It's sure been a while since I've had a decent discussion here but lately I've been wondering a few things so I thought I'd throw it out there.
Should my blog be more defined?
"Now what do you mean?" you might ask. Basically some of my favorite bloggers are ones who focus on particular genres/categories. Perhaps it's YA, speculative fiction, horror, indie reads or contemporary. And when I visit them, I know exactly what to expect. However, I realize that when you visit Booker T's Farm, you are going to get whatever mood strikes me.
Now yes, I love horror, mysteries and thrillers. And from the beginning, this blog has always been about incorporating my four-legged children in as many ways possible. And you can always count on a Prince post once or twice a year because yes, I'm a tad obsessed. Deep down I consider myself an eclectic reader. Much like people, I don't like to stereotype or categorize books. If I think it sounds good, and it's something I'm in the mood for, I'll grab it. And hey, maybe I'll even get it read.
I have tried to stick with some regular features which does provide some consistency. You'll almost always find Top Ten Tuesday posts and Stacking the Shelves/Sunday posts as well as Can't Wait Wednedays. In addtion, Cass is now a regular CWW contributor as I'm always finding new pet-centered books to brag about. Plus Stormi and I do several buddy reads each month with individual books and series. We already have next year's series picked out and are even adding a new feature - it's still under wraps though.
So what do you think? Do you find my blog confusing? I'm just curious because it's something I've thought about lately. Of course, that doesn't mean I'm changing a darn thing. As I like to say, my blog, my rules. BUT, you never know, any comments and wisdom might steer me in a different direction - but don't hold your breath.
Thanks again for all my regular followers - you don't know how much you are appreciated!
I think your blog is wonderful as it is, Barb! I think you bring a lot of yourself into it, which is what makes it so special. I wouldn't change a thing, and I'm glad you know it's your blog your rules because you should always read and write about what you enjoy!

Yea, ultimately I blog because I enjoy it and not to make anyone else happy. That being said, I've made some great blogging friends through it and it's fun to share something with people I know appreciate it.
DeleteThere's nothing confusing about your blog to me Barb. I love your horror, meme and dog related posts best but I look at pretty much every review except if a romance heavy one is featured. I expect to see Prince posts sometimes, talk about what you are doing, reading, watching, tags etc. I greatly enjoy visiting a blog that is varied like yours. That's the charm of it...it's you and your life on a page and I like that. It feels personal, homey, friendly, welcoming to the follower!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of a one genre blog especially if it's a genre I don't read as it makes it harder to leave comments that aren't negative sounding! My blog features a lot of horror and apocalypse books as they are my favourites but there will always be UF, SF, non fiction, Tudors, some fantasy and thrillers popping up dependent on what I'm reading! There will always be Indie books too!
I love the Farm and I wouldn't say you need to change anything!
Thanks Chuckles. You know you're one of the first blogs I ever found and rarely a day goes by I don't pop by!
DeleteNo, I don't think you should change your content and style. It works because you enjoy it and that comes across in the content. I enjoy visiting blogs that focus on something specific, just like you do, but your blog is perfect as it is and I always think 'if it's not broke, don't fix it'. Keep doing just what you're doing imo unless you feel the need for a particular change.
ReplyDeleteLynn :D
Thanks Lynn. I am doing a new feature next year but it's just going to build on what I'm already doing.
DeleteI think your blog is so great exactly how it is, Barb! Like you said, it's your blog, so it's whatever you want it to be! Although blogs that focus on one thing are great, I like when blogs are a little eclectic. It can be a nice change of pace.
ReplyDeleteI'm an eclectic reader so I guess it makes sense that my blog is the same way.
DeleteYou shouldn't change anything about your blog, Barb. I think your blog first caught my eye because of your love of dogs, and I do love the variety of books you post about. Also, ultimately you need to enjoy what you read and write about, no matter what genre😁
ReplyDeleteThanks Tammy!
DeleteDon't change a thing, Barb! I love seeing the variety in your reading. I think it is great when some bloggers are able to focus on a single genre but I think that it is equally great when bloggers showcase a variety of genres. I could never read just one genre because it would start to bore me so I am always looking for books to expand my reading. Of course, my blog is all over the place so what do I know.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of people with similar reading styles, you always come to mind. Seems we both read a lot of different genres and things, yet we end up reading a lot of the same things too!
DeleteI wouldn't change a thing, Barb. I always enjoy your posts, whether dog related, horror or whatever you feel like sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Laura. I appreciate that.
Deletei love your blog. i think about the same thing.

I think it's normal to have doubts about our blogs at times. Must be the perfectionist in all of us.
DeleteI love your blog! I think it's fun that you post about more than just one kind of book or genre. Probably because that's how I read, too. :D
ReplyDeleteYes, you and I have similar reading habits. And it seems we're ALWAYS adding to each other's TBRs.
DeleteI love your blog exactly as it is but I understand your feelings. My blog has become very horror-centric because that's mostly what I enjoy and I realize romance is on the other end of the spectrum and I always feel a little odd posting a romance review on my blog but I figure it's my blog and I'll do what I want to! I love visiting your blog no matter what you choose to post.
ReplyDeleteYea, I don't read a lot of romance but I do like it from time to time. Yet when I review one, I always think - this is really going to throw people off.
DeleteI struggle with this too. I just can't help but post a variety of things because I'm interesting in a wide variety of things! Sometimes I think I just need to be better at mixing it up... As I have been posting a lot of horror lately, I've actually lost followers. That all being said, I love your blog as is!! Variety is nice! :)
ReplyDeleteOh no. I can't believe people left you because of your horror posts. You always have a variety and I kind of expect more horror right now because come on, it IS October!
DeleteTo echo everyone else here, your blog is just wonderful the way it is. I know if I didn't start visting your blog I would never have realised the goodness of the dog genre out there, or learned there's so much more to horror. I like that you read whatever strikes you -- it means I learn about a new genre or title whenever I come here!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love visiting your blog as well. I'm always finding new books and I'm STILL really curious who is buried beneath my high school? I'm thinking perhaps the band director that had an affair with the majorette. I think her parents wanted to kill him for sure!
DeleteHonestly, I think most people are genre grazers; I know I am. Blogs that feature more than one genre are better for me because I don't have all that much time to blog hop and I need to get a big overview in the 12-15 I regularly visit. I don't think I even follow any genre specific blogs, now that I'm thinking about it. Just do what makes you happy. 👍✨
ReplyDeleteGenre Grazers - I love it! Best description ever.
