Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight highly anticipated books. It is based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme which used to be hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.
FROM GOODREADS: Miscast in the media for nearly 130 years, the victims of Jack the Ripper finally get their full stories told in this eye-opening and chilling reminder that life for middle-class women in Victorian London could be full of social pitfalls and peril.
The "canonical five" women murdered by Jack the Ripper have always been dismissed as society's waste, their stories passed down to us wrapped in a package of Victorian assumptions and prejudice. But social historian Hallie Rubenhold sets the record straight in The Five. In reality, only two of the victims were prostitutes, and Rubenhold has uncovered entirely new research about them all--in some cases, material no one has ever seen before.
The Five tells for the first time the true stories of these fascinating women. It delves into the Victorian experience of poverty, homelessness, and alcoholism, but also motherhood, childbirth, sexuality, child-rearing, work, and marriage, all against the fascinating, dark, and quickly changing backdrop of nineteenth-century London. From rural Sweden to the wedding of Queen Victoria, from the London of Charles Dickens to the factories of the Industrial Revolution and the high-class brothels of the West End, these women were not just victims but witnesses to the vagaries and vicissitudes of the Victorian age.
WHY I CAN'T WAIT: Three words - JACK THE RIPPER!
WHAT BOOK CAN'T YOU WAIT FOR THIS WEEK???
I have been fascinated about Jack the Ripper since I went on a Jack the Ripper tour in London when I was on a high school trip. This books sounds awesome and of course extra creepy!
ReplyDeleteOh that tour must have been awesome! I would love to go stay in the Borden house which is now a Bed & Breakfast.
DeleteThis sounds so interesting! It seems like such a random thing to want to write a book about, but I'm really curious😊
ReplyDeleteYea, I guess kind of random but at least it's not been done before. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, unless it's creepy... or has dogs (There's always room for dogs).
DeleteOh, wow, this sounds so interesting!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Angela!
DeleteThis one is definitely on my TBR. Sounds fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteHope we both love it.
DeleteIt sounds really good and the cover is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteYes, the cover immediately caught my attention.
DeleteThat cover! I would read it for that alone. I am glad the subject matter sounds so awesome too. I love that the focus is on the victims. Adding this to my wish list.
ReplyDeleteYes it does seem to be a different spin on it. The author may have been on to something ;)
DeleteWhat an interesting book! I always find that the focus on the victims to be very interesting. I hope you enjoy this one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing,

Ooh, this sounds like it will be a fascinating read! Great pick! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashley.
Deleteoh I want to read it just because of the cover Barb! So atmospheric!
ReplyDeleteNot sure why I shy away from Jack the Ripper stories! But this one sounds so deliciously feminist! YES!
I definitely think you should give this one a whirl!
DeleteAfter reading your review? This one! :D
ReplyDeleteGlad to help!
DeleteOh, this is one I hadn't heard about. And I love reading about 'Saucy Jack'. Doesn't that sound terrible? Ha!
ReplyDeleteNope, I'm the same way.
DeleteThis is really an interesting premise for a book.
ReplyDeleteI thought so too.
DeleteI'm not usually one for nonfiction but this I would totally read just for the topic!
ReplyDelete~Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum
My non-fiction is limited to creepy or dogs. And sometimes memoirs. I'm not big on self-help, political or historical at all.
DeleteI am really intrigued by this! I don't think that I know much at all about Jack the Ripper's victims. Thanks for sharing this one.
ReplyDeleteThey do tend to get overlooked.
DeleteWow, Barb! I definitely want to read this one!

Glad you enjoyed this week's pick!
DeleteGimme! Gimme! LOL I'm always looking for more Ripper stories. This has a unique angle. And that cover sure is something.
ReplyDeleteI'm always on the lookout to - him and Lizzie Borden.
DeleteIt sounds like a long overdue shedding of light on people who were tragically misunderstood or not understood well at all. Awesome pick!
ReplyDeleteThanks Greg!
DeleteOh wow, this sounds like a long overdue story that really needs to be told. I think I'll be picking up a copy of this as well.
ReplyDeleteHope you love it.
DeleteThis sounds interesting, putting a real persona to each of the dead women instead of just the tag of prostitute.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think back then many were of the mind of they were just prostitutes. Well, they were people too and who knows why they resorted to that. Should be an interesting tale.
DeleteThis one sounds fascinating! Anything that will rescue these poor women from being the butchered objects of Jack the Rippers' crimes has to be celebrated... I hope you love this one, Barb - thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYour pick sounds really interesting. I like the spin putting the attention on the victims and really fleshing them out. Hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting twist on the Jack the Ripper story. I might be tempted to read it if not for the fact that these are murder victims that are being featured....how very sad....
ReplyDeleteWell, I sure hope you enjoy it, Barb!! Thanks for commenting on my CWW post!! HUGS TO YOU AND THE BOYS, AND "WOOF, WOOF" TO THEM!! AN EXTRA HUG FOR BOOKER, AS HE WAS UNDER THE WEATHER RECENTLY. <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)
Oh my gosh, yes, this sounds amazing. Thanks for introducing me!
ReplyDeleteI want this. Jack the Ripper. Oh yes, Victorian times. Oh Yes. This sounds awesome. Give it to me. NOW.
