Classics I Read in School/College That I Actually Enjoyed

The top 10 weekly meme used to be hosted by The Broke and the Bookish they  handed over the reins to ThatArtsyReaderGirl who can be found HERE.  Each week she will focus on lists which cover various topics related to books and reading.

This week's topic is related to a back-to-school theme so I decided to share with you a few classics I read in school that I really enjoyed.  I'm not a big reader of classics, but there are a couple out there I love.  I will also share one I  couldn't stand which I'm sure will come as no big surprise to many.

Little Women -  I don't actually think this was required reading for anything but I do love this book.  So much that I've read it 3 times - not bad for someone who doesn't re-read a lot.

Wuthering Heights - I'm not sure I would make it through this book now if I tried, but it did spark my interest in a lot of things Gothic.

The Scarlet Letter - Another classic I read in high school which I really enjoyed.

Beowulf - I LOVED Beowulf in college.  Does that make me weird???

To Kill a Mockingbird - I also really enjoyed this one even though I have NO desire to read the sequel.  Did it really even need one???

And now, for the classic that I couldn't stand......

Alice in Wonderland - I didn't read this in school but actually picked it up a few years ago.  I really liked the Wonderland world but wanted to smack Alice hard - the urge is STILL there.

So there you have it.  Can't wait to see everyone else's lists this week.

  1. There are some days where I wish I read more classics and others I want to just prioritize what I want. I didn't read any of these in school, but read on my own and enjoyed Little Women, Wuthering Heights, To Kill a Mockingbird and Alice in Wonderland.

  2. To kill a mockingbord is one classic I do genuinely think is timeless! Did you read the sequel?

  3. I could not get into Alice in Wonderland at all! I hated Wuthering Heights with a passion I must admit! Little Women was ok but I couldn't read it again. I did read To Kill A Mockingbird and it was well written but I never really 'enjoy' books with that subject matter!

  4. I read Wuthering Heights on my own in high school and I barely made it through!

  5. I confess I was one of those kids who loved reading classics growing up--and still do, although I don't read as many of them. To Kill a Mockingbird was a favorite as was Beowulf and The Scarlet Letter. I didn't care for Wuthering Heights, surprisingly enough. Jane Eyre, though. Now that's one of my all-time favorites. Great list, Barb!

  6. I'm right there with you when it comes to Alice. In general that story is just too silly for me, although I've read some really good retellings.

  8. I also read To Kill A Mockingbird in school, and I surprised myself with how much I actually ended up enjoying it! Wuthering Heights is one I read on my own, but still absolutely loved, even if it was a pretty long book :)

  9. I love To Kill a Mockingbird, but I agree that releasing the sequel (or whatever that was) was a terrible idea. I decided not to bother with it either.

  10. I'm terrible at reading classics but there are a few I enjoy! I liked Beowulf too in school. Alice in Wonderland for some reason always creeped me out- I have no idea why- but I'm sure it wouldn't bother me now?!?!

  12. I also ADORED Wuthering Heights in high school and now have quite a collection of editions. I'm terrified to read it again though because I'm worried I won't love it anymore. Great list!

    Here are my Top Ten!

  13. I haven't read any of these. I live in Missouri so that might be why we were always expected to read Mark Twain. I am not really a classics reader but feel like I should read To Kill a Mockingbird at some point.

  16. It's good there were so many books you enjoyed reading in school. Can't say I liked any of the required reading in any of my high school/college courses, lol!

  19. I do recall reading Little Women, but like you, I don't think it was required for school! I know Scarlet Letter was, and I actually didn't totally hate that! I did have to read Beowulf but I umm do not remember it, oops! One day I do want to read To Kill a Mockingbird too! Great list!

  20. I only read Beowulf and To Kill an Mockingbird from your list in school. I read both Little Women and Alice in Wonderland later in life. Still haven't read Wuthering Heights. I think I'm like the only one. lol
