Megan Monroe and her friends, this is how their nightmare begins: a wet whisper over their shoulder; a dark hand reaching out from the edge of their sight; and a name clawing at the back of their minds.
A young woman scratched from their memory.
To stop this devouring terror, Megan will need to mend broken friendships and reassemble her fractured past. For what stalks them hungers to remake itself in their image… piece by bloody piece.

MY THOUGHTS: This book caught my attention in 2022 when it was first released but I never picked it up.  I also then got it confused with a novella with a similar cover I tried and soft DNF'ed.  However, it recently came up as a book club pick and when I picked it up, I devoured it and became sorry I waited so long.

A few years ago, Megan was in a devastating car wreck which led to the loss of most of her childhood memories.  Her parents are killed in a house fire and she flunks out of art school.  She is trying to put back together pieces of her past and it isn't an easy task.  Her entire history, including a mysterious woman from the past that neither she, nor her estranged friend group, remember very well.
A fisherman experiences a mysterious catch off the coast while illegally fishing one night.  He rescues a woman, Oksana, who is unlike any woman I've encountered in recent books.  She is basically a head who regenerates the more she consumes from others.  The two stories are set to collide and as they do, the author creates a thrilling and unique ride definitely worth experiencing.

I loved the 90s nostalgia throughout the book and as a very flawed character, Megan was intriguing.  I wanted to know what had happened in her past that led up to current events, and I definitely needed to know more about Oksana, a truly terrifying villain in her own right. My only real complaints are both minor and huge.  Firstly, I saw where the ending was going but it was such a fun trip there, I didn't mind.  Secondly, dog death which is a big no-no in my book.

I highly recommend this book to people who like messy, gory horror, and a plot with bite (no pun intended given the mysterious head).  I need to see what else this author has written because I am definitely interested.

Feed Your TBR - Dollface

Can't Wait Wednesday, which I have adapted to better suit my blog as "Feed Your TBR" is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books.  It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

February 24, 2026

FROM GOODREADS: Barbie meets Scream with a 90s nostalgia twist in this horror romp from Bless Your Heart author Lindy Ryan.

Horror author Jill has just moved to suburban New Jersey, hoping to fit in with the new PTA moms and maybe not weird everyone out with her Final Girl coffee mug. You know. Make some real friends.

But then a plastic face-masked serial killer begins slashing their way through town, one overly made-up mom at a time. The police are incredulous. The moms are indignant. And Jill is slowly wrapped into a killer’s murderous spree, until she might just be the last woman standing.

A delightfully murderous novel that is equal parts scathing and salacious, Dollface will win you over with its gossip and gore, one body at a time.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  I've read and loved the Bless Your Heart series so it's a given I want to read this book as well.  I love slasher stories and personally, I'd gravitate toward a person with a Final Girl coffee mug.  I can't wait to meet Jill!

A Stars Hollow for Supernatural Beings???

TITLE: Howl (Monster Boyfriends #2)
AUTHOR: Meg Alivien
PUBLISHER: Duke Books
PUBLISHING DATE: September 2, 2025
PAGES: 252
SOURCE: Kindle Unlimited

FROM GOODREADS: In the small town of Shadow Hills, Tennessee, paranormals and humans coexist on charming cobblestone streets. For tourists, it's the perfect place to visit and experience Halloween all year round. But for Raegan Baker, it's home. Living among werewolves, vampires, and other beings unlike herself is perfectly normal, and besides the small town drama, Raegan’s life is peaceful. She’s happy working at the local bookstore, Bound & Buried, and spending time with her two best friends, Jamie and Joanna.
However, after a scary incident with an ex-boyfriend, things with Jamie start to change. Suddenly, Jamie is no longer just the sweet friend Raegan has known and loved since she was sixteen. Now he’s…sexy, and incredibly protective of her.
But Jamie is harboring a deep secret. Sure, he’s been in love with his best friend since high school, but he’s also a werewolf. The grudge he’s held against the inner monster that stole his autonomy has dictated his life for far too long, and it’s time to come clean.
Once the secret is out, both Raegan and Jamie will be forced to face all of their worries and fears head on, as well as their hidden feelings for one another. But where do they even start?
This low stakes, minimal plot / mostly vibes, friends to lovers romance is perfect for fans of Halloweentown and Gilmore Girls!

