TTT - 10 Things I Loved and Hated About Game of Thrones Season 8

The top 10 weekly meme used to be hosted by The Broke and the Bookish they  handed over the reins to ThatArtsyReaderGirl who can be found HERE.  Each week she will focus on lists which cover various topics related to books and reading.

This week's topic is "Books I Refuse to Let Anyone Touch."  Well, that really doesn't work for me because I rarely loan books and I don't have any truly expensive editions.  The ones I cherish are my dog books, King books, Pooh books and Prince books and you've all seen them before.  So since I have some things I just HAVE to say about the last season of Game of Thrones, I'm focusing on that.

Now I'm not one of the people lobbying for a redo of the entire season.  They have their right but it's just a show and HBO spent a fortune on it so that's not going to happen.  While not thrilled with it, I've seen worse season enders but I do wish things had gone another way.  That being said, on with the list!

Warning - Spoilers ahead!

LOVED:  I loved that Sansa struck out on her own and became Queen of the North and that Arya set out to explore like she always dreamed.  Such strong women.  That's saying a lot considering I still haven't quite forgiven Sansa for getting a direwolf killed in Season 1 while trying to impress Geoffrey.

HATED:  That neither Sansa or Arya had much to say when sitting on the council at the end.  Such strong female characters delegated to the background.

LOVED: That at the end, Ghost FINALLY got the much deserved attention from his master, Jon Snow.

HATED: That he was slighted in Episode 4.  He deserved SOMETHING when Jon left.  You can CGI the heck out of dragons and fire but it's too much work to CGI a hug, pat on the head or ANYTHING!  Also, I'm not convinced HBO didn't throw that tidbit in toward the end because people were so upset.

LOVED: That Jon was the one to kill Dany.  Of course, I would have loved it had Arya killed Dany, or Sansa killed Dany, heck even Varys.  Better yet - Ghost should have killed Dany!

HATED: That Dany's death had to happen at all.  Yes, I get it that she became the Mad Queen and I understand that looking back, the path was always there. Heck, at the end even I wanted her dead.  But Dany had such a heart and wanted to free the oppressed.  She was such a brave woman with such fight who overcame so much.   AND she could command dragons (not to mention that she was briefly married to Aquaman).  I really wish it had taken a different turn that what it did.

LOVED: Drogon melting the Iron Throne.  I think that wise dragon realized that throne was the root of all evil and what really killed his mommy.  Probably why he let Jon live.  So basically, Drogon was the smartest one in the last episode.

HATED: Now Drogon is basically an orphan.  He lost his siblings AND his mother. I hope he finds peace and other dragons somewhere to play with.

HATED:  Bran being named King of the Six Kingdoms (Since the North bowed out).  I felt indifferent to Bran the entire show.  If he could in fact see the future, maybe he could have acted earlier and kept some of this stuff from happening.  So maybe he did want the Iron Throne.

LOVED: That Bran name Tyrion his Hand.  Come on, we all know that Tyrion will really be running things. And I feel pretty good about that.

So do you agree or disagree with any of these (And no, I'm not looking for a fight:)  And what were your final thoughts.  Maybe George RR Martin will finally finish the series and give people and ending they are happy about.  Then again, maybe he'll never finish them at all.

  1. Do you think there will ever be a spinoff series to Game of Thrones?

    1. I know HBO already has a prequel in the works which happens many many years before GoT. I'm sure with the success of the series, there will be more to come.

  2. Since I think Tyrion is probably the smartest character on the show, I'm glad he's the Hand, although Bran as King - what? Did he know all along that would happen?

    1. My thoughts exactly. If he knew and really didn't want it, why didn't he do something to change the outcome? I don't trust him but then it's over so I guess it doesn't matter :)

  3. Love this post, Barb😁 I was also wondering what happened to Drogon. I love how open ended some of these endings were so you can make up your own story. And Ghost! Such a nice ending for him, (except for Jon's behavior before that, of course)

    1. Yes I can still imagine what happens to some of them. I heard some theory that Dany is still alive and Drogon took her where he did because someone was there to resurrect her. If she is, I hope she redeems herself and at least Drogon has his mommy back.

  4. I totally loved that Drogon burned the Iron Throne. I was yelling and cheering like a mad women. Best scene of the series!

