MY THOUGHTS:  I pretty much added this short story collection to my wishlist the first time I saw it based on the cover.  I mean, come on, there are tentacles so it was a must.  And then I started hearing some pretty good things about it so I asked that my library order a copy and was thrilled when they did.  Now I usually find short story collections hard to review so I made a few notes as I read this and want to mention each story briefly.  Let's hope this works

      THE TOWN THAT WASN'T ANYMORE - 5/5 Old WV mining town haunted by those the mine claimed.  (Snow, Faith, Fox)

      WE ARE WHERE THE NIGHTMARES GO - 5/5 Little girl takes a doorway beneath her bed and then tries to return (Feisty, Clowns, Lost)

     AS THEY CONTINUE TO FALL - 2/5 Man fights fallen angels who tormented him as a child (Dark, City, Feathers)

      HELL CREEK - 5/5 Dinosaur love story.  Triceratops needs a friend (Death, Blood, Zombies)

Overall I felt this book was pretty solid.  My favorite story was Hell Creek closely followed by The Town That Wasn't Anymore.  It was nice to see a spooky WV tale.  I ended up DNF'ing The Soul Thief's Son because it was related to a series Cargill has written which I hadn't read yet and I had trouble getting into it.  Perhaps I'll revisit it someday as I definitely want to read more from this author.  "We Are Where the Nightmares Go" is a nice collection of all things spooky and weird.  I definitely think it's worth a read for any horror lover and I'd love to see this book get more attention.

WHY I CAN'T WAIT:  The Christmas holidays are usually the one time of year I reserve for any cutesy or romantic books but even so, I still like to find some non-traditional Christmas reads.  This one sounds fun and humorous and it's definitely going on the December TBR.

So this week we are looking at books on my Fall TBR.  I love making TBR lists because I love looking at all the pretty covers and basically, I'm a list sort of gal.  HOWEVER, I don't usually strictly follow the lists so some of these may get read and some won't.  Oh well, best intentions and all that!  On to the books!

Well Now That Was Interesting....

The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay.

MY THOUGHTS: "The Cabin at the End of the World" is my first read by this author and while I enjoyed it, I guess my expectations were a tad bit higher than what I received.  Wen and her fathers are vacationing in New Hampshire when 4 individuals show up saying that only she and her family can save the world from destruction.  The task is on a strict timetable and lets just say these 4 have a unique way of trying to convince the family to accept what they must do.

"The Cabin at the End of the World" takes place in just a few days and although there's quite a bit of action, it's not exactly action-packed.  Instead Tremblay relies on tension building an atmosphere.  It does help that Wen and her fathers are likable characters, but what we learn about them is primarily done through flashbacks.

I will also caution that this is not a book for people who are turned off by ambiguous endings.  The ending of this book is definitely not wrapped up in a nice, neat package.  Also, I was also sometimes bogged down by the paragraphs that lasted for 2 entire pages.  

In the end, I am glad I picked up this book.  I have been curious since I first learned about it and needed to see for myself what it was all about.  However, I'm not really sure this is a horror novel - it's more a novel about horrific people and situations - and that's okay.  I own "A Head Full of Ghosts" and feel like it's a book I'll like a lot more but if you like doomsday and dystopian tales, "The Cabin at the End of the World" might just work for you.

So kind of a small haul this week which is fine.  I had two holds come in at the library - isn't that how it always happens? I love that person with their head on the ground on the cover of "#Murdertrending" and I've heard some mixed reviews of "Toil & Trouble" but I still want to check it out.

And then I have two review books. I couldn't resist "The House of Falling Embers" especially when I saw it was about a house with a witch in the woods and "Little Darlings" sounds like a good thriller, but it doesn't come out until April.

Weekly Reads (09/14/18)

Another week in the books.  I tell you I don't know where time is going.  Everything has been great at The Farm and the pups and I really want to take a moment to send good thoughts to everyone in the path of Hurricane Florence.  Stay safe guys!

So it seems we've been watching quite a bit of recorded TV as some of our faves are either in full swing or starting.  We started watching "The Purge" on USA because Mr. Barb loves those movies and I have to admit that after 2 episodes, I'm intrigued.  Also, "Mr. Mercedes" continues to be a weekly draw.  We also recorded the first episode of "American Horror: Apocalypse" but haven't watched it yet.  The trailer dropped for "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" for Netflix and I can't wait to watch it over the Halloween holiday.

Booker T and Cass are fine and Booker T gets his stitches out this weekend.  He never bothered them ONCE and for that I'm grateful.  I still don't think he knows he has them.  Oh well, fine by me.

I have been getting some reading done and it has picked up since football started.  I love reading and watching.  Plus it rained all last weekend so it was a good excuse to stay inside.  I was going to do a TBR but really am just in the mood to grab things this month so since it's already the 14th, I figure I'll just go with it.  These are the books I do plan on starting next though.  Consider it a mini-TBR.