MY THOUGHTS: I actually grabbed this one a month or so back when I needed a book that started with an "H" for a reading contest I am doing.  I saw the Gilmore Girls comparison and have to say, it really delivered on that vibe.

Raegan and Jamie have been besties since he moved to Shadow Hills in high school.  They have always relied on each other for everything so when Reagan decides to break up with her current idiot boyfriend, Jamie senses it may not go well and insists on going with her.  Jamie has always been protective of Reagan and while he has secretly been in love with her for years, but how can he ever share with her he is actually a werewolf when it's a side of himself he has resented for years.

I really liked Reagan and Jamie as characters and had so much fun getting to know the residents of Shadow Falls.  In town, humans and supernaturals live side by side as something happened years ago which led to sanctuary towns being created to protect those different from everyone else.  Reagan herself has no special powers, but she loves her town and holds no judgement for anyone.  It also doesn't hurt that the town is basically described as living in Halloween season all year long and I love that idea. As the synopsis says, the plot is pretty low stakes and there are a couple of steamy scenes but it's on the shorter side so everything pretty much worked together to create a really enjoyable read.

This book would be great read now that Fall has actually commenced.  I can imagine curling up in a blanket on the couch with my hot beverage of choice and losing myself for a few hours in this cozy world.  Good thing there is a companion novel featuring some side characters from this book.  Now to work it in!

Always a Bad Idea

TITLE: Let's Split Up
AUTHOR: Bill Wood
PUBLISHER: Scholastic
PUBLISHING DATE: September 2, 2025
PAGES: 339
SOURCE: ARC

FROM GOODREADS: When hot "it-couple" Brad and Shelley are brutally murdered in a manor on the edge of town, a group of teen friends investigate.
Set in Sanera, a small community in California where rumor spreads as fast as the fire on the day of the killings, the theory is the old ghoul who haunts the house after his own murder has finally taken revenge. As Cam, Jonesy, Amber and new-girl Buffy investigate, the rumor feels closer to the truth than they ever dared think possible, and as they enter the mansion themselves, the idea of splitting up to find evidence will prove to be either the best ... or worst decision of all...

MY THOUGHTS: I have enjoyed many YA horror books so when I saw this one, which is compared to Scream and Scooby-Doo, I really wanted to give it a chance.  While I can see this book appealing to a YA audience and recognize I technically am not the targeted reading group, this one really didn't click much with me.  I also think it reads more like a MG book with older characters than an actual YA one.

Two popular teens are gruesomely murdered in an abandoned mansion on Sanera, California, long reported to be haunted.  The police begin investigating, if you actually call it that, and frustrated by their lack of progress, a friend group of four seniors at the local high school decide they can do better. Over the next few weeks, bodies continue to either pile up or go missing.  Urged on by the new girl Buffy, they set a trap for the "ghost" in order to prove the killer is very much made of flesh and blood.

This book is really a throwback to 90's horror movies. It definitely has a Scooby Doo feel and there is even a cute dog.  However, I found the characters a bit annoying and stereotypical.  Jonesy is basically Jughead from Riverdale but less likeable, Amber is your over-achieving teen, Buffy is the gung-ho leap before you think things out character and Cam is the comedic jock.  I will say that there is a parental presence in this book which I do feel is often neglected in YA books, but the parents didn't make smart decisions either. And at the end of the book, the parents make some really questionable decisions but without giving too much away, all I can say is "What the heck?"

Finally, I felt the writing style a bit jarring.  I usually love books written in multiple POVs but in this one, the characters could be in the middle of something and one chapter from one POV would end, and a new chapter would pick back up where the last chapter left off. It really interrupted my flow.

I think this book would be a wonderful recommendation for a youth wanting to dip their toes into the horror genre.  There is no real gore, and the scares are definitely age appropriate.  I see there is a sequel coming out, but I think I will give it pass.