    1. I know. It was such an awesome scene. I stand by my belief that he was the smartest in the episode!

  5. I haven't actually finished watching the final series yet, but I've seen enough to know where the series ended. I'm happy with Arya and Sansa's endings and I am very confused about Bran being King, though I guess it will make more sense when I actually see the episode? Dany dying was always going to happen, and I guess Jon killing her has some kind of poetry, though I wish all the women of Game of Thrones hadn't been done so dirty by the writers.

    1. I would love to say yes, it makes more sense. But it really didn't for me. Hope it does for you. I agree with the writers doing the women so dirty. I know back then it was a man's world but it's fiction so can't we change that up some?

  6. I have only watched the first episode so far, but I've seen spoilers and this season was NUTS!

    1. Yes it was. I'm not on the "let's do it over" bandwagon because come on, plenty of other series have had poor endings. However, I do wish some things were different.

  7. I never got into Game of Thrones, but I know a lot about it because of all the discourse on Twitter. It was such an ambitious project and it seems they did a much better job in the earlier seasons.

    1. Yes if you are on Twitter, you almost don't need to watch it :)

  8. I honestly think Sansa would have been a better choice than Bran. But since they went the way they did, at least she stayed independent and kept the North out of the Seven. I hope Martin does that also.

I'm less sure about Jon killing Dany, but... it worked, mostly? I do think though it would have worked better if she had gone Mad Queen BEFORE they faced the Others (white walkers) and she had then partially redeemed herself by saving humanity? That's how I think the books are going...

"briefly married to Aquaman" lol. That made me smile. :)

And yes Drogon burning the throne!

    1. I like your take on what should have happened with Dany much better. I guess they were going for impact with Jon killing Dany. However, I could never quite get past the whole, he's your nephew thing. I think Jon put some distance between them when they found out she was his aunt but Dany didn't. And yes, I will never forget Dany's husband. That's where my love of Jason Momoa started.

  9. I've only read the books, but I've heard a lot about this season on Twitter, LOL. Don't know if GRRM will finish the books in his lifetime (one can hope) but I think that they will be finished someday... even if ghostwriters have to finish it for him after he dies.

    1. I have seen him speaking more about the books now so I hope he does. I refuse to start the series until he does although I am collecting them.

  10. Can't say I was all that pleased with the way things ended, but as this is probably the only ending we'll ever get for these characters (doubt he'll ever finish the books), I'll take it! Honestly if the last two seasons didn't feel so rushed I would probably be much happier with how things played out.

    1. He better or else he better go into hiding. I've heard lots of people say they are counting on the books for a better ending. I can't help but think they are wishful thinking.

  11. The only thing I wanted to know was that the dragon or dragons survived. But I liked that Drogon melted the damned throne -- the whole Bran thing though? did not make sense given the attention the other characters got.

    1. Yes, I've seen so many trashing Bran. I had actually seen a spoiler that he was going to get the throne and I thought there was no way. Guess they showed me!

  12. I was so happy to see Jon at the end with Ghost and Tormund where he belonged and I'm glad he killed Dany. I hate that Varys wasn't there to see the ending he dreamed of serving, serving someone who didn't want it and won't be corrupted by it. I might need to do a few more GoT posts!

    1. Yes I think that Jon probably got the best ending of all.

  13. I agree with all of your points! I loved Sansa and Arya. I did not love Bran. He’s weird, and I don’t understand his powers.

    1. Yes he is weird and I agree about understanding his powers. I don't think they were explained very well. Let's face it, he should have died several seasons ago.

  14. Season 8 definitely had its ups and downs. I enjoyed most of it, but many of the Hates you mentioned would be on my list too. In addition to all of the Loves you mentioned, I also loved the scene where Jaime knighted Brienne. That scene and the scene with Ghost in the final episode both made me cry, lol.

  15. Endings eh! I love your list and agree with you. I know lots of people are disappointed with the ending and I can see why but at the end of the day I also don't know how things could have ended up differently. I felt sad about Dany - more so because her character seemed to change so dramatically, that being said, like you mention, I think that streak was always in her. That Scene with Brienne completing Jamie's chapter in that huge book (of knights?) - gave me LotR vibes with Frodo finishing Bilbo's tale. Overall it's been a very good series, I might have felt some disappointment at the end but it's been a great ride and it feels a little like things have been left open - after all there's a dragon still out there!!

    1. Yes, Drogon lives on and honestly, wanting them to redo the whole season? I'm a tad disappointed but let's get real, there was A LOT to tie up. I was initially sad about Jon but you know, he didn't want to rule and is probably perfectly happy with how things played out.