MY RATING: 2 PAWS

Buried by Books #8

Gee it's been a while since I've done one of these. I had to go all the way back to February to find my last feature. If you've not seen one before, this is where I showcase books, sometimes weird and out-of-character, which I have added to my Libby holds request on my Kindle Unlimited TBR list.  Today I'm sharing some recent Kindle Unlimited Finds.  I am also including the Goodreads links if you actually want to learn more about the books and not just what caught my attention.

Hallow:
C.M. Lacosta - I'm a bit obsessed with Sleepy Hollow stuff so this immediately caught my attention.  It may actually be Sleepy Hollow smut though so only time will tell.

Love and Lattes at Pumpkin Hollow: Victoria Walter - Reminds me of Stars Hollow and Gilmore Girls.

Espresso Yourself: Lara McKenzie - It's been a while since I read a cozy mystery and look at that adorable bat in the coffee!

The Village: Krissy Webb - Saw this one somewhere and actually bothered to read the synopsis which sounded pretty good.  It's a thriller, I remember that much.

Bunny Foo-Foo Trilogy: E.V. Dean - This cover screams to my horror-loving dark heart.

Neverthorn: Shannon Mayer - A COMPLETE cover add.  I want to visit there.

Have you by chance read any of these?  Which one should I pick up first?

Not Moving Here!

TITLE: Strange Houses
AUTHOR: Uketsu
PUBLISHER: HarperVia
PUBLISHING DATE: March 3, 2025
PAGES: 208
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS: A writer fascinated by the macabre is approached by an acquaintance who is considering purchasing a second-hand house in Tokyo. With its bright and spacious interior, the home seems perfect. But looking closer, the building’s floor plan reveals a mysterious "dead space” hidden between the walls. Seeking a second opinion, the writer shares the floor plan with an architect friend only to discover more “strange spaces” dotted across the house.
What are these mysterious “strange spaces” and why do they exist—are they really there, or is there something off with the floor plan? Who is the home’s former resident who suddenly disappeared?
The freelance writer and his architect friend can’t resist the challenge of solving the riddle of these puzzling floor plans . . . and the terrifying plot behind it all.

MY THOUGHTS: This book really blew up on Booktube early on in the year and the author is some mysterious Youtube figure so when I saw it at my library, I decided to see what all the hype was about.  It was a short read and there are lots of house diagrams, so it moves even faster than anticipated.  This is also a reason I highly recommend a physical copy if you decide to pick it up.  I don't regret reading it but fear I set my expectations too high.

The book is told in parts and reads like a short story collection which are all interwoven to tell one big tale.  Pretty much a writer is telling the story of this mysterious house, mysterious deaths and unsolved mysteries through interviews and examining floor plans.  It's a unique format which worked well overall but did add quite a bit of repetition, which honestly, I was not a fan of.  The ending was satisfying and I'm hard pressed to say much more the synopsis for fear of spoiling too much.

The best thing about Strange Houses was the atmosphere and vibe.  It definitely gives off a feeling of dread and creepiness and screams to be read by flashlight on a dark rainy night when the electric goes out.  The author's first book, Strange Pictures, has a similar concept and I do plan on picking it up eventually, I'm just not in much of a hurry.  I also believe this originated as a Manga which I don't really read but it might have worked better in that format.

Feed Your TBR - The Meet-Poop

Can't Wait Wednesday, which I have adapted to better suit my blog as "Feed Your TBR" is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books.  It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

FROM GOODREADS: Shit happens…

Supermodel Lior Flynn is at the top of her game: gorgeous, confident, and successful. But as her thirtieth birthday looms, she finds herself growing tired of the constant media scrutiny and even more tired of men who only view her as arm candy. Yearning to travel the world's beautiful places rather than just pose in them, she's ready for a change and ready to make a real connection—if she can find the courage to take the first step.

Bestselling novelist Graham Forrester is still reeling from the collapse of his marriage to a flashy socialite turned influencer and officially done with high-drama women. Trapped post-divorce in a house that no longer feels like home and tending to his beloved old dog Brontë who doesn't have long to live, he knows he's stuck in a desperate rut but has no idea how to get out.

When Lior's designer sneaker hits a steaming pile of you-know-what from the sweet golden retriever at the end of Graham's leash, it's no meet-cute - in fact, it's a meet-poop. And every encounter after is somehow messier than the first, until a chance moment when both let their guards down and sparks fly. But can Lior trust Graham not to put her in a book and bolster his own fame? And can Graham trust that the drama of Lior's life won't derail his own?

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  I love an enemy-to-lovers trope and throw in a good dog, and I'm sold.  Plus, this just seemed like a perfect title to showcase on a blog that was created in memory of one of my seven favorite boxers (secret-I've only owned seven ❤️)

2 Bloggers 1 Series - The Unholy (Krewe of Hunters #6)

I had to go back in the archives to see when Stormi and I last buddy read a book in this series.  I came up with March 2024. Wow!  That was a long time ago.  We actually have several Heather Graham series on the go so it's not surprising that I've started to get some of them mixed together.  I will say I am glad we picked this one up this month.  So, read on for my thoughts and then hop over to Storm Reads to hear Stormi's opinion.

TITLE:  The Unholy (Krewe of Hunters #6)
AUTHOR: Heather Graham
PUBLISHER: MIRA
PUBLISHING DATE: June 26, 2012
PAGES: 369
SOURCE: Library

FROM GOODREADS:
At Hollywood's Black Box Cinema, a young starlet dies a terrifying death.
When a movie mogul's son is charged with the grisly murder, he calls agent Sean Cameron, who specializes in irregular investigations. As part of the FBI's paranormal team, Cameron knows that nightmares aren't limited to the silver screen.
Working with special-effects artist Madison Darvil — who has her own otherworldly gifts—Cameron delves into the malevolent force animating more than one movie monster. But will they be in time to stop the next noir scenario come to life?

MY THOUGHTS: I have to admit I think this is my favorite of the series thus far.  Madison works at special effects studio who has been tasked to help remake an old horror film.  The studio is attached to the historic Black Box Cinema and one evening, following a personal screening session, the girlfriend of the owner's son Archie is murdered.  Archie is the only suspect, but his father Eddie knows he is innocent.  Not believing the local police will look any further than his son, he calls in Sean Cameron, and FBI agent who used to work for him.  He links Sean with a current employee, Madison, because he suspects she has a special talent, not unlike Sean, which can help the investigation.  Madison can see and speak with ghosts.  Maybe the newly departed girlfriend can help the Krewe exonerate Archie and find the real killer.

I think one reason I found this installment so appealing was the old movie lore and setting of the current mystery.  It was nice hearing about Hollywood history, and the mystery elements really sucked me in.  Although it looked as if no one but Archie could have created the murder, there ended up being tons of suspects and it was fun guessing as I read along.  As the books are somewhat formulaic, I knew Madison and Sean would eventually hook up, but I liked both of them so much that it was enjoyable witnessing them getting to know each other better as they worked together to solve the case. Also, Madison has a ghostly roommate who is a lot of fun and made the book even better.  His name is Bogie and yes, he is THAT Bogie.

Overall, this was the perfect time to read this paranormal suspense book.  I am sure I will continue on with this series sooner rather than later but since there are so many in this series so far, the verdict is out on if I will ever complete it.

Designer Needed - Must Love Horses

TITLE: Swift and Saddled (Rebel Blue Ranch #2)
AUTHOR: Lyla Sage
PUBLISHER: Dial Press
PUBLISHING DATE: March 5, 2024
PAGES: 320
SOURCE: Own

FROM GOODREADS:
She’s the city girl who refuses to be saddled with a man. He’s the cowboy who wants her anyway.
The last thing Ada Hart needs is a man to take care of her. Not anymore. After failing out of her interior design program and the disaster that was her short-lived marriage, Ada clawed her way up from her rock bottom. Now, the only person she trusts is herself, and that has gotten her further than ever before. She has her own business, and one of the largest ranches in Wyoming just hired her for the most important project of her career.
When Ada arrives in Meadowlark, she finds herself in a dive bar where she can’t seem to shake the eyes of a handsome cowboy. When she leads him to the back of the bar, he leaves her with a kiss that most people can only fantasize about. She almost regrets that she’ll never see him again . . . except it turns out he’s her new boss.
Weston Ryder is a happy guy. Even happier now that the mystery woman from the bar is the interior designer for his dream project on his family’s ranch. He feels like he hit the jackpot. It’s too bad she wants absolutely nothing to do with him outside of work. Ada is convinced the pull she feels toward Wes will go away, but Wes can’t stop thinking about her. Even though walls are coming down around Rebel Blue, Ada’s walls are firmly in place.
Can they make it through this project without giving in? Or will they both put their dreams on the line for a chance at love?

MY THOUGHTS: Time to review another book from my August week-long cowboy romance era.  Swift and Saddled is the second in the series and I have to admit, it features my favorite brother, Wes.

Ada Hart has come to town to work on a remodeling project on Rebel Blue Ranch.  Her first night in town she runs into a handsome stranger in a dive bar and the two share a kiss which would have led to more had they not been interrupted.  The next day she goes to the ranch to meet her new boss and runs smack-dab into the handsome stranger who isn't a stranger after all.  It is the man who she has been exchanging emails with for months and who hired her for the newest ranch project.  Ada decides then and there the two need to keep their distance which is hard given she is staying with Wes and his father during the duration of the project, which is to take months.

I wasn't sold on Ada at first as she clearly had some baggage and took a hard stance about giving Wes any kind of chance.  However, my feelings quickly softened and as the book progressed, I learned more about her, as well as Wes, which made me like them both even more than I anticipated. Wes also has some issues and suffers from depression, which he never hides from Ada. It was also fun to see Ada interact with Wes's family and other ranch regulars and to watch her become part of the gang.  The ending was also a nice surprise as I expected one would have to give up some dream to make everything work but that ended up not being the case (mild spoiler but you are probably here for the horror anyway).

If you are looking for a fun romance with great disability rep and enjoyable, realistic characters, look no further!

I'm Going to Miss This Series...

TITLE: Road Trip With a Vampire (My Vampires #3)
AUTHOR: Jenna Levine
PUBLISHER: Berkley
PUBLISHING DATE: June 24, 2025
PAGES:
SOURCE: ARC

FROM GOODREADS:
Reformed bad witch Grizelda “Zelda” Watson had hoped to never see another vampire again when she slipped away to sunny California for a fresh start. She'd grown tired of them and their nonsense ages ago. But when a vampire with amnesia unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep with a letter from her old friend Reggie, and asks for her help, she can’t say no. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Peter Elliott is tall and gorgeous, looks great in yoga shorts, and has the kind of dark hair and surly expression Zelda’s been a sucker for hundreds of years.
Peter isn’t completely harmless—he is fanged, after all—but he’s harmless enough and soon becomes the only person in Zelda’s new life who knows the truth about what she is. If she can help him decipher the cryptic notes in his journal, the only clues to his lost memories, she might as well try before sending him on his way.
But when an alarming message from Peter's past coincides with a clear sign that Zelda can't keep running from her own, they embark on a cross-country road trip for answers—only to find what they're looking for in each other.

MY THOUGHTS: This is the third and final book in this series and I can honestly say I love it as much as the previous two. Although I also have to admit Reggie is still my favorite character so book two will always be a fave.

Zelda Watson is co-owner of a yoga studio in California.  You might think her biggest problem is trying to understand the upcoming "yoga with a goat" event her partners are promoting.  However, that is not the case.  Zelda is a 400 plus year old witch who used to love stirring up trouble. Ten years ago, hoping to escape her past, she staged her own death and is now hiding her powers.  But this practice has also complicated her life.  And speaking of complicated, she now has a vampire with amnesia her old friend Reggie has sent her way hoping she can assist him in some way.

Zelda immediately feels an attraction to Peter, but it takes some time before she is convinced to help him.  When she realizes helping him can also serve to help her with her with magic troubles, the two embark on a road trip to Chicago to help Peter uncover his memories.  Neither knows what awaits when that happens but as the miles go by, it becomes increasingly evident that whatever it is, it won't be good.

This series is just so much fun.  I honestly thought the series was only a duology because there were only two vampire main characters, so I was thrilled when Levine made Zelda the witch the focus of book three. I really enjoy a good road trip book, and this one was extra fun because it involved supernatural entities. If you are looking for a fun way to spend a few hours, definitely give this series a go!

FROM GOODREADS: When a librarian discovers she’s descended from a long line of powerful witches, she’ll need all of her bookish knowledge to harness her family’s magic, in this enchanting cozy fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Jenn McKinlay.

Zoe Ziakas enjoys a quiet life, working as a librarian in her quaint New England town. When a mysterious black book with an unbreakable latch is delivered to the library, Zoe has a strange feeling the tome is somehow calling to her. She decides to consult the Museum of Literature, home to volumes of indecipherable secrets, some possessing magic that must be guarded. The collection is known as the of Books of Dubious Origin.

Here, Zoe discovers that she is the last descendant of a family of witches and this little black book is their grimoire. Zoe knows she must decode the family’s spell book and solve the mystery of what happened to her mother and her grandmother. However, the book's potential power draws all things magical to it, and Zoe finds herself under the constant watch of a pesky raven, while being chased by undead Vikings, ghost pirates, and assorted ghouls.

With assistance from the eccentric staff of the Books of Dubious Origin—including their annoyingly smart and handsome containment specialist, Jasper Griffin—Zoe must confront her past and the legacy of her family. But as their adventure unfolds, she’ll have to decide if she’s ready to embrace her destiny.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  First of all we have a library, books and witches.  If that isn't enough, I ADORE this author.  I've read her entire Library Lover's cozy mystery series and even a few of her romance titles.  Can't wait to see what she does with cozy fantasy.

WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK???

FROM GOODREADS:
Lily—a bored, beautiful twentysomething—wakes up on a remote desert compound alongside nineteen other contestants on a popular reality TV show. To win, she must outlast her housemates while competing in challenges for luxury rewards, such as champagne and lipstick, and communal necessities to outfit their new home, like food, appliances, and a front door.
The cameras are catching all her angles, good and bad, but Lily has no desire to leave: Why would she, when the world outside is falling apart? As the competition intensifies, intimacy between the players deepens, and it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between desire and desperation. When the producers raise the stakes, forcing contestants into upsetting, even dangerous situations, the line between playing the game and surviving it begins to blur. If Lily makes it to the end, she'll receive prizes beyond her wildest dreams—but what will she have to do to win?
Addictive and prescient, The Compound is an explosive debut from a major new voice in fiction and will linger in your mind long after the game ends.

MY THOUGHTS: I've seen people talking a lot about this on Booktube and a few other places, so when I saw it on the "New Release" shelf at my local library, I figured I would take a chance.  While I didn't exactly dislike it, it seemed to take forever for me to read such a short book, and it really just reminded me why I don't watch a lot of reality TV.

Lily and 19 other contestants (10 females, 9 males) are participating in a big-brother type game being broadcast across a world filled with desperation and despair.  Apparently, there are wars going on and Earth has become an apocalyptic type of environment.  More about that later. They are competing in individual and community tasks to earn things which will make the home they are staying in more livable and enjoyable, and to earn personal items which will enhance their living experience and possibly earn them influencer status when they leave. In this show, you not only can get voted out of the house, but if you end up sleeping alone at night, when you wake up, you must leave.  This element alone added more vanity to the book than I ever wanted.

One by one people start to form little cliques, and then one by one, they start turning on each other.  The girls are vying for the boys' attention, and the boys are trying to show how "manly" they all are.  As you would guess, there are some real jerks who eventually start showing their true colors and some who are taking the game VERY seriously.

I thought I might have difficulty keeping track of all the characters, but they whittled down pretty quickly, and it wasn't too hard - a lot of them were basically the same person in a different body. Although we learn quite a bit about a select few, Lily is probably the MC and, in my opinion, didn't add much to the story except being a tool to tell the plot through.  And honestly, my biggest gripe was probably that I wanted to know more about the terrible world that had evolved.  What were the wars over?  How bad was it really outside the compound?  How many people were dying and why was the compound such a fun thing for people to watch on TV while war raged on and people died?

I can see people who really enjoy competition reality shows really loving this book.  I found it well-written and will definitely pick up another book by this author.  I just don't think this is the best subject matter for me and it was sold to me as more of a horror novel when in fact, it is everything but.
